Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez face protests from locals over wedding in Venice
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are set to to tie the knot in the 'wedding of the century' in Venice, Italy, in just two days' time - but to say the romantic city's locals are less than thrilled about the three-day celebration is an understatement.
Protest banners, posters and graffiti have appeared in recent days, most emblazoned with the message 'No space for Bezos', and activists are planning a series of disruptions to challenge the island-wide celebrations.
The Amazon founder, 61, and his fiancée, 55, are expected to throw one of the most lavish sets of nuptials of the year, costing an estimated $15 million to $20 million, with a star-studded guest list featuring some of the world's most famous faces.
According to Italian media reports, hundreds of stars will visit the city for the events, which will take place from June 23rd to 25th, with nearly every luxury hotel now fully booked.
But demonstrators in the Lagoon City are against the spectacle of wealth that is about to take place and say the wedding is an example of over-tourism, a problem Venice already struggles with.
Last week, a group of activists unfurled a huge banner over one of the city's most famous landmarks, the Rialto bridge, with its central message 'No Space for Bezos', a nod to the billionaire's space exploration venture, Blue Origin.
They also hung a huge banner with Jeff's surname crossed out in red on the bell tower of San Giorgio Basilica.
Protestor Federica Toninelli told the BBC that Venice is 'being treated like a showcase, a stage', adding that Jeff and Lauren's wedding is 'the symbol of the exploitation of the city by outsiders'.
In a social media post urging other locals to join the protests, the activists also accused the city's Mayor Luigi Brugnaro of treating residents as 'a nuisance' because 'for him the only valid use of Venice is as a backdrop for events that make the rich richer'.
But Brugnaro has hit back, telling reporters he is 'ashamed' of the protests and adding: 'What other city would organise a committee against the wedding of such an important person?
'I hope [Jeff] doesn't have second thoughts.'
Another protestor, Marta Sottoriva, told The Independent that the city's willingness to host the extravagant event has given the impression that 'a city can be sold to the highest bidder with the most money'.
On Sunday June 22nd, more messages popped up around the city bearing the protest message, even as businesses prepare for the huge influx of tourists.
One poster features a black-and-white image of Jeff with red tape over his eyes and an upside Amazon logo placed over his mouth like a frown.
The activists are also planning to cause a stir during the festivities and hope to drum up attention for their cause by blocking roads and the city's iconic waterways with boats and paddleboards, as well as jumping into the canals.
Among the sea of high-profile guests expected to attend the wedding, close Hollywood A-lister friends of the couple such as Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Orlando Bloom, Eva Longoria, Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, and Miranda Kerr may make an appearance.
TMZ reports suggest members of the Trump family may also be in attendance, including Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.
It is not known if US President Donald Trump and Melania Trump will be there, but seeing as Jeff and Lauren were given front-row seats at the president's inauguration, his attendance is a possibility.
A source in Italy revealed to MailOnline that the couple will officially tie the knot on June 27, and will say 'I do' on the island of San Giorgio, which is home to the famous Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore, a 16th century Benedictine church.
Bezos' $500 million superyacht, Koru, will be docked on the island's harbour. The island, which is owned by the Cini Foundation, will not be open to the public.
Mass tourism in Venice has been a top issue among residents for some years now. In 2023, officials said they would introduce an entry fee for tourists coming into the city to curb overcrowding and limited the size of tourists to 25 in a bid to control the flow of people.
But the measures have done little to deter the majority of tourists, who still flock to Venice in huge numbers.
Earlier this year, a video shared on social media showed thousands of visitors congesting the narrow Venetian streets near the Grand Canal as they tried to make their way along the water to catch a glimpse of the iconic Carnival parade.
Locals have been grappling with over tourism and the impact it has had on their living conditions, and have taken to the streets in recent years to demonstrate against the number of visitors arriving to the Floating City.
There are approximately 250,000 people living in the region although only approximately 60,000 live in the Renaissance city itself.
