Just 25 forestry licences issued by DAFM last week
This marks a significant decrease on the 56 licences granted by the department in the previous week.
According to the latest forestry dashboard, published by the department, 14 of the licences issued last week were for private felling and while there were no Coillte felling licences issued.
Up to May 9, DAFM had issued a total of 326 private felling licences and 113 Coillte felling licences for a total of 5,446ha.

The department issued six afforestation licences last week, down from 11 in the previous week.
This brings the total afforestation licences granted this year by DAFM to 189 relating to 1,478ha.
The data shows that 1,079ha has been planted in 2025. This figure reflects afforestation that has been paid at first grant stage this year to date only, including the Native Area Tree Scheme (NTAS).
Last week saw a further 5 licences issued for forestry roads bringing the total to 227 covering 78km. There has been 40km of roads constructed this year.
The figures also show that 153 licences issued by the department so far this year for the Reconstitution of Ash Dieback Scheme, relating to 521ha.
101 licences have been approved for the NTAS (111ha), 24 for the Woodland Improvement Scheme (151ha) and 51 for the Deer Tree Shelter scheme (223ha).
10 licences have been issued for the Climate Resilient Reforestation Scheme covering 60ha.
Two licences have been issued for the Native Woodland Conservation Scheme this year for 17ha.
The department has received 16 appeals relating to afforestation so far this year, 10 on forest roads and 7 on tree felling.
SEEFA
The Social, Economic, and Environmental Forestry Association of Ireland (SEEFA) said that last week was a 'shocking performance reminiscent of the unacceptably low levels of 2023'.
'Although significant progress has been made over the past 18 months, performances like last week's simply cannot be allowed to happen.
'Even one week at this poor level can set us back months in achieving our environmental and economic objectives, undermining hard-won gains,' it said.
The association has urged Minister of State with responsibility for forestry Michael Healy-Rae and his department 'to investigate the underlying causes of last week's disappointing licensing numbers'.
'Immediate action is essential to prevent a return to the unsustainable licensing backlog and numbers that plagued the sector in previous years,' SEEFA said.

Closing dates extended for US-Ireland agri research partnership
An extension of the closing dates of the 2025 call for proposals in agriculture under the US-Ireland Research and Development Partnership has been announced. The call aims to support Irish and US researchers to collaborate on projects across 12 areas important to agriculture. These include animal health and welfare, animal breeding, antimicrobial resistance, soil health, the bioeconomy, data science for food and agriculture, among others. This is a tripartite partnership between the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA in Northern Ireland) and the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA USA). Minister of State at DAFM with special responsibility for research, Noel Grealish said that the partnership "provides a very important mechanism for the collaboration and sharing of expertise and resources between researchers across the three jurisdictions". "This international collaboration can enable our researchers to advance our understanding of complex issues and develop solutions in areas such as mitigating antimicrobial resistance across the food chain, biomanufacturing and the bioeconomy, among others," the minister said. "Last year, my department increased the maximum grant rate to €500,000 for Irish partner institutions involved in successful projects and I would encourage researchers to avail of this unique funding opportunity." The call invites eligible research performing organisations from the Republic of Ireland to submit joint research proposals, with collaborating partners from the US and Northern Ireland, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) of NIFA. The submission deadline for DAFM and DAERA is four weeks in advance of the stated AFRI deadline for the respective programme area priorities in AFRI's Foundation Competitive Grant Programme. Over €2.5m issued in TAMS payments this week
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) paid out over €2.5 million under the Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Schemes (TAMS) this week. TAMS provides grants to farmers to build and/or improve a specified range of farm buildings and equipment on their holding. The latest data, published by the department, shows that €2.56 million was issued under TAMS 3 this week. This means that DAFM has now paid out €88.2 million to farmers under TAMS 3 across 9,997 claims. There has been over 33,300 applications approved across all tranches of TAMS 3 so far, with 12,098 payment claims submitted to the department. This week also saw a further €1,600 issued to farmers under TAMS 2. Meanwhile, the department paid out an additional €410,000 under the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES). This brings the total payments issued for the agri-environmental scheme to €515.5 million. Almost €50,000 was allocated under the 2024 Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) and Areas of Specific Constraint (ASC). This brings the total payments under these measures to €249.2 million to 99,368 farmers. On Wednesday (August 13), Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon confirmed that the 2025 Beef Welfare Scheme is now open for applications. The objective of the scheme is to further increase the economic efficiency of and enhance animal health and husbandry on suckler farms. The payment rates for the Beef Welfare Scheme are as follows: Action 1 – Meal Feeding (mandatory): the rate of payment is €35 per eligible calf up to a maximum of 45 eligible calves; Action 2 – Vaccination (optional): The rate of payment is €15 per eligible calf up to a maximum of 45 eligible calves; Action 3 – Faecal Testing / Forage Testing (optional): The rate of payment is €25 per eligible calf up to a maximum of 45 eligible calves. Applications must be lodged online through the online portal before the closing date of September 24, 2025.

Final registration deadline for NI Soil Nutrient Health Scheme approaching
The final deadline for registering for the Soil Nutrient Health Scheme (SNHS) is fast approaching, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) in Northern Ireland has said. Farm businesses in Co. Antrim (zone 4) and any other farms across zones 1 to 3 which have not already registered should do so before the closing date of midnight on September 1. This is the last time the scheme will be open for registration. The soil scheme, first launched in 2022, is managed by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI). Over 18,600 farm businesses in Zones 1, 2 and 3 are already taking part in the scheme. Zone 1 of the scheme (Co. Down and parts of counties Antrim and Armagh) opened from May to September 2022. Zone 2 (Co. Fermanagh, the west of Co. Armagh and south Co. Tyrone) opened from June to August 2023. Zone 3 (north Co. Tyrone and Co. Derry) opened from June to August 2024. Uptake by farm businesses across zones 1, 2 and 3 was at 90% overall. Farmers in these zones who have not yet registered can still do so. Zone 4 opened for online registrations on June 16, 2025, and to date, over 2,000 farm businesses have registered. As part of the scheme, farm businesses receive information to help match slurry, fertiliser and lime applications to crop needs more accurately. This aims to increase efficiency and protect the environment. Taking part in the scheme and completing the training is planned to be a conditionality for the new Farm Sustainability Payment from January 2026.
