‘No Other Land' Co-Director Hamdan Ballal Freed After Being Attacked, Detained in West Bank

Yahoo25-03-2025

'No Other Land' co-director Hamdan Ballal is now free after being attacked and detained in West Bank, according to his fellow director Yuval Abraham.
'After being handcuffed all night and beaten in a military base, Hamdan Ballal is now free and is about to go home to his family,' Abraham wrote on X early Tuesday morning.
On Monday, witnesses said on social media that a stone-throwing fight broke out between Israeli settlers and Palestinians after an Israeli shepherd was attacked by Palestinians, Hebrew-language daily newspaper Israel Hayom reported. The Palestinian filmmaker was arrested alongside two other Palestinians in connection to the fight.
'After the assault, Hamdan was handcuffed and blindfolded all night in an army base while two soldiers beat him up on the floor, his lawyer Leah Tsemel said after speaking with him just now,' Abraham shared earlier on Tuesday. 'He's still held in the Kiryat Arba police station.'
The latest update comes a day after he first announced Ballal's detainment. 'A group of settlers just lynched Hamdan Ballal, co director of our film no other land. They beat him and he has injuries in his head and stomach, bleeding. Soldiers invaded the ambulance he called, and took him. No sign of him since.'
Abraham later clarified his initial statement, adding, 'Note: Hamdan was assaulted and beaten up, not murdered. My use of 'lynched' was a mistranslation from Hebrew (English isn't my first language). He's injured and being held at a police station in a settlement. They did not let his lawyer speak to him yet so we don't know more.'
'No Other Land' from Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers Basel Adra, Rachel Szor, Ballal and Abraham won Best Documentary Feature Film at the 2025 Oscars. It chronicles the displacement of Palestinians in Masafer Yatta by Israeli military and settlers after a court ruling declared the area a 'closed military zone.'
The movie was also recently in the news after a Miami Beach mayor, who is Jewish, tried to get O Cinema screenings of the doc pulled and the theater in question evicted. He has since dropped those plans.

Israeli forces intercept Gaza-bound aid ship carrying Greta Thunberg

Israel intercepted a Gaza-bound aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg and 11 other activists early Monday local time, per posts from the Israeli government and the pro-Palestinian group behind the drive. The big picture: The "Madleen" yacht that "Game of Thrones" actor Liam Cunningham was also aboard was being diverted to Israel and the crew was "expected to return to their home countries," said the Israeli Foreign Ministry on X. Details: The British-flagged ship that was raising awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas war was carrying aid including baby formula, food and medical supplies, per a statement from organizer the Freedom Flotilla Coalition that accused Israeli forces of kidnapping the crew. Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament who was aboard the ship, said on X the "crew of the Freedom Flotilla was arrested by the Israeli army in international waters" around 2am local time. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said on X that everyone aboard the "'selfie yacht'" of "'celebrities'" was unharmed and provided with sandwiches and water. What they're saying: "Israel has no legal authority to detain international volunteers aboard the Madleen," said Huwaida Arraf, human rights attorney and Freedom Flotilla organizer, in a statement. "This seizure blatantly violates international law."

Israel: Video shows tunnels where Mohammed Sinwar's body found

June 8 (UPI) -- The Israeli military on Sunday released video it said showed the underground rooms where they found the body of Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar who is believed to have died in tunnels under a Gaza hospital last month. The announcement comes more than three weeks after the Israel Defense Forces launched an airstrike on a bunker near Gaza European Hospital in Khan Yunis, killing more than two dozen people. The IDF said Sinwar was among the dead and initially announced his body had been found in the days after the May 13 strike. The IDF said it confirmed the identity of the body using DNA analysis as well as Sinwar's identification cards found in the tunnels. Hamas has yet to confirm Sinwar's death. In a video posted on X, the IDF showed an underground tunnel and multiple rooms connected to it. In one room, a body can be seen lying on the ground near items such as firearms and clothing. Another video features IDF spokesman Effie Defrin talking about the items they found as he stands next to a pile of cash. Israel officials have long accused the Islamist militant group of using Gaza civilians as "human shields" by operating out of locations in or near civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and schools. "More proof that Hamas leaders weren't just hiding underground, they were running their terror network from beneath a hospital," the IDF post on X said. BBC News reported that hospital officials in Gaza have denied that Hamas uses their facilities. Mohammed Sinwar was considered the de facto leader of Hamas after his older brother, Yahya Sinwar, the former leader, died in Rafah in October 2024. The elder Sinwar was considered a mastermind in Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel that left more than 1,200 people dead and some 250 people abducted. The ensuing war has left nearly 55,000 people dead in Gaza, according to the region's health ministry.

Israel says it found body of Hamas chief Mohammed al-Sinwar in tunnel

The Israeli military on Sunday said it had located the remains of Hamas military leader Mohammed al-Sinwar in an underground tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip. Al-Sinwar, the brother of former Hamas leader Yehya al-Sinwar who was also killed by Israel, was killed along with the commander of the Rafah Brigade, Mohammed Sabaneh, in an attack on May 13, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a post on its Telegram channel. The two had been hiding in an underground command and control centre belonging to the Palestinian Islamist Hamas group, it said. The Islamist group has not confirmed Mohammed al-Sinwar's death. The Israeli military said their remains, along with various personal items, were found beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis. Israel has repeatedly said that Hamas uses civilian facilities like hospitals and schools, as cover for its operations - which Hamas denies. "Additional bodies of terrorists were located during the operation, their identities are currently under examination," the statement added. The IDF showed the tunnel to several journalists on Sunday, including a dpa photojournalist and also posted a video of soldiers dragging a corpse wrapped in white out of the tunnel on its Telegram channel. The military said it was very far underground, in the immediate vicinity of the clinic. The dpa photographer described a strong smell of decay in the air, and said the floor was covered in worms. In one room, which had apparently been used as a dormitory, there were many blankets on the floor. He said no technical equipment or similar items were visible.
