France will ban social media for those under 15 within months, says president Macron

India Todaya day ago

France may soon ban access to social media for children under 15 years of age. President Emmanuel Macron announced that the government would move to restrict access for children under the age of 15 in the coming months if the European Union does not take similar action. Macron's announcement came hours after a tragic incident at a middle school in Nogent, eastern France.advertisementA 14-year-old student fatally stabbed a 31-year-old school staff member during a routine bag check for weapons. A police officer was also injured while trying to detain the attacker, who allegedly used the same knife in both assaults."We must ban social media for those under 15 I'm giving us a few months to get the European mobilisation going. Otherwise we'll start doing it in France. We can't wait," Macron said in an interview with the TV channel France 2.
Macron stressed that there is a rising culture of youth violence, which in part is being fuelled by unsupervised access to digital platforms for children. His comments come at a time when several countries are raising concerns about the impact of social media on children and teenagers. While French investigators have not confirmed whether the stabbing was influenced by online content, Macron and other officials have reportedly pointed to social platforms as a contributing factor in the rise of aggression amongst youth.advertisementFollowing his interview, Macron also took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), urging tech companies to step up. 'Platforms have the ability to verify age. Do it,' he posted, echoing calls from child safety experts who argue that age-gating measures are both possible and necessary.Notably, if France does impose a ban on social media usage for children, it would not be the first country to enact such strict regulations. Last year, Australia introduced a ban last year for users under 16, following an intense national debate. The government suggested it would use some form of age-verification technology to enforce the restriction and plans to test more options in the coming months. The country enforced the ban for at least 12 months and imposed fines of up to A$50million ( that is around $32.5million) on tech companies in case they fail to comply with the orders. The Australian Prime Minister said strong legislation is required to protect the younger generation from the 'harms' caused by social media. 'We want our kids to have a childhood and parents to know we have their backs,' he told reporters (via BBC). Australia's ban on social media access to children applies to platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and X. Although the order exempts gaming and messaging apps, since these platforms cannot be accessed without creating an account.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171 near Ahmedabad, which claimed over 200 lives. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: "Saddened by the tragic crash of Air India flight near Ahmedabad today. We extend our condolences to the families of the victims grieving this immense loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy." Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the human cost of the disaster. In his statement on X, he said: "My heartfelt condolences to the families of the precious lives lost in the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. This devastating loss transcends borders and reminds us of our shared humanity. My deepest sympathies to Prime Minister Modi and the people of India." Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also offered his sympathies, highlighting the scale of the tragedy: "Saddened to hear a tragic incident occurred earlier today. Where an Air India flight with approximately 240 passengers crashed shortly after takeoff near Ahmedabad, India. I express my profound condolences to the people of India." The crash, which occurred shortly after the Boeing 787 took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport en route to London, has drawn international reactions and solidarity, with leaders from across the world mourning the loss of lives. A London-bound Air India Dreamliner (AI171) carrying 242 people crashed into the BJ Medical College complex near Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday (June 12), triggering a massive blaze. The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which took off at 1.39 PM, reportedly issued a 'Mayday' call before plummeting just 600-800 feet into the densely populated area adjacent to the airport. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was confirmed dead by BJP leader C R Patil. Amid the devastation, one survivor was identified — Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who was seated on 11A. Of the 242 people onboard, 230 were passengers: 169 Indian, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian. The crew included two pilots and 10 flight attendants. The aircraft was captained by Sumeet Sabharwal (8,200 flying hours) and co-piloted by Clive Kundar (1,100 hours). The aircraft crashed into a hostel building in the medical college campus, setting off intense flames that charred trees, buildings, and parked vehicles. A Gujarat health official said DNA testing will be needed for identification due to severe burns. Though no official toll was released, reports indicate over 200 bodies have been recovered. Air India Chairperson N Chandrasekaran said: 'We are heartbroken. This is an unbearable tragedy. We have activated our emergency response centre and are working to support families.' CEO Campbell Wilson added, 'This is a difficult day for all of us at Air India. We are working with authorities on all emergency response efforts.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, 'The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. My thoughts are with everyone affected.' King Charles III expressed shock: 'Our special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected… across so many nations.' British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the images from Ahmedabad 'devastating,' noting many British nationals were aboard. Rescue teams continue to sift through the wreckage in search of clues and possible survivors. As the nation mourns, the focus now shifts to investigation and support for the families affected by this unprecedented tragedy.

Elon Musk expresses regret after private call with Trump amid feud over spending bill

In a surprising turn of events, Elon Musk privately reached out to U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday night, days after their public spat over a proposed federal spending bill. The call, reported by The New York Times, was followed by Musk posting a message of "regret" on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging that some of his earlier comments about the president had gone too far. "I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far," Musk wrote. The feud began when Musk harshly criticized the Trump-backed spending bill, calling it a "disgusting abomination" and suggesting political consequences for Republican lawmakers who supported it. The exchange quickly escalated, with Musk even drawing controversial connections between Trump and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Initially defiant, Musk resisted calls to apologise, responding to one X user, "What's the apology for exactly?" He said he'd only consider apologizing after a 'full dump of the Epstein files.' However, he later deleted the post linking Trump to Epstein. Before the call, Musk had spoken with Vice President JD Vance and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, seeking advice on how to ease tensions. That same night, he made the conciliatory post on X. Trump, who was attending the opening night of Les Misérables at the John F. Kennedy Center, downplayed the conversation, saying he hadn't 'thought too much' about Musk reaching out. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Trump had seen Musk's statement and appreciated it. Meanwhile, JD Vance stated he had been in touch with both men, emphasizing the importance of Musk's public and private support for the president's agenda.

Trump's hand bruise becomes internet obsession — why are these marks showing up more frequently?

People noticed another big bruise on Donald Trump's right hand again, it's showing up often now. The bruise was first seen in Spring 2024, during Trump's court case with Stormy Daniels in Manhattan, as per reports. In February, the bruise looked worse after a busy schedule of handshakes following his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. In April, it showed up again when Trump held a football at a Commander-in-Chief Trophy ceremony in Washington, D.C., according to the report by Daily Beast. Most recently, the bruise was visible at Fort Bragg military base, during a speech about the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. During that White House speech, cameras caught a brownish patch under his knuckles when he raised his hand. according to a reports Play Video Pause Skip Backward Skip Forward Unmute Current Time 0:00 / Duration 0:00 Loaded : 0% 0:00 Stream Type LIVE Seek to live, currently behind live LIVE Remaining Time - 0:00 1x Playback Rate Chapters Chapters Descriptions descriptions off , selected Captions captions settings , opens captions settings dialog captions off , selected Audio Track default , selected Picture-in-Picture Fullscreen This is a modal window. White House blamed handshakes Dr. Stuart Fischer, a doctor from New York, said in February that handshakes could cause bruising, especially at Trump's age. Dr. Fischer also said it might be Osteoarthritis, which affects joints and bones, and Trump's old age, 78, is a factor too, as per the report by Daily Mail. Live Events Back in February, the White House said excessive handshaking was the reason behind the hand bruise. Karoline Leavitt, Trump's press secretary, told NBC News that the bruises were a result of 'constantly working and shaking hands all day'. Trump himself told Time magazine that the bruises come from 'shaking hands with thousands of people' After the bruise photos went viral again, people online questioned Trump's health, and the White House has not commented yet, as stated by the report by Daily Beast.
