SABC bids farewell to 'Muvhango'
After 28 years on air, SABC2 and Word of Mouth Productions have announced the conclusion of the soapie Muvhango.
The brainchild of Duma ka Ndlovu, Muvhango made its debut on SABC2 on April 7 1997, bringing to life much-loved characters such as Edward, Catherine, Doobsie, Doris, Chief Azwindini, Thandaza, James, Mulalo, KK and the Royal family, who all became household names.
The final broadcast of Muvhango will take place on August 8 at 9pm. The longtime soapie will apparently be replaced by Pimville Queens, which will air from August 11 at 9pm, though the SABC has not confirmed this.
The soapie was introduced at a pivotal time when South Africa was transitioning from apartheid to becoming a democratic society, and most vernacular dramas at the time were in the majority dialects. Tshivenda was seen as a minority language, and the show was a vehicle to showcase the culture. Over its nearly three-decade run, it has introduced a range of memorable storylines that have impacted viewers.
Muvhango creator and executive producer Duma ka Ndlovu said: ' Muvhango gave an opportunity to an ignored language that has become one of the most celebrated languages in South Africa now. It has been a privilege and an honour to create moments on television, where marginalised languages were at the centre of it all.'
Acting group executive for video entertainment Lala Tuku added: 'For almost 30 years, Muvhango has been a pillar of SABC2's programming and a beloved part of South African television history. More than just a drama, Muvhango has been the champion of language, culture, identity and national pride — inspiring, entertaining, educating and uniting audiences across South Africa.
'As the television landscape continues to evolve, SABC2 looks forward to ushering in a new era of storytelling, one that builds on this incredible legacy by continuing to reflect the rich tapestry of South African life.'

Inaugural Ziyakhala Mo Sun City Festival celebrates traditional music, culture and fashion
The SABC and Sun City are excited about the inaugural Ziyakhala Mo Sun City Festival, an eclectic celebration of traditional music, culture and fashion. The groundbreaking collaboration sees Sun City partner with the SABC's nine African language stations. 'Ziyakhala' is a slang term that roughly translates to 'it's happening', or 'the party's on'. The festival is taking place on June 28, featuring traditional maskandi music artists Mthandeni Sk, Sjava, Qadasi and Maqhinga. The event promotes authentic local music from artists Ringo Madlingozi, King Monada, Cassper Nyovest, Dr Nothembi Mkhwebane, Makhadzi, Lwah Ndlunkulu, Ntate Stunna, Gen Muzka and five-time Grammy award-winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The selection of artists will allow South Africans from all cultures to experience the nation's diverse musical offerings. Nombuso Buthelezi, Sun City's head of events, said: 'We are excited that this truly unique partnership will allow us to touch all corners of the country and reach lovers of traditional SA music who will experience a one-of-a-kind cultural celebration at Sun City Resort'. Thinasiphelele Sixaso, SABC general manager for public service radio, said: 'The partnership will allow a seamless and authentic amalgamation of leading voices in the entertainment space to speak directly to their audience and share their love for South African music and culture with them. In 2010, Talitha Cumi expanded to include a second home dedicated to newborns and toddlers up to two years old. This facility offers specialised, high-level care to babies often abandoned at birth. Over the years, many children and youth have been placed in loving foster or adoptive families through the home's efforts. The future of Talitha Cumi lies in its ambitious Village Project. This long-term vision aims to provide residential care for orphaned and abandoned children up to the age of 21. So far, the team has built five homes. They have fully furnished one, making it ready for occupancy, and they plan to register two more this year. These homes will offer full-time care, mentorship, and a stable foundation for the next generation. Pastor AT Boschoff, who has led the ministry for 17 years, emphasises the importance of this work. 'Since our registration, over 1,130 children have been successfully placed in homes,' he says. 'We remain committed to providing safety and hope for children removed from neglectful or abusive environments.'
