Vic Fangio: Good news is Jalen Carter played well and can still improve a lot
Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter has made a big impact in his first two NFL seasons, but defensive coordinator Vic Fangio thinks there's plenty of upside left for the 2023 first-round pick. Carter was a second-team All-Pro after recording 42 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles during the regular season and he had two more sacks and a forced fumble in the team's playoff win over the Rams. During a press conference this week, Fangio was asked his thoughts about what the future holds for Carter. 'The good news about Jalen is twofold,' Fangio said, via a transcript from the team. 'One, he played very well for us last year, and two, he can still improve a lot.' Carter isn't arguing with that assessment. Carter mentioned Chris Jones and Dexter Lawrence while discussing the best defensive tackles in the league and said his goal is to reach that level as well. 'This is what I wanted to do,' Carter said, via Dave Zangaro of 'I wanted to be the best at what I do, try to be the best. I'm not there yet. I still got a lot of people in front of me that's obviously been in the league a couple [more] years, got years of experience on me. But I'm just going to keep grinding every day. Not just me by myself working on specific things to get better, just being around the team having the guys support me also makes me also be one of the best in the league.' Repeating as Super Bowl champions is difficult, but it'll be a little easier if Carter can continue ascending as rapidly as he has the last two years.

How NFC Trade Helps Buccaneers' Super Bowl Hopes
How NFC Trade Helps Buccaneers' Super Bowl Hopes originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When the Philadelphia Eagles chose to trade edge rusher Bryce Huff to the San Francisco 49ers last week, the expectation was that there wouldn't be major shake-up among NFC contenders. Advertisement The reality, though, is that this move says a lot more about the NFC Playoff picture than originally perceived. And it's great news for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Let's start with the defending champs. The Eagles have struggled mightily to beat the Buccaneers over the last few years. They also have a pass rush that has now seen four players from last season all find new homes (one of them did retire). The departure of Huff won't make things easier for Philly going forward. Then there is the 49ers. After a dismal six-win finish in 2024, the team said goodbye to several starters on the defensive end. While Huff was most productive under head coach turned defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, he still has major weaknesses against the run. Advertisement That kind of weakness shows the 49ers won't be very good against the run next season. ... Especially in Saleh's wide-nine approach. Both teams are expected to be contenders alongside the Buccaneers this season. The fact that the competition may have have taken major steps backward in their run defense is great news for Tampa Bay. ... Especially with a 1,000-yard runner in Bucky Irving already on the team. Tampa's rushing attack will make things very difficult for both Philly and San Fran, And it could fundamentally shift the balance of power in the conference going forward. Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell fulfills promise to let his mom retire
Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell fulfills promise to let his mom retire Philadelphia cornerback Quinyon Mitchell was a guest on the Exciting Mics podcast and told Reed Blankenship and Cooper DeJean that he retired his mom after getting drafted by the Eagles Quinyon Mitchell completed a lot of hopes and dreams when he was selected at No. 22 overall by the Eagles in the 2024 NFL draft. Mitchell became the first cornerback selected by Philadelphia in the first round in over twenty years, while representing Toledo and the Mid-American Conference. Mitchell was a Day 1 starter for the Eagles and a finalist for the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award, won by the Rams' Jared Verse. Mitchell is one of the NFL's top young cornerbacks, but his most impressive accomplishment came after draft night and after he signed his first contract. Mitchell was a guest on the Exciting Mics podcast and told Reed Blankenship and Cooper DeJean that he retired his mom after getting drafted by Philadelphia. NIL and the Transfer Portal could have netted Quinyon Mitchell millions long before he popped up on the Eagles' radar. Mitchell stayed loyal to the University of Toledo, and when asked why at the NFL Combine, he cited the importance of loyalty to him. 'Everybody went away, Toledo stayed loyal so I stayed loyal to them.' Mitchell said. 'I stay loyal to those who stay loyal to me.' Philadelphia is big on culture and loyalty, which made it easy transition for Mitchell. Mitchell comes from a big family, the third oldest of six children (two boys, four girls), and was born and raised in Williston, a small town (population of less than 3,000) about 20 miles south of Gainesville. A three-star recruit, Mitchell was the No. 159 cornerback in the 2019 recruiting class and the No. 253 recruit in Florida. Mitchell chose Toledo over offers from Florida Atlantic, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, South Alabama, and South Florida.
