Former Chelsea wonderkid dubbed ‘next Eden Hazard' retires aged 28 and admits Blues exit ‘killed me'

The Sun30-06-2025
FORMER Chelsea wonderkid Charly Musonda, once tipped to follow in Eden Hazard's footsteps, has retired from football.
Musonda announced his retirement from professional football at just 28 years old.

The Belgian forward revealed the heart-wrenching news, explaining that years of injuries had left him with no choice but to hang up his boots — despite still being young.
In an emotional video posted on Rising Ballers, Musonda said: "I've got a big announcement today.
"It's not easy but it's something I've been thinking about for a long time. After reflecting on my experiences and who I am, I've realised I want to live with purpose to inspire and motivate others."
Musonda admitted that leaving Chelsea"killed" him, and his career has been overshadowed by a string of injuries and loan moves that never quite worked out.
The emotional winger spoke about his Chelsea exit: "The exit killed me. It killed me mentally. It was the worst thing.
"I was obviously with the reserves at that time so the plan was to pick up with the reserves, get some training in and if there were a few games where I could fit in toward the back end of the season, that was the plan.
"Because I literally had just gotten better. I came back in December-January and was training with the reserves.
"Feeling amazing, happy to be back—obviously it was a long way for me to be fully fit, but just being able to train was amazing.
"The first team was doing really well. It was COVID, so the buildings were split and you wouldn't really see the first team.
"Then toward the back end of the season in the car park I ran into Thomas Tuchel, the manager.
"They were getting ready for the semi-final of the Champions League and he just said, 'How are you feeling? How are things going?.
"It was my first time meeting him. He said, 'I'm looking forward to seeing you back and I said, 'Don't worry, I'll be back for pre-season.
"Because in my mind, it was always pre-season and I'd be back with the first team and we'd see from there.
"So I came back for pre-season and that's where things got tricky. That was the end of my time at Chelsea."

Despite the pain, Musonda isn't bitter, instead, he's channelling his experiences into helping the next generation.
He added about his future plans: "I want to do things with purpose. I want to inspire people and create opportunities.
"I'm still young but I want to help players who don't have the chance to showcase their talent.
"I know how it feels and with football changing so much, many players never get the opportunity to show what they can do, I want to make a difference."
Once hailed as one of the brightest prospects in European football, Musonda's potential was often compared to that of Hazard's during his early days at Stamford Bridge.

However, a series of setbacks-including loan spells at Real Betis and Vitesse Arnhem, meant his career never reached the heights everyone expected.
Despite flashes of brilliance during his time away from Chelsea, Musonda made only a handful of appearances for the Blues and his once-promising future faded into disappointment.
It's the end of a career that promised so much but ultimately never delivered.
However, Musonda's drive to give back could help the next generation avoid the pitfalls that derailed his own career.

Tottenham leave Bissouma out of Super Cup squad due to persistent lateness

Thomas Frank has flexed his muscles to Tottenham's squad by excluding Yves Bissouma from the travelling party to face Paris Saint-Germain owing to persistent lateness. Spurs make their Uefa Super Cup debut in Udine on Wednesday in a fiendish early test for their manager, who is overseeing his first pre-season since moving from Brentford in June. Frank has wasted no time pressing home his standards and explained he had opted against selecting Bissouma, the Mali international midfielder, because of multiple lapses. 'Bissouma has not travelled with the team because of disciplinary reasons,' Frank said after their arrival in north-east Italy. 'He has been late several times and the latest time was one too many. With everything you need to give your players a lot of love but also have demands and there also need to be consequences. This time there was a consequence for that.' Frank suggested the punishment applied only to this fixture and that he would 'follow up when I come home'. The infraction will heighten doubts over Bissouma's future. He has entered the final year of his contract with little sign a new deal is imminent and his three seasons at Tottenham have been decidedly mixed. The club suspended him from the trip to Leicester last August after he was recorded inhaling nitrous oxide and their former manager Ange Postecoglou said he 'sometimes lets the game drift by him' after the defeat by Fulham in March. Although the Super Cup sits below Uefa's three other major club competitions in terms of prestige, Frank played up the importance of following their Europa League win by toppling the Champions League holders. 'It's a massive game,' he said. 'A great challenge and an even bigger opportunity. That's how my brain works, I see opportunities instead of pressure. So for me, massive opportunity. We will definitely embrace it and we will do everything.' Spurs's squad for the coming Premier League season remains incomplete and they are trying to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace under the noses of Arsenal. Frank did not take the bait when asked about any deal for the forward. 'There are a lot of good players out there, there are also a few from the PSG team, but I don't think we can buy them right now.' he said. 'In general, players in and players out, I'm only speaking if something is done or not done.' On the brighter side, Dominic Solanke has recovered from an ankle injury that has plagued his summer and should take a place on the bench. Destiny Udogie is also available after a knee problem.

PSG 'are not unbeatable' - Davies and Vicario eye 'great things'

Paris St-Germain are not "invincible" and Tottenham are "ready to fight together" for Wednesday's Super Cup, says defender Ben Davies and goalkeeper Guglielmo get their season underway when they face Champions League winners PSG in will be the first opportunity for silverware for new boss Thomas Frank but, despite PSG losing in the Club World Cup final to Chelsea, it will still be a tough test against the French champions."It's quite clear we will be playing against one of the best teams in world football right now," Davies said."They have so much talent all across the pitch and it's definitely going to be a challenge."But, over the summer we saw that, whilst they played some incredible games, they are not unbeatable and invincible. We need to take some confidence from that and try and put our best foot forward to win the game tomorrow."Vicario, who will be playing in his home country when the sides step out at the Stadio Friuli, added: "I am one of the oldest players in the dressing room. Now is the moment to step up and to take responsibilities."I see a group of players ready to fight together. I don't want to give them any advice but we need to drive this team to the best possible version that we can achieve."We need to start doing that from tomorrow night. I think we can do great things together."

Texans place TE Brevin Jordan (knee) on injured reserve

August 12 - The Houston Texans placed tight end Brevin Jordan on injured reserve Tuesday, one day after he hurt his knee in practice. Multiple media reports noted that Jordan's injury is season ending. Jordan was injured after landing awkwardly in an unsuccessful attempt to reel in a seam pass from C.J. Stroud during an 11-on-11 drill during Monday's practice. Jordan initially was able to stand before falling back to the ground and grabbing his lower leg. He was then carted off the field. Jordan saw his season come to an end in Week 2 last year after tearing his ACL in a game against the Chicago Bears. "It's tough for everybody to see Brevin going down, knowing how much work he's put in to get back to this point of playing football and how excited he was to get back to playing football," Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters on Monday. Jordan, 25, has totaled 53 catches for 532 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 36 career games (12 starts) since being selected by the Texans in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Houston has Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover atop its tight end depth chart. The Texans signed offensive tackle Conor McDermott to fill the roster spot on Tuesday. McDermott, 32, last played in 2023 with the New England Patriots. He has started 17 of the 55 games in which he has played with the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and Patriots since being selected by New England in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. --Field Level Media
