Man Utd target pushing for £51m transfer and 'dreaming' of Premier League

Metro5 hours ago

Manchester United have received a major boost in their pursuit of Diogo Costa, with the goalkeeper pushing to leave Porto and 'dreaming' of a Premier League move this summer.
Costa joined Porto's academy back in 2011, aged just 11, and has gone on to establish himself as a cornerstone of his boyhood side, making 197 appearances in all competitions across six seasons with the first-team.
In that time, Costa has lifted eight pieces of silverware, including two Primeira Liga titles, while also being named captain and nailing down his place as Portugal's number one ahead of next year's World Cup.
Costa's assured performances between the sticks have naturally caught the attention of some of Europe's elite clubs and speculation is mounting that the 25-year-old could be set for a big-money transfer move.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Costa believes the time has come in his career to 'embrace a new challenge' and the shot-stopper is 'expected' to move on from Porto over the coming weeks.

It's claimed both Manchester clubs are in the market for a top-class 'keeper and 'remain very interested' in Costa, who has a €75million (£64m) release clause in his contract – but could leave for a fee of €60m (£51m).
The report adds that Costa 'dreams' of playing in England and the Porto skipper has told his inner circle that he has a 'strong desire' to experience football outside of his homeland, where he feels he has 'already achieved everything'.
Costa has just two years remaining on his current deal at the Estadio do Dragao.
United have been forced to turn to the transfer market after another error-strewn campaign for Andre Onana, who has badly struggled to win over the trust of Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
City, meanwhile, are aware of lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League for Ederson and are on the lookout for a long-term replacement for the six-time Premier League winner.
Reports emanating out of Portugal back in April suggested United had identified Costa as their 'preferred' choice to succeed Onana, with scouts said to be keeping close tabs on his progress.
Costa is currently sidelined with a muscle injury, meaning he has played no part in Porto's opening Club World Cup matches against Palmeiras, Inter Miami and Al Ahly. More Trending
The Portugal international came to the attention of many fans with his showings at Euro 2024, where he wrote himself into the record books during his side's last-16 win over Sweden.
'I think Portugal's secret is Diogo Costa,' Portugal boss Roberto Martinez said after Costa became first goalkeeper in European Championship history to save three penalties in a single shootout.
'Diogo Costa is the most hidden secret in European football and today he showed up.
'Today I think he reached a completely different level. The one-on-one situation was incredible. Then he had the focus to make three consecutive saves. We have to be very proud of him.'

Liverpool boss Arne Slot's transfer message was clear in Man Utd and Leeds deals

Arne Slot's likely transfer business this summer eerily mirrors the moves he made at Feyenoord following his first season at charge as he opted to sell several starters Arne Slot's ruthlessness in the summer transfer window with Liverpool should come as no surprise, especially to Manchester United and Leeds United. The Dutchman has shot out of the gate when it comes to signings after leading the club to the Premier League title in his first season in charge. The Reds have already acquired Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia and Bayer Leverkusen duo Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, with the latter being signed for £100million plus add-ons of £16m. With Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez also nearing a move to Anfield, it's been a busy window at Liverpool thus far for arrivals as Slot looks to match that business in regards to departures. ‌ As Jarell Quansah closes in on a £35m to Leverkusen, the Reds could part ways with the likes of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliott and Andy Robertson as Slot continues building the team in his image. ‌ An overhaul of that many first team starters could be classed as being overwhelming for a head coach but Slot certainly has experience in the area, having carried out a similar strategy after his first season at Feyenoord. After finishing third in his debut campaign with the Eredivisie giants, Slot sold several of his starters including Tyrell Malacia to Man United and Luis Sinisterra to Leeds. He also sold defender Marco Senesi to Bournemouth while league top scorer Guus Till ended his loan spell before signing for rivals PSV. Despite the departure of several of his big hitters, Slot's recruitment and coaching saw Feyenoord go on to win their first league title in five years. The 46-year-old has made no qualms about only requiring the best players possible to play for Liverpool thanks to the standard set by Mohamed Salah. Speaking earlier this year, he said: "If you want to play for Liverpool, you need to be at Mo Salah level. If you're not at his level, you are almost useless to play at this club, we only need players at the top of their game. Why? Because this is one of, if not the best club in the world to play for!" Despite the significant business already completed by Liverpool, the club continue their search to strengthen further with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi and Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike reportedly liked by Anfield chiefs. ‌ The Reds' deal for Wirtz has the potential to be the biggest the Premier League has ever seen with the fee and add-ons coming out to £1m more than the £115m Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo. Speaking after the move was completed, the German superstar told the club's official website: "I feel very happy and very proud. Finally it's done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it's done and I am really happy. ‌ "I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League. "Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious. I'm not coming [to] have fun here, I want also to achieve something and give the fans what they deserve." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Chelsea keeping ‘almost impossible' training very short in hot weather

