Israeli kills Odeh Hadalin, Palestinian activist who worked on Oscar-winning 'No Other Land'

ALBAWABA - Palestinian activist and teacher Odeh Hadalin, who helped in the creation of the Oscar-winning film 'No Other Land,' was recently shot and killed by an Israeli settler in Masafer Yatta, West Bank, according to several local reports.
Odeh Hadalin, who helped document the Israeli attacks on Palestinians residing in Masafer Yatta, "was shot dead by settlers… during their attack on the village of Umm al-Khair," as reported by the Palestinian Authority's Ministry of Education.
The two filmmakers behind No Other Land, Yuval Abraham and Basel Adra, also confirmed his death on social media.
Adra took to social media and wrote, "My dear friend Awdah was slaughtered this evening. He was standing in front of the community centre in his village when a settler fired a bullet that pierced his chest and took his life."
He added, "This is how Israel erases us — one life at a time."
Additionally, Abraham also wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), "Odeh just died. Murdered."
The confirmation came right after Abraham revealed that Odeh Hadalin was shot in the lungs by an Israeli settler.
The Israeli police released a statement disclosing that the settler responsible was arrested alongside four Palestinians and two foreign tourists connected to the incident, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The settler in question was identified as Yinon Levi after videos of the incident flooded social media.
According to the Palestinian agency Wafa, one of the Palestinians was rushed to the hospital by an ambulance after being injured by one of the Israeli settlers.

Palestinians say settlers' arson attack kills man in West Bank

SILWAD, Palestinian Territories — The Palestinian Authority said Israeli settlers set fire to homes and cars in a West Bank village on Thursday, killing one man, in the latest attack in the occupied territory. "Forty-year-old Khamis Abdel-Latif Ayad was martyred due to smoke inhalation caused by fires set by settlers in citizens' homes and vehicles in the village of Silwad at dawn," the Palestinian health ministry said in a statement. Witnesses provided corresponding accounts of the attack on Silwad, a village in the central West Bank near several Israeli settlements. Raafat Hussein Hamed, a resident of Silwad whose house was torched in Thursday's attack, said that "a car dropped them [the settlers] off somewhere, they burned whatever they could and then ran away". Hamed said the assailants "come from an outpost", referring to wildcat settlements that are illegal under Israeli law, as opposed to formally recognised settlements. All settlements in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967, are illegal under international law. The Palestinian Authority (PA) said some villages around Silwad also came under attack by settlers, with vehicles, homes and farmlands set ablaze. According to the PA's government media office, "Israeli soldiers accompanying the settlers fired live bullets and tear gas at unarmed Palestinian civilians who tried to defend the communities." Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military said it was looking into the reported incidents. The West Bank is home to some three million Palestinians, who live alongside about 500,000 Israeli settlers. Violence in the territory has surged throughout the Gaza war triggered by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel. Earlier this month, the Palestinian Authority and witnesses in the village of Taybeh -- just southeast of Silwad -- reported two arson attacks by Israeli settlers. In 2015, a Palestinian couple and their baby burned to death after settlers attacked their village of Duma, also in the central West Bank. According to an AFP tally based on PA figures, Israeli security forces and settlers have killed at least 966 Palestinians in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war. At least 36 Israelis, including civilians and troops, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations over the same period, according to official figures.

The US soldier then told the BBC, "I've never seen such brutality." A UN-backed security agency revealed that "the worst-case scenario of famine" is currently unfolding in Gaza. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, the death toll in Gaza has surpassed the 60,000 mark, with over 147 deaths, including 88 children, due to starvation. The ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, has also left more than 145,000 Palestinians injured. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (

France brands Israeli settler violence 'terrorism'

PARIS — France on Tuesday condemned the "murder" in the West Bank of a Palestinian activist who contributed to an Oscar-winning documentary, describing Israeli settler violence as "terrorism". Palestinian authorities said Israeli settlers killed Awdah Muhammad Hathaleen, a teacher, on Monday. The Israeli police said it was investigating but did not directly comment on the claim that he was killed by settlers. "France condemns this murder with the utmost firmness as well as all deliberate acts of violence committed by extremist settlers against the Palestinian population, which are multiplying across the West Bank," a foreign ministry spokesman said. "These acts of violence are acts of terrorism." The spokesman urged Israeli authorities to "immediately sanction the perpetrators of these acts of violence, which continue with complete impunity, and protect Palestinian civilians". The Palestinian Authority's education ministry accused Israeli settlers of killing Hathaleen "during their attack on the village of Umm al-Khair" near Hebron, in the south of the occupied territory. The Israeli police said it was investigating an "incident near Carmel," a settlement neighbouring Umm al-Khair, adding that an Israeli had been arrested for questioning. Awdah Hathaleen was a resident of Masafer Yatta, a string of hamlets on the hills south of Hebron, which have been declared a military zone by Israel. Their efforts to prevent Israeli forces from destroying their homes was the subject of "No Other Land", which won Best Documentary prize at the Oscars in March. Its Israeli co-director, Yuval Abraham, posted a video on Instagram showing a man with a gun in his hand arguing with a group of people, while shouts can be heard in Hebrew and Arabic. "An Israeli settler just shot (Awdah Hathaleen) in the lungs, a remarkable activist who helped us film 'No Other Land' in Masafer Yatta," Abraham wrote. About three million Palestinians live in the West Bank alongside nearly half a million Israelis living in settlements, which are considered illegal under international law. Israeli soldiers or settlers have killed at least 962 Palestinians, including fighters and civilians, since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, according to an AFP tally based on PA data.
