South Africa's Shoprite pulls out of Ghana and Malawi, marking 7th African market exit

According to Reuters, the company confirmed on Tuesday that its subsidiary, Shoprite Malawi, entered into an agreement on June 6 to sell its five trading stores. The deal remains subject to regulatory approvals, notably from Malawi's Competition and Fair Trading Commission and the Reserve Bank of Malawi.
In Ghana, Shoprite disclosed that it had received a binding offer in June for the acquisition of seven trading stores and a distribution warehouse. The group described the sale as ' highly probable,' signaling a definitive pullout from what was once viewed as a high-growth West African market.
Shoprite's move has revealed the persistent challenges faced by global retailers across several African economies, where currency volatility and shifting economic policies can quickly erode margins.
The company has encountered numerous obstacles i n these regions, including unstable exchange rates, surging inflation, restrictive import regulations, and leases pegged to the US dollar - all of which have weighed on profitability.
Both the Ghanaian and Malawian operations have now been classified as discontinued in Shoprite's financial statements under IFRS 5 accounting standards.
The announcement had an immediate effect on investor sentiment. By 07:53 GMT, Shoprite's shares had fallen 2.60% on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), reflecting concerns over the retailer's diminishing African footprint beyond South Africa.

Starlink's initial appeal hinged on its fast and reliable services, but this has not entirely been the reality of subscribers in the East African country, given that it costs a lot for average Kenyans to access its touted high speeds. "Starlink's high costs and slow speeds have deterred many users," said Chris Orwa, a Nairobi-based data analyst and former subscriber. According to a recent report from Kenya's Communications Authority, Starlink lost more than 10% of its members in the first quarter of 2025. During that period, the company's subscriber base decreased by over 2,000. This reduction occurred despite Kenya's fixed internet market growing by 8%, indicating that although demand for internet is increasing, Starlink is losing ground to competitors. As seen in a report by Bloomberg, Orwa signed up for the service during a time when local providers were suffering outages, but she soon found the experience disappointing. Why Starlink in Kenya is struggling Despite claimed speeds ranging from 25 to 220 Mbps, Ookla detected a median download speed of just 47 Mbps for Starlink in Kenya as of May. Orwa's connection dropped to 10 Mbps at one point, but he still paid roughly 15,000 shillings per month for service improvements and maintenance, more than three times what many local carriers charge. Pricing is another issue. Starlink advertises a 4,000 shilling ($31) per month plan with a hardware cost of 27,000 shillings, but this plan has limits. The standard residential package, which includes prioritized data delivery, can cost up to 6,500 shillings per month, while the hardware costs nearly double. Users like Orwa have reported being obliged to upgrade to more costly bands whenever network capacity in their region is full, thus increasing fees. The problem was exacerbated in late 2024, when Starlink briefly suspended new urban signups owing to network congestion, notably in Nairobi and other heavily populated locations. This is a far cry from a month prior, when a report revealed that Kenyans were rapidly adopting Elon Musk's satellite internet constellation, Starlink. The report revealed that satellite data subscriptions increased by 1,955.3 in the 2023/2024 fiscal year. Although signups restarted in June 2025, the hiatus allowed competitors to respond. "Other internet service providers have made interventions to make their services more appealing," said Moses Kemibaro, a Kenyan technology analyst and Starlink early adopter. These solutions include providing more bandwidth at a reduced cost and improving customer service, which Starlink has struggled with in the region. Additionally, Starlink users continue to complain about poor customer service. With no physical presence in Kenya, users must rely only on online help. Orwa had a disappointing experience in which his hardware problem remained addressed despite registering a complaint in October 2024. "Starlink's online support was not enough," he complained.

Angola regained $200 million in May from its collateral posted to JPMorgan, enabled by the recovery of its sovereign bond prices. A margin call was triggered earlier under a $1 billion return swap agreement due to the bond's value drop caused by falling oil prices. The bond, initially falling to 86 cents on the dollar, recovered its value to 100 cents in recent trading. Angola retrieved $200 million in May from collateral it had posted earlier this year to JPMorgan, following a rebound in the price of its sovereign bonds, the country's finance ministry said. The repayment came after a sharp sell-off in April triggered a margin call under a $1 billion total return swap agreement between Angola and JPMorgan, signed in December, according to Reuters. The one-year derivative deal was backed by $1.9 billion in newly issued Eurobonds, which did not raise fresh cash for the government but served as collateral. As oil prices tumbled amid global tariff tensions, the value of Angola's bonds, quoted at 100 cents on the dollar in March, fell to 86 cents, prompting JPMorgan to demand additional security. The bond has since recovered and was quoted back at 100 cents on Wednesday, traders said. The structure of the deal has drawn criticism from some analysts due to its complexity. Total return swaps are rarely used in sovereign finance, and Angola's use of one shows the rising trend of opaque or unconventional borrowing among heavily indebted, low-rated African nations. The $1.9 billion bond used as collateral for the swap matures in 2030 and is listed on international markets. The financing from JPMorgan was split into two tranches, $600 million and $400 million, though it did not involve the issuance of new funds for public spending. Debt burden Angola, one of Africa's largest crude exporters, faces mounting economic pressures, including high external debt obligations, many backed by oil shipments to China, and growing public unrest over fuel subsidy removals and declining social spending. According to the head of Angola's debt management office, the country's oil-backed debt to China is projected to fall to between $7.5 billion and $8.0 billion by the end of the year.
