New beach cricket tournament coming to Appley
An Isle of Wight beach is gearing up to host a new cricket tournament.
Featuring both men's and women's teams, the Isle of Wight Cricket Board's inaugural event will take place on Appley Beach on May 27.
Eight teams, including one from the mainland, will compete in the tournament, which is open to players aged 16 and above.
The matches will be played on an artificial surface covered by a layer of sand, allowing for a more traditional cricket experience.
The wicket will be designed to let the ball bounce, while the rest of the playing area will be on soft sand.

The men's tournament will start at 3.30pm and will feature teams from Porchfield CC, the Whizzers Surfers, the Winchester Bears, and Arreton CC.
The men's final is set to take place at 6.45pm.
Both tournaments will follow a round-robin format, allowing each team to play against every other team.
Spectators are encouraged to attend and enjoy the lively atmosphere, complete with a BBQ and a children's cricket activity area.
Cricket enjoys great popularity on the Island, with 19 clubs offering various competitive and friendly formats.

The sport also caters to hardball and softball disability cricket, as well as table cricket.
The English Cricket Board provides significant funding to help young Islanders engage with the sport.
Alex Barton, from the board, said: 'We are so excited to be bringing this fun and inclusive cricket format to Appley Beach during half term week.
'The Isle of Wight Cricket Board invites everyone to come down and spectate, enjoy the BBQ and find out more about this ever-popular sport.'

David Beckham Is Set to Receive a Knighthood
Arise, Sir David Beckham! The former England captain, who was previously awarded an OBE back in 2003, is set to receive a knighthood as part of the King's Birthday Honors list, in recognition of his contributions to soccer and British society. Beckham has undoubtedly had an illustrious career to date, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and one Champions League title with Manchester United, along with one Spanish league title and one French league title at Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain respectively. The sportsman is also a Unicef ambassador and played a key role bringing the 2012 Olympics to London. Both David and Victoria Beckham—who was awarded an OBE for her services to the fashion industry in 2017 and will now become a Lady—have attended numerous royal events over the years, including a state banquet for the Emir of Qatar in December 2024 and a dinner at Highgrove House to celebrate the UK's relationship with Italy in February. They were also both in attendance at the Prince and Princess of Wales's wedding in 2011, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wedding in 2018. The King's honors are designed to recognize 'people from all walks of life, in public recognition of their merit, service, or bravery.' These are announced twice a year, on New Year's Day and the King's birthday on June 14. Others set to be recognised include actor Gary Oldman, who will also receive a knighthood; television presenter Claudia Winkleman, who will be made an MBE; former tennis player Virginia Wade, who will be made an OBE; and actor Adjoa Andoh, who will be made an MBE.

LONDON — Aiden Markram has been dropped twice by South Africa in his test career. It's his own fault. Markram set such a superlative standard out of the gate — three centuries and two 90s in his first six months — that when the runs stopped raining, he was labelled a flash in the pan.
