Jannik Sinner gets redemption, beats Carlos Alcaraz for first Wimbledon men's singles title
The No. 1-ranked Sinner earned his fourth Grand Slam title overall, moving him one away from No. 2 Alcaraz's total as the two young rivals separate themselves from the rest of the pack in men's tennis.
Alcaraz won the first set 6-4 but Sinner broke the Spaniard in the opening game of the second set and then held serve the rest of the way. That was despite being interrupted by a fan in the stands popping open a champagne bottle as Sinner was getting ready to serve out the game.
Sinner then broke Alcaraz for a 5-4 lead in the third set.
Sunday's match at Centre Court marked the first time the same two men faced off in the title matches on the clay at Roland-Garros and the grass at the All England Club in the same year since Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal did it in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Alcaraz, a 22-year-old from Spain, defeated Sinner, a 22-year-old from Italy, in five sets during an epic 5-hour and 29-minute French Open men's final in Paris five weeks ago. It was the fifth time he had beaten Sinner in a row.
Alcaraz stepped into the sunlight bathing Centre Court as the owner of a career-best 24-match unbeaten run. He had won 20 matches in a row at the All England Club, including victories against Novak Djokovic in the 2023 and 2024 finals.
The last man to beat Alcaraz at Wimbledon was Sinner, in the fourth round in 2022.

Carlisle bare-knuckle boxer Danny Christie has announced his retirement from the BKFC. The 40-year-old former UK champion says he will no longer fight on the major bare-knuckle platform. Christie announced his decision following his recent defeat in a British welterweight title fight against Connor Tierney. The Currock fighter initially retired last autumn only to reverse his decision to take on Tierney. Now Christie is stepping down from the top bare-knuckle scene again. "I just don't feel like I've got anything left to do in this game. "Never, ever in my wildest dreams or imagination could I ever have envisioned me doing what I've done in the BKFC. "What an honour and a privilege it's been to be one of the names that's helped pioneer this company in the UK and make it what it is today. "Bare-knuckle is where it's at. I love the BKFC. I love the sport, I love the game. Christie defeated Anthony Holmes to win the British light-heavyweight BKFC title in 2023, and has also had title fights in other weight divisions (Image: BKFC) "I've had some brilliant feedback from the BKFC. They've made a position available to me, working with the company in the UK, which is massive, and brilliant. It's what I wanted to do. "I'm an ambassador for the BKFC. But I've decided enough's enough." Christie said he had "retired" after previous fights but added: "There's only so many times I can keep doing this. "There's only a certain amount of training camps that you're willing to put yourself through." Christie became the British light-heavyweight champion in 2023 when, after victories over Terry Brazier and Darren Godfrey, he defeated Anthony Holmes in Leeds to take the belt. After defeat to American fighter Jared Warren, he successfully defended his British title against David Round. Christie then moved to middleweight and defeated Jimmy Millar, earning a world title shot where he was beaten by American star David Mundell. That fight last October prompted Christie to retire but he returned to take on Tierney in Birmingham last month. Home-city favourite Tierney got the better of Christie by technical knockout in the fourth round of a closely-contested and ferocious fight. After nearly three weeks since that fight the Carlisle boxer has now reached his decision to call it a day. "I've just headlined two shows back to back," he added. "I've got no interest in going back and fighting some randomer on the middle of a card somewhere. "No disrespect to the lads who are doing that, but I've come such a long way." Christie said he will "still be in the game," with the Currock man having been working with up-and-coming Carlisle fighter Kieron Sewell, who has just signed a deal to join the BKFC.

No Welsh players in a British and Irish Lions test team for the first time in 129 years
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — An important element in the great tradition of uniting players from Britain and Ireland to form the Lions will be missing Saturday when there's no Welshman in the test squad for the first time in 129 years. It'll be the might of Ireland, England and Scotland against Australia. Back-rower Jac Morgan was the only Welshman left in the touring group in Australia when scrumhalf Tomos Williams injured his hamstring and was ruled out of the series. Morgan's impressive appearances in the leadup to the three-test series against Australia weren't enough to earn him a spot in a back row comprising of Irish No. 8 Jack Conan and blindside flanker Tadhg Beirne and England openside Tom Curry. England's Ollie Chessum and Ben Earl were picked as cover off the bench. In announcing his match-day 23 on Thursday, Lions head coach Andy Farrell said Morgan got 'as close as you could imagine' to selection. He said he was 'gutted' for players like Morgan who were in good form and could have been picked but missed out because of the incredible depth in some areas and for the balance of the squad. 'Shows where we're at as a group,' Farrell said. 'That's the right balance for the first test.' Beirne is a big game player, strong on turnovers and ball-carrying, and complements Conan, Farrell said, while Curry has the kind of 'engine' needed to win a test. Farrell said there'd been 'very vigorous debate" in the composition of the team but ultimately all the selectors settled on the combination.
