Palestinian rights group wins legal bid to challenge UK ban

London, Jul 30 (AP) The co-founder of a UK-based Palestinian rights organisation that has been outlawed by the British government won a legal bid Wednesday to challenge the decision to label the group a terrorist organisation.
A High Court judge ruled that the government's decision on Palestine Action can be reviewed. The ban puts Palestine Action on par with the likes of al-Qaida and Hamas. It means membership in the group or support for its actions is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper moved to ban Palestine Action after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base at Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on June 20 to protest British military support for Israel's war with Hamas. The activists sprayed red paint into the engines of two tanker planes and caused further damage with crowbars.
Earlier this month, lawyers for co-founder Huda Ammori asked a judge to allow her to bring the High Court challenge over the ban, describing it as an 'unlawful interference" with her freedom of expression.
On Wednesday, Justice Martin Chamberlain said two of the issues presented were 'reasonably arguable" and that as such the challenge can proceed.
He said an argument can be made that the ban might conflict with rights to free speech, and that Cooper could have sought wider consultation before going ahead with the ban, which was backed by Parliament earlier this month.
'This landmark decision to grant a judicial review which could see the Home Secretary's unlawful decision to ban Palestine Action quashed, demonstrates the significance of this case for freedoms of speech, expression and assembly and rights to natural justice in our country and the rule of law itself," Ammori said after the ruling.
Police have made scores of arrests at demonstrations supporting the group on recent weekends. (AP) GSP

NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Saturday slammed the BJP-led Mahayuti government for failing to address the rising crime rate in Maharashtra, accusing it of being a mute spectator as miscreants had no fear of the law. Speaking to reporters here, the Baramati MP claimed that a Rs 4,900 crore scam had taken place in the Majhi Ladki Bahin Yogana, the government's flagship scheme that provides a monthly assistance of Rs 1,500 to women. She said parts of the state, including Pune and Beed districts, have witnessed a steady surge in crimes, while the government remains a mute spectator. "People have lost faith in the system. There is no fear of the law. Who is backing these criminals? Instead of looking into these questions, the government chooses to stay silent," she said. Sule criticised the delay in the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the 2022 murder of Parli-based businessman Mahadev Munde. "Only after Munde's wife, Dnyaneshwari, attempted self-immolation and met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, did the government act. We demand a fair and transparent probe by the SIT," she said. Sule also raised concerns about the recent communal unrest at Yavat in Daund tehsil, where groups of persons, angered by a social media post, vandalised and set ablaze properties. "This is a sensitive region. Political leaders and outsiders coming in and inciting unrest is unacceptable. I urge the chief minister and deputy chief ministers to control their people," she said. Sule urged Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, also the guardian minister of Pune, to ensure peace and communal harmony in Daund. "We have deep roots in Daund. Let's not allow outsiders to disturb its social fabric," she said. Maharashtra has become an example of how power and money can derail governance, she claimed. "There is a Rs 4,900-crore scam in the Ladki Bahin scheme. Farmers are committing suicide, and yet the government is focused on self-promotion," she alleged. Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare recently admitted that nearly 26.34 lakh ineligible persons, including men, were availing benefits of the Ladki Bahin scheme. On Fadnavis's recent remarks about rising hooliganism in Pune, Sule said, "If you acknowledge there's a law and order issue, what action have you taken? Who is protecting these contractors and gangsters?" She also flagged irregularities in the Election Commission's handling of voter rolls in Bihar, demanding a detailed discussion in the Parliament on electoral transparency and accountability.

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday made a claim that former finance minister Arun Jaitley had threatened him to not speak against the farm laws, reported PTI, which were quashed by the BJP as "fake news". The BJP also asked the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha to stick to facts. Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi said, while addressing Congress' annual legal conclave at the Vigyan Bhawan, 'I remember when I was fighting the farm laws—he's not here anymore, so I really shouldn't say it, but I will—Arun Jaitley ji was sent to me to threaten me.' "He said to me, 'If you carry on down this path, opposing the government and fighting us on the farm laws, we will have to take action against you.' "I looked at him in the face and said, 'I think you don't know or have an idea who you're talking to. Because, we are Congress people, and we're not cowards. We never bend; the superpower British couldn't bend us and who the hell are you'." Rahul Gandhi added. Responding back to Rahul Gandhi's claims, Rohan Jaitley, son of the former union minister, slammed him over his remarks. Jaitley's son Rohan also took to X, saying, "Rahul Gandhi now claims my late father, Arun Jaitley, threatened him over the farm laws. Let me remind him, my father passed away in 2019. The farm laws were introduced in 2020." "More importantly, it was not in my father's nature to threaten anyone over an opposing view. He was a staunch democrat and always believed in building consensus," he wrote. 'If at all such a situation was to occur, as it often does in politics, he would invite free and open discussions to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution to all. That was simply who he was and that remains his legacy today.' "I would appreciate Rahul Gandhi being mindful while speaking of those not with us. He attempted something similar with Manohar Parrikar ji, politicising his final days which was in equally poor taste," he added. HC upholds charges against suspended Delhi govt official Khakha
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has reportedly refused to quash the charges framed against suspended Delhi government official Premoday Khakha, who allegedly raped a minor girl several times. The High Court also upheld the charges of causing the minor girl's miscarriage and the disappearance of evidence framed against the official's wife, Seema Rani. It further refused to set aside the charge against his two children and wife under Section 21 of the POCSO Act for failure to report the offence despite having knowledge. 'This court is of the considered opinion that there is no perversity or legal infirmity in the order passed by the sessions court framing charges against petitioner Premoday Khakha for offences under Sections 376(2)(f), 376(3), 323, and 354 of the IPC, and Sections 6 and 8 of the POCSO Act,' Justice Swarana Kana Sharma said in the judgment passed on July 15 and made available on July 28.
