European Union fines Apple 500 million euros, Meta 200 million in separate cases
The European Union (EU) fined big tech firms, Apple and Meta, for 500 million euros and 200 million euros respectively on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The decision came as a result of the enforcement of the EU's digital competition rules- the
Digital Market Act
(DMA).
Apple has been fined for preventing application makers from directing users to more affordable options outside the App Store.
Meanwhile, Meta was fined €200 million for forcing Facebook and Instagram users to either consent to personalized ads or pay to avoid them—limiting users' freedom of choice. The penalties are announced under the DMA of the European Union.
Henna Virkkunen, the Commission's executive vice-president for tech sovereignty said, "the DMA aims to function so that citizens have full control over when and how their data is used online, and businesses can freely communicate with their own customers.'
Virkkunen added, "the decisions adopted today find that both Apple and Meta have taken away this free choice from their users and are required to change their behavior."
The rulings were initially anticipated in March, but officials reportedly delayed them due to rising tensions in the trans-Atlantic trade relationship, as U.S. President Donald Trump continued to criticize EU regulations targeting American tech firms, the report said.

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday commended the seven multi-party delegations for effectively representing India's stance in global capitals following Operation Sindoor , a decisive strike against terrorist hubs in Pakistan and PoK. "Met members of various delegations who represented India in different countries and elaborated on India's commitment to peace and the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism. We're all proud of the manner in which they put forward India's voice," PM said on X. Newark airport videos: Delhi formally takes up matter with US Embassy
The Ministry of External Affairs has formally raised the matter with the US Embassy in New Delhi in the wake of social media videos purportedly showing an Indian national being handcuffed and pinned to the ground at the Newark airport. The Indian Consulate in New York has also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details of the incident, as per sources. Posted on X by Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain, the videos and photographs showed an unidentified young man being restrained by officers from the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD), the agency responsible for law enforcement across major transport hubs in New York and New Jersey Sunday night. Jain had tagged the Indian Embassy in Washington DC and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in his series of posts. During a call from The Indian Express to Port Authority Police Department at Newark International Airport, an officer said that 'the PAPD doesn't get involved in deportations'. 'The Ministry has formally raised the matter with the US Embassy in New Delhi. Our Embassy in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in New York have also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details,' sources in the Ministry said. 'We have so far have not received any details about the incident or the circumstances under which he was restrained, the flight he had to board or boarded and his final destination,' sources said, adding that the ministry will continue to follow up on the matter. There is still no information if the person has left Newark or has arrived in India, as per those aware of the matter.
