Ex-MLB Player Danny Serafini Found Guilty In Father-In-Law Murder Case
The Placer County District Attorney's office confirmed in a news release on Facebook that Serafini, 51, was found guilty in the fatal 2021 shooting of Robert Gary Spohr, 70, in the community of Homewood near Lake Tahoe, California.
Serafini was also convicted of shooting Spohr's 68-year-old wife, Wendy Wood, twice in the head. She survived, but died by suicide about a year later.
'The jury also found the defendant guilty of first-degree burglary and found the special circumstance allegations of lying-in-wait and felony murder, as well as related firearm allegations, to be true,' the news release read.
The verdicts follow a six-week trial that included 'testimony from dozens of witnesses and the presentation of physical evidence, including digital, cell phone, and other forensic evidence,' according to the release.
Serafini is due to be sentenced Aug. 18.
A San Francisco Bay Area native, Serafini played for the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago Cubs, among other major league teams, from 1996 to 2007, when he was suspended following a failed performance-enhancing drug test.
Following his exit from the MLB, he owned and operated The Bullpen Bar in Sparks, Nevada, with his wife, Erin Spohr. The bar ― which was featured in an episode of the reality series 'Bar Rescue' in 2015 ― has since been shuttered.
After a two-year investigation, authorities arrested Serafini along with Samantha Scott, his children's former nanny, for the attacks on Spohr and Wood in 2023. Scott, who was in a romantic relationship with Serafini at the time of the attacks, pleaded guilty to being an accessory in February.
According to Sacramento-based news station ABC 10, prosecutors found that Serafini had been in a financial dispute with his in-laws for years. Much of the tension stemmed from a $1.3 million ranch renovation project. Serafini reportedly wrote emails and text messages that read, 'I will be coming after you' and 'I'm going to kill them one day,' among other threats.
At her husband's trial, Erin Spohr testified that she did not believe Serafini had murdered her father or shot her mother, according to ESPN. She also said she and her husband had an open marriage and that she was aware of his romantic relationship with Scott.

Powerful Ecuador drug lord 'Fito' extradited to US
The powerful Ecuadorean gang leader Adolfo Macías Villamar has been extradited to the United States to face charges of drug and arms trafficking. Known as "Fito", he was recaptured in June, almost a year after he escaped from a high-security prison where he was serving a 34-year sentence for a series of crimes. He will appear in a US federal court on Monday, where he will plead not guilty to international charges of drug and weapons trafficking, his lawyer told Reuters. In June, police tracked Macías down to what they described as an underground bunker below a luxury home in the city of Manta. He was taken to La Roca, a maximum security prison. At the time, Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa praised the security forces for capturing him and said that he would be extradited to the US. The country's prison authority said he was taken out of prison in Ecuador earlier on Sunday to be handed over to US authorities. "Mr Macías and I will appear tomorrow before the Brooklyn federal court ... where he will plead not guilty," his lawyer, Alexei Schacht, told Reuters. "After, he will be held in a to-be-determined prison." Ecuadoreans voted in favor of allowing the extradition of citizens in a referendum called by President Noboa, who vowed to crack down on rising crime. Dallas Bishop Arts District crash that injured seven sparks safety concerns and causes power outage
Dallas police are investigating a crash that caused panic in the Bishop Arts District Saturday night. Four cars were involved and seven people were injured. "Cars were flipped over. It was a four-car pile-up; it's crazy," said witness Anthony Ozuna. "You see a car on top of another car, and it's one of those, like, how does that car get there?" Police said the accident happened just before 11 p.m. on North Tyler Street, right off Davis Street. Several businesses said they lost power when the car rammed into a utility pole. People who were out and about ran over to help. "All of our guests and staff jumped into action. It was probably about 100 people out here," said Jake Cruz, who works at a bar nearby. Investigators said the suspected driver crashed into a car at a stoplight, causing a chain reaction. First responders transported seven victims to the hospital in stable condition, and said the suspect was critically injured. "I mean, I think you worry about it because you have a house right here. It's a residential area right next to a busy club area," said Ozuna. Just down the street from the scene, there's a roundabout; two dangerous crashes have been reported there this year. The most recent crash was in May. Councilmember Chad West has addressed the issues at that intersection in the past and said, "This latest collision at Tyler and Davis reaffirms why the city's Public Works Department must take aggressive action to ensure pedestrians, residents and small businesses are safe. It's past time for the city to enhance traffic calming measures in this corridor and speeding enforcement." Police have not said what led up to Saturday's crash. At last check, the Public Works Department was conducting a study on the roundabout. West said it has yet to be completed.
