BBC Breakfast viewers 'switch off' as they fume over 'waste of time' Nicola Sturgeon interview - and have a burning question for show bosses
BBC Breakfast viewers said they 'switched off' during an unbearably long interview with Nicola Sturgeon - and put one burning question to show bosses. In Tuesday's installment of the morning news programme, hosts Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell spoke to the former Scottish First Minister ahead of the publication of her new memoir. Sturgeon, 55, told how the upcoming book, titled Frankly, delves into the details of her 2023 arrest as part of an investigation into the SNP 's finances. It also explores her experience of suffering a miscarriage, her past handling of legislation and her sexuality - which she does not consider 'to be binary'. 'I've become used to my life, over the years, being talked about in great detail,' she said. 'I don't complain about that, I put myself into the public eye. But I wanted at this stage of my life to tell my story in my words. '[Of] the remarkable experiences I've had in politics and the ups and downs of a life in politics. 'So, inevitably, some of the challenges and the low points of being covered, because I've tried to speak really candidly about them. 'But the book's also really, really full of all the really positive, extraordinary experiences I've had over 30 years of the most remarkable period in modern Scottish and, to some extent, UK political history. 'So, it's been a lot of fun reminiscing about all of that, writing all of that, and remembering it all.' But viewers were not impressed with the sheer length of the interview - with Sturgeon's segment consuming a whopping 20-minute slot. Fans flocked to social media to criticise what many perceived as a 'commercial'. One wrote: 'Fifteen minutes of Nicola Sturgeon, and counting, equals a very slow news day.' Another said simply: 'Seriously, that's enough now,' while a third chimed in: 'A huge BBC breakfast plug for Nicola Sturgeon's new book. A full 10-minute commercial for her, and to plug her book tour.' And several viewers questioned whether there was enough news to pad out the 3.5 hour show. One wrote: 'Just turned BBC Breakfast off. Why are they giving more airtime to Sturgeon?' And another added: 'This interview with Sturgeon is a waste of time. Apart from the break for the local news, we've had 30 mins of in-studio interviews... No news?' Elsewhere in her memoir, Sturgeon claims the late Queen asked for 'gossip' about the Alex Salmond sex claims. The Monarch immediately asked for details when the women met at Balmoral Castle a few weeks after misconduct claims against Salmond first emerged in 2018. Claiming the Queen 'loved a bit of gossip', Sturgeon wrote in her autobiography Frankly: 'She asked me about it almost as soon as I sat down. She wanted to know more of what was going on.' Describing herself as a republican 'at heart and by instinct', Sturgeon lavishes praise on the late Queen as 'utterly fascinating' and 'an incredible woman'. She says she was 'struck by the aura' she 'exuded as she entered the room', and said she had 'a mystique' around her that no other member of the Royal Family has. Sturgeon's 470-page book is officially released on Thursday, when she is due to talk about it at the Edinburgh Book Festival. But copies went on sale in branches of Waterstones across Scotland on Sunday, with the company insisting no sales embargo was in place. Writing about a visit she and her husband Peter Murrell made to Balmoral in September 2018, Sturgeon said she enjoyed her audiences with the Queen at the Highland estate.

Brit living in Spain warns tourist to avoid 'DANGEROUS' area in popular holiday destination
A British content creator living in a bustling Spanish party town has issued a stark warning to tourists visiting one 'dangerous' area. Harry Poulton, 24, from Brighton, has gained a following of over 49,000 on TikTok under the handle @harrytokky, where he regularly shares travel advice and insider tips from his life in Benidorm. In a recent video that has already amassed more than 21,000 views, he highlighted a location near Benidorm's Old Town - specifically between the Helios and Venus hotels - as a hotspot for pickpocketers targeting unsuspecting tourists. He urged holidaymakers to steer clear of the area - or risk losing their belongings, reports Luxury Travel Daily. Filming near the roundabout between the two hotels, Poulton said: 'If you're coming to Benidorm, this area behind me you need to be very careful.' He added: 'A few people have told me recently they have been pickpocketed around this area.' Poulton cautioned visitors to keep their belongings secure and avoid flashing valuables such as phones and cash. He said: 'Make sure to be a little bit vigilant. Have a bag, a handbag, a man bag. In a recent video that has already amassed more than 21,000 views, he highlighted a location near Benidorm's Old Town - specifically between the Helios and Venus hotels - as a hotspot for pickpocketers targeting unsuspecting tourists 'Honestly, the amount of people I see at the moment walking around Benidorm with their phones half out their pockets, with cash hanging out their pockets – it's crazy. 'And unfortunately, when there's tourists, there's pickpockets.' Poulton, who previously made headlines for warning that Brits were being fined up to €100 for building sandcastles on the beach, insists he's not trying to deter people from visiting Benidorm, but rather encouraging awareness. He added: 'Make sure you're a little bit cautious around this area, especially late at night.' Viewers have since flocked to the comments to share their reactions, as one TikTok user shared: 'Never go there again full of robbers.' Another said, 'There all over Benidorm so nowt new there,' as a third urged, 'Stay at the venus never seen anyone hanging around that area.' Meanwhile, British holidaymakers have been warned against one particularly grotesque act on a Portuguese beach that has been branded 'bizarre' and 'brazen.' Tourists in the coastal city of Albufeira have been ordered to stop urinating and defecating in an area that's not only frequented by UK holidaymakers, but is also home to large British expat community. At Santa Eulália beach, officials have erected an angry sign that reads 'NíO URINAR' in Portuguese, which translates to 'Don't Urinate.' However, below the sign is an extra message in English with the words: 'No poop and pee.' It also features a bold red line running through an image of a male figure urinating and another defecting. The unconventional sign, located near the waterfront, does not explicitly target British tourists, but it appears to be a response to a growing issue in the area.

Abta to host conference call with government to help prepare members for new EU border rules
ABTA is working closely with officials in the EU and UK to establish how EES will operate and what it will mean for UK travel businesses and their customers. The conference call will be an opportunity to share that insight with members as they prepare for implementation on 12th October. The 29 countries involved in EES will have the option to adopt a phased approach, building up to being fully operational by 10 April 2026. The call will take place on Tuesday 9th September 2025, between 11am and 12pm. Members can register to attend the call through the link provided in the ABTA MemberZone - EES/ETIAS – information for members | ABTA Luke Petherbridge, Director of Public Affairs at ABTA – The Travel Association said: 'After a false start in autumn last year, the EU has confirmed that EES will start on 12th October, but with a phased approach. We're keen members have the opportunity to hear from the UK Government experts involved in EES on how the phased implementation will work, so that they are able to advise their staff, make any operational changes needed and support their customers. 'As EES is going to launch in a way that is quite different to how it was originally planned, even if members have attended previous ABTA sessions on EES, it's important they also come along to this one as some of the information is different.'
