Olympian Aoife O'Rourke: ‘Representing Ireland in the boxing with my sister is incredible'

Aoife (28) and her sister Lisa (23) – who is also a boxer and the 2022 World Championship light middleweight gold medallist – recently came back from the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Serbia, both with silver medals.
'Doing it with Lisa was incredible,' Aoife said. 'It was definitely one of the highlights of my career so far, getting to bring home two silver medals to Castlerea and the community in Roscommon.'
'It was an amazing trip overall, with all the tough fights from the very start of the championship. That's to be expected at that level; there's no easy fights.'
Aoife – a four-time European champion and two-time Olympian – said it was great to have her sibling by her side.
'We're getting to see the world together. We're getting to represent our community, our town, county and Ireland on the biggest stages in boxing, and to be doing that with a sister is absolutely incredible,' she said.
'There's not too many people that can say that they've done that. We're there for each other. We're roommates when we're away. We support each other.'
The boxer is proud of her performance in the Olympics, and of her European titles.
'They're all highlights ... getting the opportunity to go to these places, different countries, and experience all that I have.
'I don't think there's a standout moment, but winning that silver medal [in Serbia] was definitely up there – one of my proudest moments. And doing it with Lisa made that trip extra special.
'Getting the opportunity to [be a full-time athlete] is incredible. I'm very, very honoured and grateful to get to do what I do.'
It's not all about boxing for the O'Rourke sisters though. Last month, they secured a world doubles title in Hyrox, the fitness competition.
Aoife said winning a world title in a sport other than boxing 'wasn't a plan at all'.
'We went out there to have fun... and next thing we knew, we were the first double back to the wall balls [the final segment of the contest], and ran up the ramp,' she said.
'And then, a few moments later, we found out that we're the fastest and that we're a champion. So that was really special.'
She said they got the opportunity to compete at the Hyrox World Championships in Chicago last month because of 'their local support at home'.
'It's an expensive trip, and we're just so grateful that we had people at home that sponsored us and looked after us. Only for them, we probably wouldn't have made the trip,' she said.
'It all comes back to your community and the people that you have surrounding you, supporting you on your journey and trying to make your dreams come true.'

World champion Littler survives early scare to book first World Matchplay final

WORLD CHAMPION LUKE Littler survived an early scare to book his first Betfred World Matchplay final after an historic encounter against Josh Rock at Blackpool's Winter Gardens. The 18-year-old recovered from being 5-0 down in less than 10 minutes to close out a 17-4 win, which included a perfect nine-darter which he admits kick-started his comeback. Twenty-nine 180s was the most in World Matchplay history as Littler, who had 15 of those, finished with a 107.5 average – Rock averaged 104.1 – and is one victory away from becoming only the fifth person to win the Triple Crown of World Championship, World Matchplay and Premier League. Advertisement 'It was an incredible game. I wasn't happy at 5-0 down, it was a slow start but I picked myself up,' Littler told Sky Sports. 'I wouldn't say Josh fell off but those first five legs from him were unbelievable. I just said to myself 'you can do it, you have been here before' – and I've done it again. 'As soon as I got into the lead, I just had to break and hold and get that two-leg advantage which I did and hold my own throw.' On his nine-dart finish – in a leg where Rock had thrown successive 180s to set up a nine-darter himself – he added: 'It definitely sparked me into life. I didn't want to give it big because I was playing awful.' His opponent in the final is James Wade, who admitted he 'hated every minute' of his epic 20-18 win over Jonny Clayton to reach his seventh final. The 42-year-old Englishman, who last won this event 18 years ago, had been 7-2 and 16-10 up and needed just one leg for victory only for his opponent to win six in a row and force extra legs. Clayton then missed two doubles to level at 19-19 and Wade staggered over the line. 'I'm done. I think Jonny just let me off at the last minute – but I let him off before that,' he told Sky Sports. 'I'm exhausted after that. I hoped the crowd here and everyone at home enjoyed themselves because I hated every minute of it.'

