Parliamentary panel suggestions on Income Tax Bill 2025 tabled in Lok Sabha

New Delhi: The Parliamentary Select Committee appointed to review the new Income Tax Bill 2025 has proposed to change the definition of "beneficial owner" to allow carry forward losses as individuals who derive benefits directly or indirectly from shares during the tax year. The 31-member Select Committee, chaired by BJP leader Baijayant Panda , has made 285 suggestions to the draft Income tax bill 2025 in a 4,575 page report tabled in Lok Sabha Monday. The committee has also called for more clarity on the definition of non-performing assets, intending to resolve the long-standing dispute over the definition of NPA under banking and tax laws. The panel wants the term 'parent company' clearly defined, and asked the department to fix gaps in clauses covering capital gains and sought proper provisions for non-profit organisations, highlighting that religious-cum-charitable trusts should not lose exemptions for anonymous donations. The committee calls for eliminating any residual references to the 1961 Act to make the new code self-contained and litigation-resistant. Live Events "Collectively, these recommendations underscore the committee's focus on promoting taxpayer protection, enhancing fairness, and reducing compliance burdens," said Amit Maheshwari, Tax Partner, AKM Global, a tax and consulting firm. If enacted, these provisions are expected to strengthen transparency, minimize disputes, and further the government's ambition of creating a contemporary, efficient, and user-friendly tax regime." Experts said the report will add more clarity to the new bill left out in the original draft. "Importantly, the report addresses concerns of charitable and not-for-profit entities by advocating clearer definitions, replacing "receipts" with "income" for tax purposes, and restoring the concept of "deemed application", urges inclusion of professionals under electronic payment norms, prescribes qualifications for valuers, and recommends contextual fairness in GAAR provisions," Sandeep Jhunjhunwala, M&A Tax Partner at Nangia Andersen LLP, said.

Will ask Centre to restart Goa-London AI flight: Sawant

Porvorim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant said that the five to seven flights shifted to Manohar International Airport, Mopa, from Goa International Airport, Dabolim, had no impact on hotels. He said that he would write to Union govt on Tuesday to restart the Air India flight from Goa to London, which was recently cancelled. Sawant said the shifting of flights is having a small impact on the taxi business. He also said that since the Mopa airport began functioning, Goa has been handling twice the number of flights. Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said that former CM Manohar Parrikar and Sawant assured the House that not a single flight would be shifted from Dabolim to Mopa, and that new airlines would connect Goa to other parts of the country and the world from Mopa. He questioned whether govt carried out any feasibility study to determine if two airports can coexist in the state. The CM also said that over Rs 65 crore in revenue was earned from Mopa airport. He said govt is upgrading infrastructure at the Dabolim airport so that it continues operations and that govt is committed to increasing the number of flights to Dabolim. Sawant also said that even if tourists land at Mopa airport, they travel to the south as they prefer to stay there, and there is no impact on the hotel industry. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He added that the cruise terminal at Vasco is operational and will bring more tourists to the state. 'Dabolim airport will not close,' said Sawant. His statement on writing to Centre to restart the Air India flight to London came after Lobo raised the issue. The Calangute MLA said that the Air India direct flight was always full, and that the cancellation created inconvenience for people of the state who want to travel to London. He urged govt to immediately take up the matter with Centre.

India's smartphone shipments rebound in Q2, driven by new launches and inventory push

New Delhi: Smartphone shipments rose in the three months ended June, rebounding from two straight quarters of decline, as inventory challenges eased for brands, spurring fresh launches and vendor activity, according to market trackers. Shipments grew 7% on-year and 21% sequentially to 39 million units in Q2 2025, according to Canalys. IDC's preliminary data reported an estimated 34-36 million units getting shipped, a 3-4% rise on-year. Explore courses from Top Institutes in Select a Course Category Counterpoint Research expects the industry to record flat shipment growth in the first half of 2025, after recovering in the second quarter with 7% on-year increase, recovering from a 7% decline in Q1 to 32 million units. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa Prices in Dubai Might Be Lower Than You Think! "The growth in Q2 was primarily launch-led momentum, rather than organic demand in the market, which remains persistently low," said Sanyam Chaurasia, analyst at Canalys. Live Events According to IDC, brands significantly added inventory in the June quarter, particularly through offline retail channels. Vivo and Oppo saw sustained growth in the first half of 2025, growing 31% and 24% on-year respectively, according to Canalys. Offline channels embraced new launches from the two Chinese brands due to higher dealer margins. Others, like Samsung kept a more measured approach ahead of the festive season, with shipments growing a marginal 2% on-year. Xiaomi's shipments were 25% lower on-year in Q2 but improved sequentially after a muted first quarter, Canalys said. Apple continued growth momentum, ranking sixth in Q2, with iPhone 16 accounting for over 55% of shipments.
