
Manager of a luxury hotel reveals how to get a suite upgrade and what really annoys the staff
The manager of a luxury hotel in Barbados, has lifted the lid on how to get upgraded to a top class villa, and has also revealed what rubs staff up the wrong way.
Christopher Pitt, 56, is guest services manager at the Royal Westmoreland, a luxury resort covering over a square mile of the Caribbean island, where he has worked for 19 years.
He told DailyMail.com there's no such thing as a standard day for him, but his most important task making sure his staff 'are ready to face the guests with a smile and do an outstanding job'.
But while Christopher 'loves his job', his least favorite task is 'dealing with disgruntled guests'.
And he explained his greatest 'bugbear' is 'when you spend an hour or two trying to get a booking for them and calling all your contacts, and then the guest cancels'.
Another cheeky guest behavior, according to Christopher, is when they try to depart their villa after their scheduled check-out time and 'pretend that it's normal around the world'.
But he warned there's one key mistake guests can make in Barbados that's unlikely to impress their hotel staff.
'Barbadians are usually very polite people,' explains Christopher. 'So when a guest enters an area and doesn't say "good morning/good afternoon/good evening", it sometimes comes over as unmannerly.'
On the question of upgrades, Christopher reveals he's had turn down requests in the past. But he said guests who 'complain about a maintenance issue or construction' are those most likely to get better accommodation.
Despite the bugbears, Christopher says he would never want to 'trade' his job for anything else.
He said: 'I love meeting new people and creating special experiences for guests. No two days are the same and I love chatting with people.'

How budget airline baggage confusion triggered EU legal row
Determined to avoid baggage fees for his holiday to Pisa, Benjamin Till trawled several different shops armed with a tape measure in search of the right suitcase. Eventually, he found a case within the dimensions EasyJet allows for a free underseat bag - or so he thought. When Mr Till arrived at London Gatwick Airport in December 2023, he discovered those measurements included wheels, meaning his bag was deemed slightly too protested, but eventually paid £48 to bring the bag on board. He says he was told to remove the wheels for the way back - which he at the gate on his way home, he was told the suitcase was still too large, so he sat on the floor, unpacking his dirty underwear and souvenirs into a bin bag."I don't mind admitting that I actually burst into tears because it was so humiliating," he says. What do customers want? Hand luggage dimensions should be universal, says Jane Hawkes, a consumer expert specialising in travel."I don't really see why it can't be, and why they can't come to a voluntary agreement as to what those requirements should be for your baggage," she tells the BBC."There have to be restrictions, obviously, but a one-size-fits-all kind of approach would make it a lot simpler for passengers," she said policymakers should define what "reasonable" size and weight was "to avoid surprises at the airport and ultimately reduce the number of disputes costing consumers and airlines time and money".Ms Hawkes suggests passengers make sure they measure their bag after it is packed, as it may expand when it is full and go over the limit. She adds that consumers should not just be swayed by the fare price, as "if you've got an airline that encompasses [baggage] without you having to pay extra costs to start with, then that might be more of a better option for you". Mr Till would welcome a one-size-fits-all approach to underseat bags. "It's just really, really unfair and ridiculous and there should be one size that goes across all of the airlines," he also criticises the permitted size of underseat cabin bags, saying "it was such a tiny, tiny size of luggage that you were allowed that it had taken me so long to find something that was so small".Still, he was grateful for the inexpensive air fare, and the place he had to stay in Italy, because "otherwise I wouldn't be able to come to this beautiful country".

STREETS MADE FOR WALKING? ONE of the best things about Nice is just how walkable it is, the piece de resistance being a stroll along the seafront Promenade des Anglais. Uber brings helicopter taxis to the Amalfi Coast
Uber has announced that customers will be able to book helicopters in minutes in Italy this summer to beat crowds. From 26 July to 23 August, travellers on Italy's Amalfi Coast can reserve a private Uber Copter to take them between Sorrento and Capri using the Uber app for €250 (around £184) per head. The dual-pilot helicopter service will operate every Saturday and Sunday with a 9am departure from Sorrento and 5pm return from Capri. The journey includes door-to-door transportation to and from the helipad and is available for groups of up to six passengers. The American transport company, best known for its taxis, is also launching the Uber Boat in Italy with private charters for up to 12 people available between 26 July until 24 August. Travellers will sail from Sorrento Marina on Italian Gozzo 35 boats, with ample opportunity to soak in the coastline's most breathtaking spots on the four-hour trip. Each trip comes with its own personal skipper and complimentary snacks and beverages. This summer is set to be the southern coastline's busiest on record following the launch of international flights at Salerno Airport. The Amalfi Coast, famed for its pastel-coloured fishing villages and excellent food, is one of Italy's most popular tourist spots, attracting around five million tourists a year. Very narrow roads link the most popular towns on the coastline meaning travellers face traffic bottlenecks and competition over seasonal ferries. Uber said it is responding to the rise in demand from international customers for Uber's mobility services, which increased by up to 25 per cent last summer in places like Rome, Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast. It added that more than 400,000 international customers used the Uber app in Italy during the holiday period in 2024.
