A$AP Rocky, Ice Spice, and Denzel Light Up Spike Lee's New Crime Epic

Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty Brooklyn came alive as Spike Lee unveiled his latest film, Highest 2 Lowest , with a star-packed premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Fort Greene — the very neighborhood that helped shape his cinematic voice. The red carpet and after party was a who's-who of film, and music: Denzel Washington and his beautiful wife of 42 years Pauletta, A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright, Boris Kodjoe with Nicole Ari Parker, Chance the Rapper, Slick Rick, NBA champion Rick Fox, Key (of Key and Peele) and breakout acting star popular rapper Ice Spice, who makes her acting debut in the film. Radio/TV personality Jazmyn Summers was there for Radio One to get the tea. Speaking at the premiere, Denzel shared a key line from his character: 'You don't tell God no, you take it and make it work.' As he reflected on choosing roles carefully, he admitted, 'Increasingly now… I don't have to [do a project], but more importantly, I don't want to.' This marks the fifth collaboration between Spike Lee and Denzel Washington—and their first in 19 years, following Inside Man in 2006. At Cannes, Lee teased that thisis probably their last film together. But at the premiere he told Summers he was 'taking that back,' underscoring a bond that's unbreakable. He also emphasized that working with Denzel again felt effortless: 'It's not like we had to catch up. We never lost a step.' We care about your data. See our privacy policy. Hi ghest 2 Lowest is Lee's modern reimagining of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 thriller High and Low , but instead of the Japanese corporate world, this version plunges into the high-stakes music industry of New York City. Washington plays David King, a legendary music mogul whose life is thrown into chaos when his driver's young son is kidnapped by mistake. Faced with a ransom demand that forces him to choose between protecting his empire or doing the right thing, King must confront his own moral compass. With jazz-tinged beats, tense moral dilemmas, and rap battles that tell a story within the story, this crime thriller is part Kurosawa homage, part love letter to New York—and all Spike Lee. The film will be released in select theaters August 15 and stream on Apple TV September 5. STAY INFORMED! CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER! 'This is really about morals and the choices people make,' Lee told Radio One's Jazmyn Summers on the carpet, nodding to the film's core message. 'All money ain't good money,' a line delivered by Washington in the film, has already become one of its defining quotes — a sharp reminder that every deal has a cost. Lee resets the story in the music industry with a distinctly New York heartbeat. Spike Lee's New York is everywhere—from framed Jalen Brunson jerseys to Yankee stadium cameo scenes, Knicks fandom, and a playful 'Boston sucks!' battle cry . It's a New York homage,—with culture, the city's grit, its unique tapestry of cultures and its vibrant music from the late Eddie Palmieri to A$AP Rocky. Adding fresh energy to the ensemble is Ice Spice, known for her chart-topping hits, who makes her screen debut under Lee's direction. One of the most talked-about scenes is a rap-battle in a basement studio—Denzel improvises lyrics inspired by Nas, delivering a powerful, unscripted performance, while A$AP Rocky stands toe-to-toe as his rival. It plays like a cinematic heavyweight fight—'blow to blow to blow. Spike Lee praised Rocky's acting chops, calling out audiences not to 'sleep on' him: Rocky went 'toe-to-toe' with Denzel and held his own. The two even throw hands – and feet– in a fast paced chase and brawl. Who wins both battles? You'll just have to see the film to find out. Cam'ron's 10 Most Petty Moments Beyoncé Wins First Emmy Award for Netflix's 'Beyoncé Bowl' A$AP Rocky said he wasn't nervous at all acting alongside Denzel—'I was born for this.' He describes it as a dream come true, though admittedly challenging, given his admiration for Washington's career. Music plays a central role—Spike Lee curated the film's soundtrack, featuring original songs by A$AP Rocky, Aiyana-Lee (who also appears in the film), and Jensen McRae. Aiyana-Lee's title track provides a soulful, hopeful tone of resilience, complemented by a lush score from Howard Drossin and a jazz-inflected EP by Fergus McCreadie's trio Pithfork. The director also paid tribute to the late Eddie Palmieri, who appears in the film, honoring his legacy in both music and culture. Highest 2 Lowest is classic Spike Lee—rich in culture, music, moral complexity, and cinematic bravado. It's both a reunion and a romp, an homage and a fresh statement. With electrifying turns from Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky and the New York spirit beating at its core, this film promises to hit hard. It forces you to ask yourself what would you do when everything is on the line. Source: Jazmyn Summers / Jazmyn Summers Article by Jazmyn Summers. Iconic metal drummer says Ozzy Osbourne's death has made just as big an impact as John Lennon's

