Farmers body KMM opposes Punjabs land-pooling policy

Chandigarh, Jul 23 (PTI) Farmers' body Kisan Mazdoor Morcha on Wednesday opposed the Punjab government's land-pooling policy, alleging that the Bhagwant Mann dispensation wanted to 'plunder" farmers' fertile land at the behest of corporates under the garb of this scheme.
Rejecting the policy in a meeting held here, KMM said farmers will hand over memorandums at district headquarters on July 28, seeking its withdrawal.
KMM coordinator Sarwan Singh Pandher said it will also hold a rally 'Zameen Bachao Pind Bachao Punjab Bachao' against the land-pooling policy on August 20 in Jalandhar.
Speaking to reporters here, Pandher said that on August 11, a motorcycle march will be taken out to protest against the policy.
Pandher said farmers do not want to part with their land and alleged that the state government wanted to 'plunder" farmers' fertile land on the pretext of setting up urban development at the behest of real estate companies.
He further said that many village panchayats in the state are passing resolutions against the policy.
Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which is a conglomerate of more than 30 farmer bodies, has already opposed the land-pooling policy and demanded its withdrawal.
The AAP government has been facing flak from the opposition parties, which dubbed the policy a 'looting" scheme to 'rob" farmers of their land.
The Punjab Cabinet last month gave its nod to the land-pooling policy, and had then asserted that not even a single yard will be forcibly acquired from land owners.
Under the land pooling policy, a land owner will be given a 1,000 square yards of residential plot and a 200 square yards of commercial plot in fully developed land in lieu of one acre of land, the state government had said earlier. PTI CHS MNK MNK

Bathinda: Despite Punjab govt's attempts to assure farmers that the Land Pooling Policy would benefit them, protests against the scheme continued to gain ground on Wednesday, with farm groups rallying support through marches in villages, and BJP announcing a yatra across the state from Aug 17. Activists of farm organisation BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) and members of other unions affiliated to Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) held rallies in villages to drum up support for their protest in Samrala, Ludhiana, on Aug 24. Opposition parties are also taking on the AAP govt over the contentious policy. Farmers argued that the Punjab govt was not capable of collecting land on such a large scale with limited resources. "State govt is eyeing industry and feels the agriculture sector is stagnating. It feels the state could be taken towards prosperity by ensuring an industrial revolution, even though big industrial houses do not prefer Punjab. Farmers will not allow such designs of the govt. It wants to collect land by pulling Punjab away from agriculture, which is the mainstay of its economy, but we won't let it succeed," said BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) secretary Shingara Singh Mann. Before the call for a rally on Aug 24, SKM gave another action plan of protest on Aug 13. BJP has announced a 'Save Land, Save Farmers' yatra from Aug 17 to Sep 5, led by its state working president, Ashwani Sharma. The yatra will start from Patiala and pass through Malwa, Majha, and Doaba regions, and end in Pathankot on Sep 5. Another farm group, Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), announced a state-level mahapanchayat at Kukkar Pind, Jalandhar, on Aug 20 against the policy. KMM functionaries Sarwan Singh Pandher and Manjit Singh Rai said KMM would organise a motorcycle rally on Aug 11. Kukkar Pind is among six villages in Jalandhar where 1,000 acres has been notified under the policy. CM Bhagwant Mann has repeatedly said that land-pooling would be "100% voluntary" but anxiety over the scheme continues to grip farmers. AAL MLAs have been told to visit villages and dispel misgivings.

Karnataka to complete AI workforce impact survey in a month
Karnataka IT Minister Priyank Kharge on Tuesday said the state is talking to companies to evaluate the impact of AI on workforce and the assessment is expected to be completed in about a month. The comment assumes significance in the backdrop of TCS' decision to slash 12,000 jobs this year. The unexpected move by India's largest IT services company has sent fresh tremors in the tech industry, that has been battling global macroeconomic woes and geopolitical uncertainty. On the Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees' Union reportedly seeking action against TCS over the job cuts, Kharge said Karnataka does not recognise unions in IT sector. He, however, added that "if there are concerns raised by public and people, it is our responsibility to address it". "We are talking to companies to ask them what exactly we can do to ensure our HR or talent is most employable. We are getting a survey done with the companies on AI affect in workforce," Kharge told PTI on sidelines of SAP Labs India event. He added that the process is expected to be completed in about a month. It is pertinent to mention here that India's top IT services companies have delivered single-digit revenue growth in Q1 FY26, capping off a somewhat-sobering June quarter as macroeconomic instability and geopolitical tensions have weighed on global tech demand and delayed client decision making.

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on Indian goods, which will take effect from August 7. This move raised major concerns about its potential impact on the Indian economy. However, there's some good news a new report suggests the impact will be minimal. According to a study by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), the tariff is expected to affect India's GDP by only 0.19%, which is almost negligible. Out of India's total exports worth $86.5 billion, only $8.1 billion around 1.87% will be affected by this move. Trump Tariffs: What PHDCCI Study Says? The paper, released by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), also recommends a series of measures to mitigate the impact of US tariffs. 'Our analysis indicates that there will be an estimated impact of only 1.87 per cent on India's total global merchandise exports and a negligible 0.19 per cent on India's GDP as a result of a 25 per cent tariff announced by the US on India,' said Hemant Jain, President, PHDCCI. The study said the total potential export impact is estimated at USD 8.1 billion based on 2024-25 merchandise exports of USD 86.5 billion (1.87 per cent of India's total global export). Which Sectors Will Impact By Trump Tariffs? Among other sectors, the study said the levies would impact engineering goods (USD 1.8 billion), gems and jewellery (USD 932 million), and ready-made garments (USD 500 million). In the wake of the US tariffs, the industry body has recommended several measures, including increasing market penetration, product development and market diversification. It suggested that stakeholders should negotiate bundled-pricing deals (textiles plus accessories) to absorb some tariff cost and maintain shelf-price competitiveness. 'Leverage Indian diaspora networks (trade fairs, cultural events) to boost volume with existing buyers under current product portfolios,' it said. PHDCCI also made a strong case for investments in joint ventures with US firms to produce tariff-sensitive goods on-shore, thereby converting exports into high-value services and intellectual property (IP) licensing.
