Barcelona midfielder's recovery progressing well, return set for September

Yahoo17 hours ago
Barcelona youngster Marc Bernal continues to make steady progress in his recovery from a serious knee injury, but his return to the pitch is not expected until September.
According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the 18-year-old midfielder is working hard in training but will not be rushed back into action.
Bernal suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, along with damage to his external meniscus, during Barcelona's league clash against Rayo Vallecano on 27 August 2024. Weeks later, he underwent surgery and was given a 12-month recovery plan.
Despite returning to full training intensity, the club's medical staff and coaches have decided to follow a cautious approach.
The plan is to have Bernal back in competitive action after the first international break in September, targeting the La Liga fixture against Valencia. This would mark almost exactly one year since his operation.

The decision to wait until September is not due to any setback in Bernal's recovery. On the contrary, his rehabilitation has gone smoothly, and he has shown no signs of complications.
However, Barcelona's approach follows the advice of top specialists in sports medicine, who recommend that young players recovering from knee injuries take their time before returning.
Experts believe that for players still developing physically, a slower and more careful rehabilitation process reduces the risk of long-term damage and improves the chances of a full recovery.
This approach is becoming more common in elite football, especially with injuries as serious as an ACL tear.
For Barcelona, Bernal is a valuable talent for the future, and the club is willing to wait a few extra weeks to ensure he returns in peak condition.
While fans may be eager to see him back on the pitch, the focus remains on protecting his long-term career and avoiding any risk of recurrence.

Napheesa Collier upgraded to 'doubtful' on Lynx's injury report for Saturday's matchup vs. Liberty

Napheesa Collier's injury status has been upgraded from "out" to "doubtful for the Minnesota Lynx's matchup on with the New York Liberty, the team announced on Friday. Collier, 28, has missed the Lynx's past three games with a sprained right ankle. The injury was expected to sidelined her for at least two weeks, so the change in her status follows that timeline. Being upgraded to doubtful means that she will probably still miss Saturday's game versus the Liberty. Nonetheless, it's an encouraging sign for her return. At 27-6, the Lynx have the WNBA's best record, six games ahead of the No. 2 seeded Atlanta Dream and 6.5 in front of the Liberty. Minnesota has already clinched a playoff spot. Prior to her injury, Collier was building a strong case to win WNBA MVP. She's the league's leading scorer, averaging 23.5 points per game in addition to 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.6 blocks. Last season, she finished as runner-up in MVP voting to the Las Vegas Aces' A'ja Wilson while winning Defensive Player of the Year honors. While no timetable for Collier's return has been announced publicly, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve told reporters, including the New York Post's Madeline Kenney, that the star forward is "progressing well" and expected to return before the end of the regular season. Including Saturday's contest, the Lynx have 12 games remaining on their regular season schedule. Saturday's game between the Lynx and Liberty is the second of three consecutive matchups between the two teams, alternating between New York and Minnesota in a curious quirk of the WNBA schedule. The Lynx won the first meeting this season, 100-93, with Collier scoring 30 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Sabrina Ionescu led all scorers with 31 points for the Liberty. The Lynx and Liberty played for the WNBA championship last season, with New York winning the Finals in five games. The two teams could be on the path to a rematch.

Villarreal offer ‘short of expectations' for Chelsea defender Renato Veiga — report

Villarreal were linked with unwanted Chelsea defender Axel Disasi earlier this summer, and though nothing came of that, they are still in need of reinforcements at the position and have thus switched their target to unwanted Chelsea defender Renato Veiga instead — and according to Fabrizio Romano, have even made an official play for their 'dream target'. Unfortunately, back in the real world, it sounds like the financial realities of the situation remain the same as before. The La Liga side were not willing or able to spend €30m on Disasi — their record incoming transfer is barely over €20m — and Chelsea are said to be wanting even more for Veiga (€40?!). Whatever their bid is now, it's fallen short of our 'expectations'. This is the trouble in trying to do business outside of England (or Saudi Arabia) or with teams that are not among the European elite. The Premier League (top to bottom) are so far above of most other leagues financially that it becomes an exercise in futility. The levels of money are simply different, even if they are willing to spend. Villarreal finished fifth last season, but were still able to nab a Champions League spot (Spain, like England, get an extra spot thanks to their UEFA coefficient). So perhaps that little boost in income can be turned into a bit of extra cash for Veiga?