A vaunted progressive metal drummer has compared the death of Ozzy Osbourne to the killing of legendary Beatle John Lennon in terms of cultural impact. Talking to Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk last week, Mike Portnoy of New York luminaries Dream Theater observes that the tributes to the late Black Sabbath singer, who died of a heart attack aged 76 last month, transcend the heavy metal genre. 'The impact has been huge,' the drummer tells host Eddie Trunk (via Blabbermouth). 'I don't know if I've felt a loss like this… This is as big as John Lennon or whatever.' Portnoy goes on to mention late hard rock and heavy metal icons Eddie Van Halen, Lemmy Kilmister and Ronnie James Dio, and while he says those deaths were 'massive', the response to Osbourne's 'has been a whole other level of mainstream'. 'Because he transcends metal, he transcends rock even, he transcends music,' he continues. 'He's a pop culture figure. So this has been a huge one.' Osbourne died at his Buckinghamshire home on July 22, just 17 days after he played his retirement concert, and last concert with the original Sabbath line, Back To The Beginning. The all-day extravaganza took place at Villa Park in Osbourne's hometown of Birmingham, with a who's who of rock and metal acts supporting, including Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Tool, Slayer and Anthrax. Back To The Beginning was a charity concert, with proceeds going to Acorns Children's Hospice, Birmingham Children's Hospital and Cure Parkinson's. It's been reported that the event will raise upwards of $190 million for those causes, but Osbourne's wife/manager Sharon recently disputed that figure. 'It takes a really long time [to work out the sums involved],' she told Pollstar, 'because we've had all of the bands that we had come in and their expenses, and it'll take a good six weeks to get the final number.' Talking to Trunk, Portnoy says that he revisited Sabbath's discography in the wake of Back To The Beginning, then again after Osbourne's death. 'And it's been a great, great musical trip to be revisiting all this stuff,' he says. 'It's amazing. What a career. But, yeah, what a loss.' Osbourne had a private funeral on July 30, but his procession passed down Broad Street in Birmingham and stopped at the city's Black Sabbath Bridge to let fans pay their respects. Tens of thousands of people showed up to see the cortège, with Sharon and her and Osbourne's children – Aimee, Kelly and Jack – alongside Louis, a son of Osbourne's from a previous marriage, all appearing in public for the first time since the singer died.

IndyFringe is celebrating 20 years this month. Here's a guide to the festivities

When IndyFringe launched in 2005, organizers intended for the theater festival to grow the city's economy and champion Massachusetts Avenue's creativity. In the 20 years since, the event has brought more than 217,000 people to the district to see more than 7,200 artists perform cutting-edge theater, magic, puppetry and other experimental shows. Now the festival is the state's largest performing arts experience, said Paul Daily, executive director of IF Theatre. The festival returns from Aug. 14 to 24, and it's celebrating its anniversary by paying homage to its roots. All of the show venues are within walking distance of each other in the Mass Ave area. Buskers will perform for the first time since before the pandemic, extending the festivities. The street entertainment will include hand-pan music, breakdancing and performer Sarah Beth Nelson, who will create custom blessings and curses on handmade paper for patrons, Daily said. "It creates that festival feel," he said. "Whenever you're in one of the venues, you feel like you're at a festival. And then you step out on the street, and if there's not reminders of that feel around you, it quickly disappears. So we want the whole avenue to feel like a festival the whole time." The event will continue to highlight stories by artists who are Black, Indigenous and of color with the new Flanner Fringe Lab, a collaboration between Flanner House and IF Theatre. The former promotes quality of life on the northwest side by offering educational, economic and social resources to residents. The latter runs IndyFringe and provides separate year-round programming. The lab, which was developed over the past year, began when Daily and Austin Dean Ashford, director of the Flanner House Arts Stage Academy, discussed how IndyFringe's opportunities could spread to more areas of Indianapolis. "What would happen if we took (Fringe) to other parts and helped drive the economy of other communities in the city?" Daily said. "So in that conversation, it seemed like all the pieces fit together to do everything we wanted to do." So far, 12 artists have gone through the lab and developed plays, he said. Six of the students and Ashford will appear in this year's IndyFringe. Their shows are marked in the program. Fair food recommendations: We tried 12 wild Indiana State Fair dishes and ranked them from worst to best This year's festival comprises 69 shows and 245 performances. Of the 515 artists 61% are from Indiana, 36% are national acts and 3% are international acts, according to IndyFringe's news release. Here are a few highlights below. Additionally, "Fringe-a-palooza!", which celebrates the festival's 20th anniversary, will run from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 17. Find the full schedule and showtimes at Shows will take place in the venues listed below. This year, the festival is returning to the Athenaeum's Basile Theatre and adding VisionLoft Events, where IndyFringe has built a custom stage. Find listings by venue at Tickets are $22 for adults and $16 for children, students and ages 65 and up. Some shows have a pay-what-you-can option, which has a $10 minimum and will add $2 in fees. Six-ticket flex passes are $99, and those who buy one will be given an additional flex pass to give to someone who hasn't received one before. To buy tickets, visit or call 317-210-4639.
