All Canucks Competing In The 2025 IIHF World Championships
The Vancouver Canucks wrapped up their 2024–25 season a little less than a month ago, but some players are already back in game-time action. Four Canucks are joining their respective country's teams at the 2025 IIHF World Championship, which will take place in Stokholm, Sweden, and Herning, Denmark. Here are the four Canucks vying against one-another for gold at this year's World Championship.

It was an embarrassment for the program, which seemed assured of winning the gold every time ever since NBA players were first allowed to participate in FIBA competition. LeBron James played on the 2004 Olympic team, and its disappointing performance has caused some to mock him — some have even nicknamed him "LeBronze" as a result. Team USA would soon revamp its program by bringing in legendary Duke University head coach Mike Krzyzewski and Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant. There were reportedly concerns about James' lack of maturity at the time, to the point where some feared he would single-handedly cause the team to not win the gold medal in the 2008 Olympics. But he said during a recent episode of his "Mind the Game" podcast that the squad's failure led to its players taking responsibility and having a sense of pride about representing the United States. "Everything is city-based here," James said. "And it took a while for us, as far as the Olympics, to get that sense of pride back. We got our [expletive] kicked in 2004, and then we lost in the World Championship in 2006. It took us time to be like, 'Oh, this is real.' "The rest of these countries not only are getting better with the game of basketball, but it's a sense of pride, too," James continued. "And when you have that sense of pride, you have a sense of work ethic that goes a lot longer. You have a sense of accountability that's a little bit longer. You have a sense of wanting to be there because you know what you're representing." With Bryant leading the way, Team USA regained the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Games, and it was a jubilant moment for the program and all of its players. In 2012, Bryant manfully took a back seat and let James become the head honcho. The result was another gold medal. Last summer, of course, after Team USA failed to medal in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant volunteered to play for Team USA in the Olympics once again. The squad won another gold medal, and James was named the MVP of the tournament for his all-around performance.

Stingers' plan to back up their Olympic silver medal
The Australian women's water polo team are looking to continue their impressive Olympic form and land their first world championship medal in six years in Singapore next month. The Stingers claimed silver at the 2024 Paris Games, falling 11-9 to Spain in the final, and hope to springboard from that to a medal at the world aquatic championships, also featuring swimming and diving, which run from July 11-24. The Australian women haven't won a world championship medal since 2019 in South Korea, when they downed Hungary to win bronze. They just missed out in Fukuoka, Japan in 2023, losing the bronze medal play-off against Italy, while they placed sixth in 2024. Water Polo Australia on Monday named a world championship squad that features 10 players who were part of the Paris campaign, expecting the team to capitalise on that Olympic experience. Almost one year on, coach Bec Rippon said it was great to have the majority of the team back together, although veteran skipper Zoe Arancini was a notable omission. "It is nice having some of the Paris group back and to now see how they connect with the newer players that have been working hard in Australia and overseas," Rippon said. "They bring with them some great experience and energy, as we approach the new Olympic cycle," she said. Currently in camp on the Gold Coast for three weeks, the Stingers next head to Perth, where they will host the USA, who are reigning world champions, and Italy for a training camp and official Test matches. "It's going to be a great opportunity to trial some new things that we've been working on, and to try things without being under the same pressure of being at a world championships," Rippon said. "We will play the Italians at the world championships, so it will be a really good chance to check in and measure up against each other before Singapore." Abbotsford Canucks Live: Game 6 win will advance Abby to Calder Cup final
The heat is on in Abbotsford. Not only was the mercury expected to climb to 30 degrees Celsius in the Fraser Valley on Sunday, and actually feel like 34, the temperature inside the Abbotsford Centre will also rise. The Abbotsford Canucks hold a 3-2 series lead over the Texas Stars in the AHL best-of-seven Western Conference final and are a victory away from advancing to the Calder Cup championship against the Charlotte Checkers. Game 6 before a raucous sold-out Abbotsford audience goes at 6 p.m., and if a seventh game is necessary, it's slated for Monday at 7 p.m. in the valley. The Canucks obviously don't want to be forced into a do-or-die showdown in Game 7 that could end their remarkable season, or shorten rest and prep time for the AHL final. The Checkers are the Florida Panthers' affiliate and swept the Laval Rocket in the Eastern Conference final. They will host first two games of the AHL title series starting Friday in North Carolina, with the west winner getting Game 3, 4 and 5 home dates, before the series reverts back to Charlotte. As for tonight, the Canucks will look for a hero. Maybe somebody snaps a tight game in the third period, or becomes the latest overtime star. Four series games have been decided by one goal and three required overtime. Stars captain Curtis McKenzie of Golden, B.C., delivered the extra-session dagger Friday in Texas in a 2-1 triumph to force Game 6. It came after winger Danila Klimovich, who had yet to see the ice in the final series, struck in double overtime Wednesday to put the Canucks up 3-1 and on verge of a series-clinching win. You'd like to think Canucks winger Linus Karlsson is going to have a say in the Game 6 outcome. He has two goals in the series by getting to the net, has been a prime playmaker, and is tied for the post-season lead with nine goals. His 17 points are third among playoff scorers and he's second in shots with 49. Maybe Arturs Silovs stretches his post-season shutout string to six. That would be fitting to equal the AHL record established by former Canucks goaltender Mika Noronen, who backstopped the Rochester Americans to the league crown in 2000. Noronen played just four NHL games for Vancouver after being acquired at the 2006 NHL trade deadline. In his first appearance, he was bombed in a 5-0 loss to the Nashville Predators. Noronen then signed in Russia as opposed to serving as backup to workhorse Roberto Luongo. An affiliate of the parent Vancouver Canucks hasn't gone to the big AHL dance since 2015. That's when the Utica Comets, guided by head coach Travis Green, parlayed a 47-20-0-9 regular-season mark into post-season series wins over the Chicago Wolves, Oklahoma City Barons and Grand Rapids Griffins. They then fell to the Manchester Monarchs, affiliated with the Los Angeles Kings, in five games of the best-of-seven championship. Those Comets were led in post-season scoring by Cal O'Reilly with 19 points (2-17) in 23 games and Sven Baetschi, who had 15 points (8-7) in 21 outings. In the regular season, 11 players struck for double digits in goals. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom was also stellar with a 22-7-2 mark, 1.88 GAA, .934 saves percentage and five shutouts.
