Now, she's all set to make her Telugu debut with the web series 'Mayasabha', directed by Deva Katta. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Divya spoke about the film's success and about her upcoming ventures. 'I knew Chhaava would do well," she said, and added, "but the response has been truly overwhelming. 2024 and 2025 have been amazing for me professionally. And now, I'm debuting in Telugu too.'

Set in the 1970s and 80s, 'Mayasabha' delves into the intense rivalry between two politicians—Krishnama Naidu and Rami Reddy—played by Aadhi Pinisetty and Chaitanya Rao. Divya takes on the role of Iravati Basu, a strong and commanding presence in a male-dominated political landscape. Opening up about her role, she said, 'I believe this role is absolutely apt to begin my innings in Telugu. What better than to play a woman in politics who holds her own while facing off men?'
About her role
Divya was instantly captivated by the strength and depth of her character, as well as the way director Deva Katta presented the story to her. "It's lovely as an actor when you get to tap into nuances and play with layers in any character. Everything from the way she exchanges looks to the way she stands her own has been fleshed out so well, it was a ball to play her,' says Divya.
Having started her journey in the 1990s with memorable films like 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' and 'Sharmajee Ki Beti', Divya says she's now focused on taking up roles with real depth—characters she can truly immerse herself in.
She's currently working on two films with Manoj Bajpayee, another with Jimmy Shergill, and a biopic with Neeraj Kabi, along with a major web show. Reflecting on her career, she shared that while she's always had the hunger for meaningful roles, it's only now that she's finally getting the chance to explore them more freely. 'It's like I've had the roti, and now I'm craving the dessert,' she says with a smile.
She also points out that throughout her career, she hasn't often been handed author-backed roles. "But I feel things are changing now," she said.
She further said that she has observed a positive shift in the way female characters are being written today. She notes that roles no longer revolve around the old formula of just a hero and a heroine—instead, every actor now gets to play a meaningful character. There's a healthy sense of competition, and the perception of women in the industry has evolved. Unlike earlier times, when actresses were believed to have short careers, there is now growing space for women over 40 to take on strong, well-written roles.
