State renews pledge to end child labour
Patna: On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, symbolic cheques for Rs 25,000 were distributed among children rescued from child labour as financial support from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The programme, organised by the department of labour resources, was aimed at raising awareness and reaffirm the state's commitment to ending child exploitation. Deepak Anand, secretary of the department, said around 30 children had been rescued so far in the 2025-26 financial year. In the previous years, 1,319 children were rescued in 2023-24 and 1,148 in 2024-25. He added that the department recovers Rs 20,000 from offending employers and deposits the amount into the Child Labour Rehabilitation-cum-Welfare Fund. The state govt contributes an additional Rs 5,000 per rescued child to strengthen the rehabilitation process. Each child also receives Rs 25,000 from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to secure their future. "World Day Against Child Labour reminds us that there should be no place for child labour in a civilised society. It is a social crime and curbing it is every citizen's moral duty. He said children are a nation's most valuable asset and their well-being reflects the social and economic development of society. "The roots of child labour lie in poverty, illiteracy and social inequality, which perpetuate a generational cycle of exploitation and deprivation," he said. He reminded the gathering that, under Indian law, employing children under 14 or adolescents aged 14-18 in hazardous workplaces can result in a fine between Rs 20,000 and Rs 50,000, imprisonment from six months to two years, or both. Repeat offenders face rigorous imprisonment of up to three years. Labour enforcement officers and superintendents were honoured during the programme for their work. 1 Bangladeshi national, 1 Indian tout arrested in Tripura
The Government Railway Police (GRP) Monday informed that one Bangladeshi national and an Indian tout were arrested during two separate raids at the Agartala railway station in Tripura. In the first incident, a Bangladeshi national, identified as Pranajit Ray, 35, was arrested during a joint operation conducted by the Agartala GRP, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and other sister agencies on Wednesday. During the preliminary interrogation, the investigators found that Ray, a resident of Sylhet district in Bangladesh, illegally entered Tripura and had planned to go to Kolkata from the Agartala railway station. 'We seized some documents and some Indian currency. We are examining these things,' said an officer. In a separate incident, an Indian human trafficker, a resident of Chanipur in West Tripura district, was also arrested during a joint operation conducted by security agencies. A GRP officer said the trafficker, identified as Debasish Malakar alias Debu, used to provide food and shelter to Bangladeshi nationals who entered Tripura illegally. 'He was absconding for a long time. We arrested him yesterday (Wednesday) and produced before court today (Friday),' he said. Several Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas have been arrested for entering Tripura illegally in recent months. As per a report of the Tripura Police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons and two Nigerians were arrested in the state between January 1, 2024, and February 28 this year. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, recently informed that 2,815 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for illegally crossing the Indo-Bangla border into Tripura from 2022 to October 31, 2024, out of which 1,746 have been pushed back to their country and 1,069 are housed in jail custody, temporary detention centres, shelter homes or are out on bail. Tripura shares 856 km of international border with Bangladesh, much of which is covered with barbed wire fence except a few patches that are still unfenced due to local disputes.

US rapper Silento, best known for his hit song 'Watch Me Whip', has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of his 34-year-old cousin, Frederick Rooks III, in 2021. According to the New York Post, the 27-year-old rapper, whose real name is Ricky Lamar Hawk, pleaded guilty but mentally ill Wednesday to four charges, including voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a felony crime, and concealing the death of his cousin. A murder charge was dropped as part of the plea agreement. Voluntary manslaughter came with a 20-year prison sentence, while the firearm possession and concealment of death counts entail five years each. Hawk has been in jail since his February 2021 arrest, per the outlet. Silento is an American rapper, singer and songwriter. He rose to fame in 2015 with his debut song 'Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)'. The song sparked a global craze and racked up millions of views on YouTube. The track even peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2021, police found the rapper shot in the leg and face outside a home in a suburban area near Decatur. Cops said that they found 10 bullet casings near Rook's body, and the security video from a nearby home showed a white BMW SUV speeding away shortly after the gunshots. A family member of Mr Rooks reportedly told officials that Silento had picked up Rooks in a white BMW SUV, and GPS data and other cameras put the vehicle at the site of the shooting. The rapper then confessed to the crime 10 days later after he was arrested. The bullet casings found at the scene matched the gun Silento had when he was arrested, officials said. The prior year, Silento was charged while living in Southern California for allegedly threatening two people with a hatchet. He had been on bail after a recent arrest. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Hawk "walked into an unlocked stranger's home" and attempted to strike the two people in the home with a hatchet before one of them managed to disarm him." In 2020, the rapper was also arrested after police said they clocked him driving 143 miles per hour (230 kilometres per hour) on Interstate 85 in DeKalb County.
