Nagelsmann: Ter Stegen to be Germany's number one in Nations league
Germany national coach Julian Nagelsmann takes part in a press conference, ahead of the UEFA Nations League semifinal soccer match against Portugal. Federico Gambarini/dpa Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said that Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be the starting goalkeeper in the Nations League Final Four on June 4-8. "Marc will be the number one, I've emphasized that many times. I'm very confident he'll play two top games," Nagelsmann said in a news conference on Friday. Advertisement Ter Stegen returned to the team after recovering from a serious knee injury, but it's unclear whether he will take the position between the posts. The Barcelona keeper was set to become Germany's number one after Manuel Neuer retired from the national team after last summer's Euro 2024. But the knee injury suffered in September opened the door for Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel. Baumann started both matches against Italy in March. On Wednesday, Germany face 2018-19 Nations League champions Portugal in the semi-finals at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The winner will face either 2020-21 champions France or title holders Spain. Advertisement "The Spanish team has realized how important the Nations League can be. It can be a mini-European championship," Nagelsman said about Spain, who won the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. The coach stressed that his goal is to win the Nations League title in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup. "Of course we want to win both games (semi-finals and final), we'd love to win the title. We want to boost our confidence. We want to get to the point where we can win titles – even if it's a small one," he said. Rüdiger in 'opportunityphase' after outburst Nagelsmann said that Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger knows that "the limit was reached" with his outburst during the Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona last month. Advertisement "He knows my opinion, that it's not good and that the limit was reached. He also knows that this can't happen again, otherwise there will be major consequences. We are very transparent," Nagelsmann said. Rüdiger was sent off for throwing an object at the referee and angrily reacting to a foul given against team-mate Kylian Mbappe shortly before the final whistle. Barcelona won the match 3-2. Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea said in his report that Rüdiger was dismissed for "throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me." The defender reportedly threw an ice cube at the official. Rüdiger has apologized for the incident. "At some point we have to accept the apology. He's in the opportunity phase now. That's over for me, too. I look forward to better behaviour in the future," Nagelsmann added.

It is hard – Sarina Wiegman emotional after Mary Earps retires
England boss Sarina Wiegman is 'really disappointed' not to have Mary Earps for the European Championship this summer after the goalkeeper's shock retirement. The 32-year-old has been Wiegman's number one choice in goal for previous tournaments, with England winning Euro 2022 and then reaching the final of the 2023 World Cup, where Earps won the Golden Glove. Earps announced her international retirement on Tuesday and will no longer be available for the upcoming Euros. Wiegman said: 'I'm really disappointed she is not part of the team because I want her part of the team. It must have been a really hard decision for her and so it is (for) us. 'I had some conversations with her that I don't want to share here because it is between us. It is hard. It's hard for her at the same time. 'She has done such a great job for England, she has made a massive difference and had an incredible journey so far and I really cherish that. So that's also where the disappointment comes from too. 'It's emotional because you also have a relationship, we've had such a massive journey together with lots of highs and lows too and that's what makes it really hard but we have to move on. 'We don't have time to celebrate that because we have to move forward. We have a game tomorrow, going into the Euros and then after that we can think about those things.' Lionesses captain Leah Williamson won the Champions League with Arsenal on Saturday but had a quick turnaround with the England camp this week and found out about the news as Earps said goodbye at St George's Park on Tuesday. Earps and Williamson have been two of the leading faces for women's football in recent years and the latter said she will always support her friend with any decision she makes. Williamson said: 'I hope she describes me in the same way but she is one of my closest friends in football in terms of what we have been through together and the journey we've been on. 'I'm devastated because I love her and love being her team-mate. The way she wears an England shirt is an example. If she thinks this is the best thing, I'll support her always. 'I will always try and change her mind because I want her as my team-mate. I have to respect her, but she knows I didn't want her to leave.' Defender Millie Bright pulled out of the England camp for Nations League matches against Portugal and Spain to prioritise her physical and mental health following a tough and long season. The 31-year-old has the full support of both her captain and head coach. Wiegman said: 'She has to take care of herself, we are in conversations. We will stay in contact and I hope she feels better soon, but I don't know that yet at the moment.' Williamson added: 'For anyone to speak out about mental health is a brave thing to do. It encourages other people to do the same so she is leading by example there. 'I've personally given Millie a bit of space. Naturally, any support she needs from the team we will be there to give it to her.'

Bayern Munich signs Jonathan Tah from Bundesliga rival Bayer Leverkusen
Bayern Munich strengthened its defense ahead of the Club World Cup by signing Germany center back Jonathan Tah from its Bundesliga rival Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday. Bayern had been pursuing Tah for more than a year after failing to sign him last summer, when Tah refused to extend his contract beyond the 2024-25 season. He was Leverkusen's longest-serving outfield player after spending a decade at the club and was a key part of the team which won the Bundesliga and German Cup unbeaten in 2023-24. How Leverkusen replaces Tah is a key question in the rebuild the club must pursue with new coach Erik ten Hag after Xabi Alonso left for Real Madrid. Bayern had been expected for months to sign Tah as a free agent but the Club World Cup complicates matters. The German champion has three group games before Tah's Leverkusen contract was due to expire June 30, starting with Auckland City in Cincinnati on June 15. That meant Leverkusen had the right to demand a fee if Bayern wanted to sign Tah earlier, in the extra transfer window running June 1-10. Getting Tah sooner is important for Bayern because its first-choice central defense pairing has faced a demanding schedule this season and struggled with injuries. Dayot Upamecano hasn been out since a knee injury in March, while Kim Min-jae played much of the season with an Achilles tendon problem. Backup central defender Eric Dier is leaving for Monaco, while injuries limited Hiroki Ito to a handful of games this season. Tah was an up-and-coming talent when he joined Leverkusen from Hamburger SV in 2015 but it still took years for him to establish himself as one of Germany's best. After making his international debut at the age of 20 in a friendly against England in 2016, Tah had to wait until Julian Nagelsmann's arrival as coach in 2023 to become a regular starter for his country. Germany's run to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 on home soil was Tah's first major tournament. Of his 35 international appearances, 19 have come in the last two seasons.
