Dwarka Expressway to get India's first AI-based traffic system that can detect 14 types of traffic violations

Time of India8 hours ago

India has launched an AI traffic system on Delhi's Dwarka Expressway. The system aims to enhance safety and enforce traffic laws. It uses cameras and sensors for real-time monitoring. Violations are sent to enforcement agencies. Toll rates may decrease on roads with flyovers. This change could lower costs for commercial vehicles. The government is working towards smarter, safer highways.

In a first, India has introduced an artificial intelligence-powered Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) on Delhi's Dwarka Expressway . The system, developed by the Indian Highways Management Company Ltd ( IHMCL ) and implemented under the supervision of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), aims to improve highway safety and law enforcement. The project also covers a 28-kilometre stretch of NH-48 from Shiv Murti to Kherki Daula , forming a 56.46-kilometre digital traffic management corridor, a TOI report stated. The ATMS includes high-resolution PTZ cameras, video incident detection systems (VIDES), vehicle-actuated speed displays, variable message signboards, and a central control room. This room is connected to local and national emergency response services, enabling quicker responses to incidents on the road.According to Amrit Singha, Chief Product Officer at IHMCL, 'These are all challanable incidents as per the Motor Vehicle Act.' He said the system can detect up to 14 types of traffic violations such as speeding, triple riding, and not wearing seatbelts. The violations are sent directly to enforcement agencies through the NIC e-Challan portal. In a statement, NHAI said, 'The Command Centre acts as the digital brain of the corridor, enabling quick deployment of emergency units during accidents, fog conditions, road obstructions, or animal intrusion.'In a parallel development, the Ministry of Road Transport has approved a change in toll pricing for road stretches where over 50% of the route includes structures like flyovers, underpasses, and tunnels. These sections will now be tolled at five times the base rate, down from the existing ten times. The decision is expected to be notified in the coming days.At present, a car trip on the 28.5-kilometre Dwarka Expressway costs about Rs 317. Of this route, 21 kilometres are elevated. Once the new rates come into force, the cost is likely to drop to around Rs 153.While private car users may see limited benefit due to the government's upcoming annual toll pass scheme, the revised toll rates are expected to reduce operational costs for commercial and heavy vehicle operators using such corridors regularly. With the rollout of the ATMS and the change in toll rules, the government is pushing towards a more intelligent highway system. The moves are expected to improve road safety, reduce traffic violations, and offer better value to commuters and transporters using high-infrastructure expressways.(With inputs from TOI)

Early property tax rebate: Date extended till July 31

New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) extended the deadline for the 10% early property tax filing rebate until July 31. Property owners can now receive the 10% rebate by making their tax payments before the new deadline. Previously, the deadline was June 30. The extension was granted following a standing committee meeting, where concerns were raised about technical issues affecting the corporation's property tax portal, which prevented many users from accessing the system. The announcement was made by standing committee Chairperson, Satya Sharma. Besides the 10% rebate for advance payment of taxes, other rebates given to senior citizens, women, etc., will also continue until July 31. The civic body earlier claimed to intensify camps with RWAs and take other measures to increase tax collection. MCD established a property tax collection target of Rs 4,000 crore for 2025-26. There are approximately 13 lakh taxpayers, and the civic body is also taking measures to bring more taxpayers under the tax net. State ties up with 2 IITs for safety checks on 85 bridges

Patna: The state road construction department (RCD) has roped in IIT Delhi and IIT Patna to audit 85 major bridges under its newly launched Bihar State Bridge Maintenance Policy 2025, the department's minister Nitin Nabin said here on Friday. The minister said the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation Limited (BSBCCL) has signed an agreement with IIT Patna and IIT Delhi for the structural audit of bridges and the development of the Bridge Information and Management System (BIMS). "Through this partnership, we will be able to work together on important tasks such as assessing the condition of bridges, identifying critical deficiencies in bridge structures, and developing targeted maintenance and repair strategies," he said. Nabin added that conducting structural safety audits is essential for the regular use of constructed bridge structures. "This will help identify issues within the bridges, allowing for repairs to be carried out accordingly. Timely repairs and audits will prevent future bridge accidents, providing the public with a safe travel experience," he said. "Bihar has a total of 3,968 bridges, of which 532 are classified as large. In the first phase, safety audits will be conducted on 85 of the large bridges. This work is being carried out through BSBCCL. The audit process will reveal the actual condition of the bridges in the state, allowing them to be repaired and made fully operational. IIT Patna and IIT Delhi will provide health reports for 85 bridges within a year," a communique issued by the department said. "IIT Patna has been assigned the task of auditing 45 bridges with an LOA issued on 04.06.2025, and a sanctioned amount of Rs 8.72 crore. IIT Delhi has been assigned the safety audit of 40 bridges with an LOA issued on 04.06.2025 and an approved amount of Rs 7.88 crore," the communique said.