Jeff and Lauren's lavish wedding is far from the only large-scale celebration involving celebrities to take place in Venice.
In 2014, George and Amal Clooney tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony, which brought hundreds of people to the city hoping to get a glimpse of the glamorous couple and their famous friends and family.

Man United defender Diogo Dalot shows off his dance moves as he ties the knot with his stunning partner Claudia Lopes at a lavish ceremony in 18th century Portuguese palace
Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot and his bride Claudia Lopes danced the night away after a lavish wedding in southern Portugal. In a popular period for footballer nuptials, the Red Devils star tied the knot with his partner at the stunning Palace of Queluz in the Portuguese Riviera on Saturday night. Though none of his club or international colleagues were spotted a series of Instagram stories uploaded to the pair's social media accounts, the occasion was nevertheless marked by jubilant guests who shared in the loving spirit of the night. In one of the clips taken later on in the night, Dalot could be seen taking the stage with Portuguese musicians Richie Campbell and Plutonio. While in another, he and Lopes took to the dance floor with the defender showing his eye-catching moves. Dalot, who joined the Old Trafford club in 2018, and Lopes have been together since 2020. Lopes even joined him in Italy when he spent a year on loan with AC Milan during the 2020-21 season. The couple announced the birth of their first child, a baby girl called Clara late last year. The Portuguese defender showed off his moves as he took to the dance floor later on in the night In addition to the festivities later on in the night, the two also shared a heartwarming moment while delivering their vowels. The beaming smiles could not be swept from the happy couple's faces as they lapped up the love from all their guests in attendance. The special event will no doubt have been a welcome distraction to the United defender after a miserable season for his club. Dalot has been a regular starter under his compatriot Ruben Amorim, who joined the club in November and presided over the Red Devils' worst-ever Premier League campaign. Amorim came under huge pressure after United Europa League final defeat by Tottenham, with some calling for him to be dismissed after only six months in the job. But Dalot backed the boss who has shown faith in him and insisted he is the right man to take United forward. 'I'm 100 per cent sure that he's the right man for us because I see it every day, the standards that he has, what he demands from us, the view that he has for the club, for the players, for the coaching staff,' he said. 'A lot of changes are happening at the same time, but ultimately it's going to be what we do on the pitch. We have to take responsibility from that. 'Nobody apart from us is going to the pitch and try to get results. So this season it's been obviously a very way off how this club should be and the way this club deserves. 'We have to take responsibility on that and take this time that we're going to be away.' Amorim will remain in charge this summer and lead a recruitment drive that he will hope will better equip him to compete next term. Dalot, who has made at least 50 appearances in each of the last two seasons, is expected to continue to feature heavily for the Red Devils next term, with additions in the attacking areas seen as prioritise this window.

Uffizi director blasts selfie-taking tourists after 17th-century painting damaged
The director of Italy's Uffizi Galleries has sharply criticised social media-obsessed tourists after a visitor posing for a photograph tripped and gashed a 17th-century oil painting. The young Italian man asked his girlfriend to take a photo of him posing in front of the painting of a prince of the Medici family in the museum in Florence, Tuscany. He reportedly wanted to create an amusing image by mimicking the posture of Grand Prince Ferdinando de' Medici, the aristocrat in the painting. But as he stepped towards the artwork, he tripped over a foot-high barrier, put his hand out to steady himself and tore a gash in the canvas of the portrait. The episode, which happened on Saturday, was caught on a security camera. The man was identified and reported to police. He faces criminal prosecution and may have to pay for the cost of the painting to be repaired. The director of the Uffizi said it was the latest example of tourists using their visits to gather material for their social media feeds. 'A tourist who wanted to create some sort of meme in front of the painting, striking the same pose as the Medici prince, ripped the canvas of the artwork,' said Simone Verde. 'The problem of visitors coming to museums to create memes or take selfies for social media is now rampant. We put in place very precise rules to try to impede behaviour that is not compatible with respect for our cultural heritage.' Tourists are routinely caught damaging Italy's cultural heritage, from scratching their initials into the walls of the Colosseum in Rome to posing beside delicate statues and wading into Baroque fountains during the hot summer months. It is the second time this month that tourists in Italy have damaged a piece of art. A week ago, a middle-aged man was caught on CCTV footage sitting on and inadvertently squashing an ornate chair made out of thousands of Swarovski crystals in a museum in Verona. The footage showed the man joking around with his wife and sitting on the 'Van Gogh' chair, which promptly buckled. The couple made a hurried exit from the gallery. Museum curators appealed to visitors to 'respect art' after the incident. 'Sometimes we lose our brains to take a picture, and we don't think about the consequences,' said Vanessa Carlon, the museum director. 'Of course it was an accident, but these two people left without speaking to us – that isn't an accident. This is a nightmare for any museum. Art must be respected and loved, because it is very fragile.'

