At a time when weddings are often synonymous with extravagance, an US couple has flipped the script, turning their nuptials into a ticketed event and raising over Rs 1.1 crore for charity in the process.
A report by People magazine has revealed the story of 34-year-old Marley Jacques and 37-year-old Steve J Larson, two entrepreneurs who hosted what might be one of the most unconventional weddings in recent memory. Held on August 1 in Eagle, Idaho, their wedding was not just a personal milestone, but also a fundraising event, complete with paid entry and VIP perks.
The couple, who have experience organising business events, found the traditional cost of American weddings excessive. Even a cake-cutting service, they discovered, could cost up to $650 (Rs 54,000). 'We did not want to make our wedding a burden. We wanted people to just bear the cost of their food instead of gifts and be a part of this experience," Jacques explained.
So, instead of following convention, they created what they described as a 'self-funded wedding model". Guests were invited to buy tickets to attend. Two tiers were offered – a basic ticket priced at $57 (roughly Rs 4,750) which included access to the ceremony and reception, and a VIP ticket costing $997 for two people (about Rs 83,000), which came with added benefits like a rehearsal dinner, a 'biohacking brunch", a post-wedding recovery session, and even brand mentions in the wedding programme.
Surprisingly, 100 basic tickets and 30 VIP tickets were sold. While close friends and family were invited free of charge, tickets were bought by people from the couple's professional and social media networks.
The event itself was anything but ordinary. Guests were treated to luxury ice cream, cookies, and cake. Music came courtesy of live DJs and artists. VIP attendees had access to wellness activities including breathwork, red light therapy, and brain optimisation.
Although the concept was met with some criticism online with some calling it 'petty" or a 'money-making trick", Jacques and Larson were clear about their intentions. They said the goal was never profit but to make the event financially neutral and socially impactful.
In fact, they donated the surplus funds, $96,200 by the night of the wedding, to Village Impact, a nonprofit that supports education and infrastructure in Kenya. Additional money was raised during the post-wedding brunch, bringing the total to $132,550 (roughly Rs 1.16 crore).
The couple is now set to travel to Kenya in July 2026 to help construct the school their wedding proceeds will fund.

How Malegaon Ke Sholay's crew of locals changed the way the iconic Dharmendra-Amitabh-starrer is seen

The climax of Sholay, the tense standoff between Gabbar Singh's gang and Jai and Veeru on a precarious wooden bridge, remains one of the most emotionally charged scenes in Indian cinema. Suspended high on a rickety bridge, the moment distilled the grit and heart of the film masterfully captured by cinematographer Dwarka Divecha. Nearly 25 years after Sholay was released, 28-year-old Nasir Shaikh from Malegaon paid homage to that very scene in a way only Malegaon could. Using 12 bamboo sticks and a handcart, Nasir recreated a miniature version of the bridge for his low-budget spoof film Malegaon Ke Sholay, a parody that would go on to spark a cottage industry of spoof films in the town. While the rest of the two-hour film leaned into slapstick humour, the bridge scene remained untouched: it was the only moment in the film treated with solemnity. Nasir, now 53, says the choice to keep the scene serious was deliberate. 'That captured the heart of Sholay. Tampering with it would have felt like erasing a sacred moment. It was my favourite scene in the original and it became my favourite in our version too. I think it was our tribute to Sholay, with whatever little we had,' says Nasir. Also Read | Dancing Queen: Why the magic of Helen in 'Mehbooba, mehbooba' hasn't faded with the years A series of two bomb blasts one in 2006 and another in 2008 cast a long shadow over Malegaon, fueling perceptions of Muslim alienation and leading to the arrest of several young men unfairly branding the town as a cradle of radicalism. It was, however, men like Nasir who changed that. Malegaon ki Sholay was his fifth and most expensive film made in 2000 on a budget of Rs 50000. Written by Akram Khan and Hamid Subhani, it was shot with local actors in two months. 'There were so many doubts. Where do we get so many horses? How could we recreate Gabbar's rocky lair or the train sequence,' says Nasir. The film made over Rs two lakh in ticket sales. He later sold the rights to a music company for Rs 20,000. Unfortunately, because of copyright restrictions, Malegaon Ke Sholay cannot be uploaded or screened widely today. But it's a film that warms his heart. 'I'm proud that people would watch Sholay in a local theatre one day and still return to watch Malegaon Ke Sholay the next,' says Nasir. 'Sholay is a perfect film. It speaks to every Indian. Even our humble version connected because everyone knew the original so well,' says Nasir.

Vivek Agnihotri Says ‘Star-Kid Obsession' Is Hurting Bollywood: ‘A Common Man Can't Make Entry'

Last Updated: Vivek Agnihotri blames Bollywood's decline on star-kid obsession, lack of new talent, and undervaluing writers. Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has delivered yet another blunt critique of the Hindi film industry, this time targeting its lack of inclusivity, over-reliance on star kids, and disregard for writers. Speaking with Siddharth Kannan, the director said Bollywood's closed-door culture is stifling new talent and weakening its creative core. 'It is because there has been no new talent entering the film industry. A common man cannot make an entry," Vivek said. Using the example of Shah Rukh Khan, he argued that if the superstar were to debut today without English fluency or an elite background, he might never get through the doors of a studio. He criticised the current selection process that prioritises Instagram followers over acting ability, questioning how aspiring actors from smaller cities like Kanpur, Jhansi, or Visakhapatnam could ever break in. 'So what happens is, they take kids from film families. Also, star kids want to become influencers, and influencers want to become stars," he added. 'Writers Ki Koi Aukaat Nahi Hai' Vivek also took aim at the sidelining of writers in Bollywood, which he believes is damaging the quality of Hindi cinema. 'Writers ki koi aukaat nahi hai. Stars aur studios ne unki aukaat cheen li hai. They've made a nexus. Studios want numbers, and for that, they want stars… The writer gets ₹10, while the star gets ₹10,000," he said. He pointed out that the overexposure of star kids on social media — from their outfits to their workouts — strips away the audience's ability to imagine them as different characters. This, combined with poor writing, results in films lacking depth and authenticity. Vivek's Upcoming Film: The Bengal Files Despite his criticism of the industry, Vivek Agnihotri continues to make politically charged films that aim to provoke discussion. His next project, The Bengal Files, follows the controversial success of The Kashmir Files. The upcoming film will explore West Bengal's history of political violence and ideological conflict, with a star-studded cast featuring Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, and Darshan Kumar.