Training was restricted for the Blues the day before the match at Subaru Park which will determine whether they progress to the last 16 of the Club World Cup, with the length of the session cut short and work restricted to a shaded area of the pitch. Maresca's team need to avoid defeat against the Tunisian side or face the embarrassing prospect of falling at the first hurdle of FIFA's revamped tournament. And with conditions heavily impacting preparations the build-up to their final Group D fixture has been far from ideal. 'It is almost impossible to train or to make a session because of the weather,' said Maresca. 'Now we are trying just to save energy for the game. 'This morning's session has been very, very, very short. It's not easy in these conditions with these temperatures. We are going to try to do our best.' Maresca has said he will rotate his squad for the game with captain Reece James, who has been suffering with illness, one of the players likely to sit out, whilst defender Levi Colwill has also been unwell. Nicolas Jackson will serve a one-match ban after his red card for a studs-up tackle during the 3-1 defeat to Brazilian side Flamengo. Asked about the tournament towards the end of the Premier League season, the Italian said that players would not play if they were feeling fatigued in the US. Chelsea are on three points after their first two matches, following up a 2-0 victory over Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC with the defeat by Flamengo. 'I always try to avoid excuses,' said Maresca. 'I always try to be honest. It's not about excuses, it's about reality. 'It's an excuse when it's not hot and we say that it's hot. That is an excuse. But if hot, it's hot. It's difficult to work with these temperatures but we are here and we trying to do our best and we will try to win. 'Now in terms of the session, it's impossible to do a normal session, otherwise you don't save energy for the game. 'We did the session this morning, it was quite short, we prepared for the game and we will try to do our best to go to the next stage.'

Rangers gain ‘global gravitas' from US partnership – 49ers chief Paraag Marathe

The Ibrox club were earlier this month taken over by an American consortium spearheaded by private healthcare businessman Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, the investment arm of the San Francisco-based NFL franchise. Marathe, who is also the Leeds chairman, has been involved with the 49ers for more than two decades and, having become Gers vice-chairman, the American is excited about the opportunities beckoning for the Glasgow club as they embark on their much-hyped new era. 'I think it is pretty objectively true that the San Francisco 49ers are one of the biggest sports brands in the world, and certainly one of the most recognisable,' said Marathe, facing the Scottish media for the first time. Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh (left) and Marathe shake hands in front of the tunnel at Ibrox (Andrew Milligan/PA) 'Rangers is a gem of European football, and what the 49ers can bring is a certain global gravitas and awareness to Rangers. 'Now, take the States or other places where the 49ers are top of mind, now all of a sudden Rangers are in that same sentence. Why does that matter? It matters when we are out with commercial partners who care about how many times they are going to be mentioned, how many times their name will come up. That has monetary value. 'It has helped us with Leeds. In terms of one not being subordinate to the other, selfishly speaking, it actually helps the 49ers too, bringing it more into the conversation globally and bringing that awareness. 'I know from my experience at Leeds and I am already seeing some of the early returns, it matters to players that we are out recruiting. 'Oh, wait a second, the 49ers are involved in this'. This must mean that there is a certain extra gravitas that comes to it that helps us in the recruitment of players.' Marathe dismissed any notion that Rangers may play second fiddle to newly-promoted Premier League side Leeds in the eyes of Marathe or the 49ers. 'I will do whatever I need to do to keep me on the winning side of the ledger at any club,' he said. 'That is all I care about. 'It would be a disservice to Leeds and Rangers to consider one a feeder club to the other. Consider them both closed-loop universes that deserve proper attention and nurture and care – we will designate and assign resources appropriately. 'But it's obvious that there are opportunities to learn from each other, whether it's commercially or competitively on the pitch. 'In my mind it's a real positive to have two clubs like that, but there's not one that is subordinate to the other. That would be a disservice.' Rangers Chairman Andrew Cavenagh and Vice Chairman Paraag Marathe both spoke to RangersTV after all resolutions were passed at today's EGM. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 23, 2025 Marathe also allayed any concerns that Rangers and Leeds qualifying for the same European competition might cause similar problems to those encountered by Crystal Palace, whose Europa League spot was in doubt before American owner John Textor – also a shareholder in French side Lyon – sold his stake in the London club. 'We have checked the box with those that we need to to make sure that if and when there was ever even a situation where there was even the perception of a conflict, we would solve that,' Marathe said. 'That has already been solved, so we are good there.'
