Downpatrick: Mass held for murdered man and attacked priest
The special Mass at St Colmcille's Church on Tuesday was attended by representatives from local clergy, police and politics as well as members of the public.Speaking at the Mass, Bishop Alan McGuckian said people needed courage, to not be afraid - something that isn't easy.Bishop McGuckian said that even in these terrible circumstances that we are shocked and upset we will hear our God saying "courage, do not be afraid".Fr Maurice Henry offered prayers for Fr Murray's recovery, for the memory of Stephen Brannigan, the support of his family and Marian Park community as well as for the alleged perpetrator
Fr Martin Graham, who was involved in putting the special Mass together, said the "very simple, gentle mass" on Tuesday was to "support the people of the town, to support the Brannigan family"."The Bishop just wants to be with the people of the town just to let them know that he and so many other people are praying and supporting the people of the town," Fr Graham told BBC Radio Ulster's Good Morning Ulster programme."Fr Murray is such a central figure in Downpatrick and in the diocese you know, so many of us have known him for many years. "He was fortunate, he is comfortable in hospital, he is progressing and there is a family grieving, there are two daughters grieving their dad, there's grandchildren grieving their grandad, and it's important for us as well the Brannigan family in all of this," he said."That they have the support of the parish as well and for them to make that statement last night, it was just absolutely heart-breaking."Fr Graham said he expects that St Patrick's Church will reopen for Masses once cleaning has taken place.
'Dearly beloved' husband
In a statement on Monday, the family of Mr Brannigan said he was known among his neighbours and friends as someone who was always willing to help out and "ready to do whatever needed to be done for the good of others".The day before he died, he was tending to friends' graves while visiting the grave of his late wife, Dorenda, "as he did, almost every day".Mr Brannigan is remembered as a "dearly beloved" husband, a "much loved" father of two daughters and a "loving grandfather" of six in his death notice.He "faced many difficult issues in his life", according to his family.The family also thanked "those who have surrounded us with such love and care" since Mr Brannigan's death.
On Monday, Bishop McGuckian, who visited the senior priest in hospital, said Fr Murray will make "a good recovery" and he is grateful for prayers from the public.He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for treatment.Fr Murray has served the diocese for 50 years and was scheduled to retire next weekend.The bishop said "a very special moment was just shattered".
Police are appealing to anyone who was in the St Patrick's Avenue area of Downpatrick between 09:00 and 11:00 BST on Sunday, or the Marian Park area between 00:00 and 12:00 on Sunday, to come forward.

The man accused of murdering his wife in front of their two children presented them with gifts and paraded them on social media moments after allegedly killing her. Prem Kumar, 45, of Dandenong appeared in the Shepparton Magistrates' Court on Wednesday where he was charged with the murder of his wife. Kumar made no application for bail and was remanded in custody until December 10. Daily Mail can reveal Kumar took to social media following the alleged murder, which police allege happened inside the Christie Avenue home of his estranged wife in Cobram about 5am on Tuesday. In a series of disturbing videos, Kumar is seen forcing his young children to engage in a wild rant in which he rambled about India, Africa, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, America Allah and Australia. 'Hi everyone, I am safe,' Kumar told his child to say at the start of his two-minute rant with one of the kids sat on his lap. Raising his fist, he forced the children to say 'I am Sikh warrior', although only the eldest of the children was seen participating. Kumar ended the video by telling viewers they would 'see them in Dandenong' - a suburb in Melbourne's south-east. The video was posted to social media at 8.04am, just a few hours after he is accused of killing his 32-year-old wife. In another video, Kumar is seen leading his children - one wearing a nappy - to a vehicle where he presented them with gifts in the driveway of his wife's home. 'What's my name,' he asked one child. 'Kumar,' came the response. 'Good, good,' the alleged killer responded. The children later appeared in a another clip dressed up in traditional Indian finery, with an Ambulance Victoria towel seen draped over the shoulders of one child in one of three disturbing videos. A woman off camera could be heard asking one child, 'Do you want to come sit in the car?' and Kumar shouted: 'Get away'. Officers had been called to the home following reports a woman had been found dead there and arrested Kumar at the scene. In an ominous rant posted to social media on Monday, Kumar stated he was on his way to collect his children in Cobram. 'Am (leaving) now in a hour are so. To Cobram shepparton Victoria to receive my two little wild lion kings,' he wrote. 'Advik and aadhik a wild Saudi Arabian, wild African, a wild Indian Hindu Sikh true wild brave warriors my two little brave wild lion kings. 'Are you ready for the holy religious war against s***-eating all coward terrorist of all the religions?' On Tuesday, a police spokesperson confirmed the alleged killer was known to the woman, with detectives charging Kumar on Wednesday afternoon. A neighbour of the woman told Daily Mail the alleged victim was the mother of the two children, believed to be aged two and four. The neighbour said she would often see the children playing on the road. 'I had to tell her to get them off the road a few times. I don't think she was looking after them real well.' The neighbour claimed the woman had been living in a unit on the street for at least a year. The two children found inside the home were not physically injured. Another neighbour told Daily Mail the woman's husband had moved back in with her a few months ago. Neighbours claimed they heard screams coming from the unit in the early hours of the morning. 'The kids are really tiny,' one neighbour said. 'They're not that old.' Detectives are seeking CCTV footage from neighbouring properties. Word of the suspected murder sent shockwaves through the country Victorian town, which is popular with campers. 'That is devastating, condolences to the family and friends,' one local posted to a local social media page. Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas told reporters his members faced the grim task of speaking with the two children to obtain their version of events. 'What exactly they've seen, we don't know. Obviously we'll do our best to speak to those children,' he said. 'Their wellbeing is (our) number one (priority) and making sure that they're OK and that they're being looked after and provided support that they need. 'We will endeavour to speak to them, to see what they can say to us.' Inspector Thomas said it was an awful situation. 'One woman killed in a situation like this is too many. It shouldn't happen,' he said. 'People should be safe in their homes. People should be safe in their relationships. 'Police do the very best they can when dealing with family violence incidents. 'We will work extremely hard to hold those responsible to account for what they've (allegedly) done.'