Heather Graham, 55, wows in another busty ensemble after revealing the secret to her youthful looks
Heather Graham was a sight to behold at the Filming Italy festival in Santa Margherita di Pule, Italy on Saturday. The Boogie Nights star, 55, wore a figure-hugging white gown with a plunging neckline that showed off her cleavage. Her long blonde pair was parted slightly off center in long, loose waves. The Hangover actress' makeup featured smoky eyes and sun-kissed cheeks. Heather's skin glowed with youthful exuberance and she recently shared her tips for looking young in her mid-fifties. 'I think what matters most is how you feel inside. Decide that you're hot and enjoy your life,' Heather - who last stunned in a blue co-ord - told Retreat. 'What other people think of you is none of your business. If you feel good about yourself, no one can take that away from you. 'Pursue the things that fill you with joy, and surround yourself with loving people,' Heather said. Graham went on to reveal that she doesn't drink or do drugs and she feels that plays a big part in how she looks at 55. Graham continued, 'I get a lot of sleep. Eating healthy makes me feel good. I like cooking for myself and other people. And I love it when people cook for me. 'Basically, I like eating! Also, I do affirmations. I think they are very powerful. 'I work on strengthening my inner loving parent muscle, so I can be supportive and loving to myself. One of my affirmations is: "This is the best time of my life."' And Heather doesn't just talk the talk, she walks the walk. 'I feel like as I get older, I just care less about things that don't matter,' she told People in April. Heather's skin glowed with youthful exuberance and she recently shared her tips for looking young in her mid-fifties. Seen here June 21, 2025 'Everyone gets upset sometimes, but I think that I'm happier. I've done enough hard work on myself that I feel like I'm a happier person now.' Graham also explained how she gets and keeps her calm, cool, and zen attitude. 'I just enjoy the simple things in life — like sleeping, eating, my friends, things like that. I love meditating.' Her happy place is the ocean and she combines that and yoga to keep her slender frame in shape. 'I like going on yoga retreats because, to be honest, I love just being by the ocean,' she said. 'So, anytime I'm at the ocean, I just feel happier.' And when she's stressed out, she heads outside to absorb nature. 'I like to go out in nature, go to the beach, look at the ocean, go on a hike, go into the mountains, look at the trees," the Chosen Family told the outlet. Over the years, she's shared a few tricks to her age-defying looks, including her 'obsession' with yoga, a sugar-free diet and up to 12 hours of sleep a night. 'I'm obsessed with yoga,' she also told Refinery29 previously. 'For fun, I would go on a yoga retreat and do four hours of yoga a day. Then I do Pilates.' 'What other people think of you is none of your business. If you feel good about yourself, no one can take that away from you,' she said. Seen here June 21, 2025 During that interview, she also insisted that her restrictive diet just makes her 'feel a lot better.' 'I do eat sugar sometimes, but as a broad rule, I try to just eat no sugar basically,' she explained.
