Spanish Muslims retrace ancient Hajj route on horseback from Andalusia to Mecca

CAIRO — Three Spanish pilgrims performing the Hajj in Saudi Arabia rode on horseback to Mecca, traveling thousands of kilometers in snow and rain and along a path they said had not been trekked for more than 500 years. Abdelkader Harkassi Aidi, Tarek Rodriguez and Abdallah Rafael Hernandez Mancha set out from southern Spain in October, riding through France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria and Jordan to arrive in Saudi Arabia in May. It was an emotional moment for the trio when they reached Mecca. No pilgrim had traveled this way since 1491, they said. Harkassi said the group's path from Spain took them across about 8,000 kilometers before they reached the Kaaba, the black cube structure in the Grand Mosque in Mecca. 'We had crossed so many kilometers to be there and Allah had replied to our wish,' he told The Associated Press on Thursday from Arafat, southeast of Mecca. "We were in front of the Kaaba and had the opportunity to touch it. So, that 8,000 kilometers became nothing.' During their monthslong journey they came across scenic stretches of nature and historical landmarks in Syria, including the Aleppo Citadel and the Umayyad Mosque. They also found an old railway track built during the time of the Ottoman Empire that connected Istanbul to Saudi Arabia. They followed it for days to help guide them to the desert kingdom. But there were challenges, too. They lost their horses in Bosnia, only to find them later in a landmine zone. Nobody could fetch the horses because of the explosives, but the animals eventually made it out of the area unharmed, Harkassi said. The human element of the trip was the most valuable for the team, he added. 'When we didn't have anything, people helped us with our horses, with our food, they gave us money. When our assistance car got broken, they fixed it for us," Harkassi said. "People have been incredible. I think it's proof that Muslims are united, that the one ummah that every Muslim longs for is a reality."

Saudi Arabia temporarily suspends this visa for 14 countries; India on the list

In a significant policy move ahead of the upcoming Hajj season, Saudi Arabia has temporarily suspended the issuance of block work visas for citizens from 14 countries, including Bangladesh, India, and Egypt. The decision, which took effect in May 2025, is being attributed to security and administrative concerns, particularly around the management of pilgrims and immigration compliance during the busy Hajj period. Countries that will be impacted with this decision include Bangladesh, India, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Yemen, Sudan, Iraq, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Libya, Kenya, and Turkey. Reports further add that the decision is primarily intended to prevent visa misuse and unauthorised participation in the Hajj pilgrimage, even though Saudi authorities have not issued an official public statement related to this. These are mostly used by companies in the Gulf, who need them frequently to hire foreign labour. Usually, Saudi authorities pre-approve these visas in bulk, and employers then distribute them to employees from different nations. Reportedly, they are frequently employed in industries including domestic services, hospitality, and construction. The current suspension of this system for specific countries has raised concerns among employers who rely on this hiring route to meet labour demands. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Unofficial Hajj entry a key concern According to the reports, a key factor behind the suspension is the concern that many individuals have been entering the Kingdom on work, visit, or Umrah visas and then participating in Hajj without proper permits. This led to serious logistical problems last year, including as crowding and a burden on the pilgrimage's health and safety procedures. To avoid a repeat of these problems, Saudi Arabia has introduced stricter controls this year. Authorities want to ensure that only pilgrims with valid, officially issued Hajj visas are allowed to perform the ritual. The block visa suspension is expected to be one of several measures aimed at tightening these controls. Impact on the labour market While the move is being described as temporary, no clear timeline has been provided for the resumption of block work visas for the affected countries. Companies in a variety of industries, especially those that rely on seasonal or semi-skilled labour, may need to modify their employment strategies. Thousands of workers who were planning to enter Saudi Arabia using these visas are also probably going to be impacted by the suspension. Given that many workers had already started the visa application process, recruiters and agencies in nations like Bangladesh have voiced concerns about the move's logistical and economic effects.