From shaking hands with Princess Anne to the 'arrogant' courtroom testimony that would prove his undoing, a forensic psychologist traces Harold Shipman's final months before conviction on a new Daily Mail podcast. Dr Andrew Johns, a key witness at the Shipman inquiry, tells Psychology of a Serial Killer how Dr Death's behaviour became increasingly erratic after his 1999 arrest for Kathleen Grundy's murder. Shipman, a GP suspected of killing 215-250 patients with lethal doses of diamorphine (medical heroin) between 1975-1998, was finally arrested after an exhumation of Grundy's body revealed lethal levels of the deadly opiate. After her death, it emerged that Grundy had seemingly left everything to Shipman in her will, raising immediate suspicions and sparking a police investigation. Following his arrest, Shipman was held at the infamous Strangeways Prison, where his sinister mind began to fully unravel. Harold Shipman: The Final Months Before Conviction Despite overwhelming evidence, Shipman maintained his innocence during his remand at Strangeways. The serial killer charmed guards and inmates with his medical expertise, presenting himself as a wrongly accused doctor. 'Shipman appeared to adapt to prison life well and told others the accusations against him were false', Dr Andrew Johns recounted. 'He insisted on being called doctor and was considered so well behaved that he was chosen to welcome visiting VIPs to the prison. 'Shipman shook hands with Princess Anne and chatted to her. In letters to friends, he boasted about his Royal connections. 'He arrogantly told one: 'It's a pity Princess Anne looks like a horse.' 'Shipman saw himself as intellectually superior to other prisoners, holding unofficial surgeries and giving medical advice to inmates and officers. 'His wife, Primrose, visited him every day with their children. She was described as seeming buoyant, never doubting him. She told others the whole thing was a big mistake.' During his time at Strangeways, police charged Shipman with the murders of seven more women, meaning the Hyde GP would face a total of 15 murder charges at his trial. Upon hearing this news, Shipman's defence lawyers tried to convince him to take a psychiatric assessment, hoping professionals would find him medically unfit. 'Shipman refused', Dr Johns said. 'He did not want his team to run a mental health defence at trial.' Shipman's denialism would carry over to his murder trial, with the GP pleading not guilty and demanding to give his own testimony. In British law, the accused does not have to give evidence at their own trial. Dr Johns suspects Shipman's 'arrogance' influenced this decision, believing he could charm the jury despite the mountain of evidence against him. 'The evidence was overwhelming', Dr Johns said. 'All of the victims had died from morphine which had not been prescribed for them. All had died unexpectedly, and Shipman had seen every victim on the day of their deaths. 'There was no question of euthanasia or mercy killing – none of the victims had been terminally unwell. 'The court even heard that Shipman had prescribed heroin for patients who were already dead, stockpiling thousands of milligrams of the drug.' On January 31, 2000, Shipman was found guilty of all 15 counts of murder and one count of forgery, receiving 15 life sentences with a recommendation he never be released Nominating himself to give evidence, the prosecution gleefully took the opportunity to grill a 'nervous and pale' Shipman for 7 days. The killer's excuses quickly wore thin as he desperately tried to rationalise the damning evidence against him. 'Shipman claimed that the morphine found at his home was a simple oversight', Dr Johns said. 'He could not explain why there was morphine found in the bodies of the exhumed victims, other than to claim 81-year-old Grundy was a drug abuser. 'The prosecution pointed out to Shipman that not once in any of the cases did he attempt resuscitation or call an ambulance or admit anyone to hospital or permit a postmortem. 'The obvious explanation was that he was guilty.' On January 31, 2000, Shipman was found guilty of all 15 counts of murder and one count of forgery, receiving 15 life sentences with a recommendation he never be released. Renee Baldwin, 57, was tragically killed inside her Arlington, Virginia apartment before 8.30am on Sunday, according to Fox DC. Baldwin's 27-year-old son Logan Chrisinger has been charged with first degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The industry stalwart has been remembered by her devastated colleagues at Newsmax as a 'gypsy spirit.' Former Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren was among those to pay tribute to Baldwin on Tuesday. 'What a sadness… my Newsmax make up artist of 3.5 years, and years at @ABC @ESPN etc and a friend to all her colleagues… was murdered over the weekend,' Van Susteren wrote on X. '[S]he did my make up Friday for the show and of course I never dreamed that would be the last time I would see her.'