Twenty-year-old John Browne, from New Ross is described by Mr Browne as 'a seasoned campaigner at this stage'. John has being fishing for Ireland since the age of 12. He will be fishing his ninth major Championship in Spain and has represented Ireland at senior level. He was also a member of the Under 25 feeder team that won a silver medal at last year's World Championship in Hungary. 'There's excitement building across the board and it's great to see the enthusiasm among the team members. We're actively looking for sponsorship and are grateful for the ongoing support from the community,' Mr Browne said. The team will travel to Spain on August 1, with management and parents also making the trip and will set out to practice until the championship takes place on August 8 and August 9.

Shearer's six-word Evan Ferguson remark speaks volumes as he admits his surprise

Alan Shearer couldn't help but think "wow, what a player he looks," as Evan Ferguson dismantled Newcastle United with a hat-trick. The Irishman has impressed with Brighton and Hove Albion since joining from Bohemians in 2021, racking up 17 goals and six assists in 80 outings for the Seagulls. However, due to stiff competition from the likes of Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro in 2024/25, Ferguson was sent out on a half-season loan with West Ham in February for more frequent football. What ensued was an eight-game dry spell, with the 20-year-old unable to find the back of the net for the Hammers before returning to his parent club. However, if the opinion of all-time Premier League leading goalscorer Shearer is anything to go by, Ferguson still holds massive potential. Speaking to Betfair, the Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle legend said: "I was hugely impressed by Evan Ferguson a few seasons ago and think I did an article on that and how I thought his potential was massive. I'm a tad surprised he's left the Premier League but also it may be a reset for him. "He may go over to Italy for a couple of years and then look to come back to England. I'm surprised he's chosen to leave the Premier League, but I guess we're not sure how many offers he had. "I'd have liked to have seen him stay and show the potential he did in the early days at Brighton. When he scored that hat-trick against Newcastle, I just thought 'wow, what a player he looks.' He's certainly one to keep an eye on over the next season or two." The game in which Shearer referred to took place at the American Express Stadium in September 2023, with Ferguson in flying form against an off-the-pace Newcastle side. Ferguson opened the scoring on the 27th minute when Nick Pope spilled a long-range effort from Billy Gilmour into the striker's path. Evan Ferguson impressed Alan Shearer (Image: PA) He bagged his brace with 65 minutes on the clock, hitting a dipping effort past Pope and into the bottom right corner of the net from outside the box, before completing his hat-trick for the afternoon with a left-footed curler from the edge of the area five minutes later. Callum Wilson's stoppage time goal came as all but a consolation for the Magpies, who made the long journey back to Tyneside with a 3-1 loss to show for their efforts. It comes as Ferguson is set to spend the entirety of 2025/26 on loan with Roma, with the Serie A stalwarts agreeing a deal with Brighton on Wednesday. Speaking about the move, Brighton head coach, Fabian Hurzeler, said: "Evan had a challenging period across the past season and a half, and it has been one disrupted by niggling injury issues. He really wants to play regularly and this is an exciting opportunity in a strong league and with the prospect of European football." And it hasn't taken Ferguson long to make a mark at his temporary club either, scoring four goals in a training-ground friendly against Serie D outfit UniPomezia on Thursday as a No. 9. Roma will be eager to improve on last season's fifth-place finish in Serie A when 2025/26 rolls around, with Ferguson also potentially relishing at playing Europa League football with I Giallorossi. However, the Seagulls have worked tirelessly to improve their squad for the fresh campaign, welcoming a number of fresh faces to the AMEX. Centre-half Diego Coppola secured a move to Brighton in June from Hellas Verona for an undisclosed fee, before Do-young Yoon joined the ranks from Daejeon Hana Citizen on a five-year deal at the turn of July. As part of plans from the Brighton camp, however, Yoon will spend his first season with the Seagulls on loan with Excelsior Rotterdam to develop further. Tommy Watson also joined at the turn of the transfer window through a pre-agreed deal with Sunderland AFC, while Maxim De Cuyper made his way to the south coast from Club Brugge, and Charalampos Kostoulas arrived from Olympiacos. It comes as Brighton are set to return to the UK after completing a pre-season tour of Spain. The Seagulls secured a 3-1 win over Stoke City and a 2-0 win over Las Palmas at the Marbella Football Centre and now prepare to take on Southampton at St Mary's and Wolfsburg on home soil ahead of their Premier League opener with Fulham on August 16.
