Svitolina hits out at online abuse
Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has made abuse on social media public and hit out at the haters. World number 13 Svitolina shared a number of abusive posts in her Instagram story on Wednesday, after a quarter-final defeat against Naomi Osaka in Montreal the previous day. Messages included 'kill yourself', 'I wish you die tonight', were related to Russia's invasion of her home country, and to betting. 'To all bettors: I'm a mom before I'm an athlete. The way you talk to women - to mothers - is SHAMEFUL. If your mums saw your messages, they would be disgusted,' she said. Svitolina, 30, is married to French player Gael Monfils, and they have a little daughter. Svitolina is among many tennis players to be the target of online abuse. German players Eva Lys and Tamara Korpatsch had recently exposed hate comments, with Korpatsch after a defeat singling out people who had bet on her. The women's body WTA has started offering players a technological solution which filters abusive posts and comments with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI). (DPA)

Raducanu adds Nadal's former coach Roig to team full-time
PA Media/DPA London Emma Raducanu has added Rafael Nadal's former coach Francis Roig to her team on a full-time basis ahead of this month's US Open, the PA news agency understands. The 2021 winner at Flushing Meadows has worked with British coach Mark Petchey on an informal basis since March and enjoyed a positive run of results. However, Petchey's TV commitments meant he was always unable to become Raducanu's full-time coach and after a trial with Roig following Wimbledon, the 22-year-old will begin work with him in Cincinnati this week after he agreed a contract until the end of 2025. Raducanu has struggled to settle with a coach in recent years until her part-time work with Petchey started to pay dividends earlier this season. A WTA 1000 quarter-final showing at the Miami Open in March was followed by a round-of-16 run at the Italian Open before she made the last eight in the first women's tournament at Queen's Club. Aryna Sabalenka proved too strong for Raducanu in round three at Wimbledon, but this was backed up by a semi-final at the Citi Open as the British number one targets being seeded at the US Open later this month. TV commentator Petchey, who worked with Andy Murray at the start of his career, revealed in July that Raducanu would need to find a full-time coach soon and she has in Roig. Spanish coach Roig worked with Nadal alongside Nadal's uncle Toni for the majority of the 22-time grand slam champion's career and more recently was part of Matteo Berrettini's backroom staff. Raducanu will stay close to Petchey, PA understands, but turns her focus back to rising up the WTA rankings with a strong display at the Cincinnati Open over the next fortnight. Djokovic drops out of Cincinnati after skipping Toronto Novak Djokovic has opted not to play the Cincinnati Masters after he already failed to make an appearance in Toronto, organizers confirmed on Monday following a report by The Athletic. This means Djokovic will have not played a professional match in more than a month when he starts another bid for a 25th Grand Slam title at the US Open later in August. The 38-year-old Serbian last played at Wimbledon on July 11 where he was defeated by eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. Italy's Sinner, 23 and current world number 1, and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, 22, are set to play in the Cincinnati Masters 1,000 after they also skipped Toronto, with main draw play due to begin on August 7.

Tauson takes revenge on Swiatek at Montreal Open
Agencies Montreal World number three Iga Swiatek suffered a surprise defeat at the National Bank Open as she was beaten by Clara Tauson in Montreal. Denmark's Tauson gained revenge for her Wimbledon defeat at the hands of Swiatek to reach the last eight with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory. Poland's Swiatek won a solitary point in the first-set tiebreak - that came from a Tauson double fault - and was then broken early in the second set. Swiatek broke back to make it 4-3 but failed to hold in her next service gamebas Tauson progressed to set up a quarter-final against Madison Keys. In a tight opening set, Tauson led nearly throughout. But after losing leads of 3-1 and 4-2 -- and failing to serve out the set at 5-4 -- she found a spark again in the tiebreak. The only point she lost in the first-set tiebreak was off of a double fault. In the second set, the Dane again raced out to an early lead, and regrouped when Swiatek hit back. After the Pole got the set back on serve, Tauson won eight of the last 11 points. 'I just felt like after I won the first set that I needed to continue, because I know she's never going to give up, and she's going to come out firing no matter what,' Tauson said afterwards. 'I think obviously getting a win against her after losing to her in Wimbledon and a couple of weeks ago is obviously nice, because I was not feeling great in that match, and I felt like I was playing some good tennis in Wimbledon. 'So I felt like if I could keep that going, I thought I had a shot.' Meanwhile, No. 6 seed Keys pulled off an escape from two match points down to defeat No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova, advancing to her eighth quarter-final of the season. Keys staved off both match points serving down 5-4 in the second set, ultimately taking the last three games of the match to win for the second time in as many meetings with Muchova. Keys advances to her second quarterfinal in Montreal, following her run to the 2016 final. Since then, she had not gone past the third round in Canada until this year.
