Karnataka govt plans to increase daily work hours to 10; ‘modern-day slavery', say trade unions — check details
The Karnataka government is planning to increase the daily working hours to 10 from the current nine hours, besides allowing more overtime hours, by amending the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishment Act 1961, reported The Hindu.
Working hours and labour conditions in shops and commercial establishments in the state are governed by the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishment Act 1961.
The amendment is aimed at simplifying procedures such as record-keeping and certification, especially for smaller establishments, said the report.
In Karnataka, the work hours can be increased to 10 hours a day and 48 hours a week. The total number of hours of work, including overtime, should not be more than 12 hours a day, said the report.
If the amendment comes into force, companies in the information technology sector are likely to benefit the most.
In 2019 and 2020, the Union government passed four Labour Codes to allow for an increase in working hours.
Following this, states of Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand passed legislations in this regard.
Trade unions on Wednesday strongly opposed the Karnataka government's alleged move to extend daily working hours in certain sectors, including IT.
The state Labour Department on Wednesday convened a meeting with the industry representatives and trade union leaders to discuss the proposed amendment to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, which reportedly seeks to increase the daily working hours to 12.
Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) said it opposed the proposal, calling it a form of "modern-day slavery".
'The government is attempting to normalise inhuman conditions. This amendment is not about productivity—it's about pleasing corporate bosses by turning human beings into machines,' KITU leader Suhas Adiga alleged.
The union appealed to all employees across the sector to unite and resist the proposed changes, which it claims would gravely impact work-life balance and job security.
Noting that the law permitted a maximum of 10 working hours per day including overtime, KITU alleged that the proposed amendment would legalise 12-hour shifts and facilitate a two-shift system, potentially eliminating one-third of the workforce.

Lokesh meets V-P, 4 Union ministers
New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh Minister for IT and HRD Nara Lokesh met Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dankar as well as four union ministers here on Wednesday and highlighted the progress achieved by Andhra Pradesh under the NDA rule over the past one year. After the Vice-President made enquiries about the progress of developmental works relating to Amaravati, Lokesh informed him that the Amaravati works, started with an outlay of Rs 64,000 crore, could be completed in three years. Lokesh presented a book on his Yuva Galam pada yatra to the Vice President. Later, Minister Lokesh met Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah and briefed him on the progress of Andhra Pradesh during the NDA government's one-year period. When Lokesh presented the Union Minister with the book on Yuva Galam pada yatra, Amit Shah congratulated him on undertaking the pada yatra with the objective of knowing the problems of people at close quarters and assured him of Centre's cooperation for the development of Andhra Pradesh state. He said that, as part of this initiative, the government was introducing the Learning Excellence in Andhra Pradesh (LEAP) programme to transform the education ecosystem. A total of 9,600 model primary schools were being established across the state, following a 'One Class – One Teacher' policy. Additionally, 175 LEAP schools - one in each Assembly constituency - were being developed with world-class infrastructure. Around 700 upper primary schools had been upgraded to high schools. Schools were now being awarded ratings based on academic and infrastructural standards, he said. Lokesh invited Pradhan to attend the mega parent-teacher event on July 5. He also requested that Andhra Pradesh be given the opportunity to host the Education Ministers' Conclave in August—a proposal that was accepted by Pradhan. The Union Minister commended Lokesh for his transformative efforts in the education sector.

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah has said the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood is not a concession but a constitutional right. Addressing a meeting of NC workers in south Kashmir's Pulwama district, the former chief minister called for an immediate return to full democratic authority in the region. "Restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood is not a concession but a constitutional right. Statehood is not a gift, it is the people's right, long overdue and repeatedly promised by the ruling government," he said. Farooq is a three-time chief minister of the erstwhile state, a former Member of Parliament (MP) and ex-Union Minister. The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised into the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
