But Halland Johannessen made sure to complete the stage before laying up at the finish area as riding doctors rushed to his rescue.
TV 2 expert Mads Kaggestad at the scene said: "It shows how extremely he has pushed himself."
Uno X sports director Stig Kristiansen spoke to TV 2 after the drama erupted.
He said: " I don't know much. He talked to us in the last kilometers and said he was struggling to get air.
"He was struggling a bit with stomach cramps. It's a mountain that takes its toll.
"I haven't had a chance to talk to him and those in the finish area, but the doctor is on his way and he's getting help from the organisation right now."
Talentin Paret-Peintre produced a late sprint to get past Ben Healy and claim a stunning win on stage 16.
After a thrilling battle up the iconic Mont Ventoux climb, Healy looked set to claim his second win of this year's Tour as he emerged from the final bend in the lead.
But Paret-Peintre, 24, fought back to deny the Irishman and become the first French winner this year.
Jonas Vingegaard repeatedly attacked reigning champion Tadej Pogacar on the climb but the pair crossed together, meaning Pogacar maintains his overall lead.

Lando Norris completed an impressive practice double over championship rival Oscar Piastri at the Hungarian Grand Prix. In the first session, Hamilton complained his car didn't 'feel good', and ran off the road at the first corner following a major lock-up. He was then beaten by both Aston Martin drivers in the second running. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso were fourth and fifth respectively – the latter returning to his cockpit after he missed the opening session with a back injury – while George Russell ended the running in seventh. On Thursday, Max Verstappen ended speculation he could leave Red Bull at the end of the year by committing his future there for at least another season. However, he finished a distant 14th in practice, over 1.1 seconds slower than Norris. 'I don't know what is going on,' said Verstappen. 'It is just undriveable.' Verstappen is also facing a stewards' investigation after he threw a towel – seemingly left in the Dutchman's cockpit by accident – out of his car. Verstappen has been called to see the stewards at 6.20pm local time (5.20pm BST).

The footballing journey of Dele Alli has taken another sad twist, with the former England international reportedly contemplating retirement after being left out of Como's pre-season plans ahead of the new Serie A campaign. Dele, 29, joined the ambitious Italian side in January on an 18-month deal with the option of a further year, but his future in the game is now in serious doubt after a dramatic decline in fortunes. McLaren's progress faster than Ferrari in Schumacher era -Stella
BUDAPEST, Aug 1 (Reuters) - McLaren's rate of progress may be faster than Ferrari during their golden era with German Formula One great Michael Schumacher, team boss Andrea Stella said on Friday. The Italian worked at Maranello with seven-times champion Schumacher as an engineer during that period but told reporters at the Hungarian Grand Prix that he had been surprised by McLaren's growth. The Woking-based team won the constructors's title last season and are running away with both championships this year with Australian Oscar Piastri and Britain's Lando Norris fighting for the drivers crown. McLaren have won 10 of 13 races so far and are a mighty 268 points clear of second second-placed Ferrari in the team standings. In 2023 they were fourth overall and in 2022 fifth. "It's always difficult to compare across seasons," said Stella, who joined McLaren from Ferrari in 2015. "In this case, we are comparing across teams, and even myself, I was in a very different role, so my field of view, my perspective was very different. "But if I had to pick a couple of features of the journey that is happening here at McLaren, I would say the rate of progress that we have had in a couple of years is in itself pretty unique. "And possibly the rate of progress itself was even faster than what we experienced at Ferrari in the very competitive times." Schumacher won five titles in a row between 2000-2004, with the last one a particularly dominant season and Ferrari winning 15 of 18 races. Stella said McLaren had set out an ambitious programme when deciding how much effort to put into developing their car this season, with a new engine era coming in 2026 that could shake up the pecking order. "We wanted to try and clear the 'going into race weekends and you never know who's going to win' situation we had last year, and we thought we needed to do a little bit more than the normal development," he said. "We embraced a very aggressive approach to innovation. The MCL39 is a very innovative car." Stella said it had also been upgraded considerably since the start of the season. Piastri and Norris have called the title battle a two-horse race, with the Australian 16 points ahead of his teammate but a massive 81 clear of Red Bull's Max Verstappen in third place, but Stella disagreed. "Definitely not. I only agree with mathematics. So once mathematics tells us that's the case, then I'll change my answer," he said.
