
Can You Smoke Magic Mushrooms?
Dried shrooms can be crushed into a powder and smoked in a joint. Some people also put purified psilocybin crystals into pipes. But neither of these options is a great idea.
It's hard to say for sure what happens when you smoke shrooms. There's not really any research on the subject, so the only reports out there are from people who've blazed up and shared their experience on forums like Reddit.
A handful of shroom smokers say it produces a mild high, but nothing close to a trip like you'd get from popping a handful of caps or drinking a tea preparation.
Most others, however, report it as a total waste of time with no effects, apart from some nausea.
The absence of any psychological effects could come down to temperature. Psilocybin breaks down at high temperatures, so lighting up shrooms basically kills the main ingredient responsible for the trippy effects.
Is it dangerous to smoke shrooms?
There are several risks to consider when it comes to smoking shrooms. Then, there are the general risks associated with taking shrooms.
General smoking risks
For one, any type of smoke is bad for your health. All smoke contains harmful toxins and particulates that can damage lung tissue and blood vessels, and increase the risk of lung cancer.
If you smoke shrooms mixed with tobacco, you tack on all the risks associated with that, too.
Mold spores
Smoking shrooms also carries extra risk for your lungs by way of mold spores. Inhaling certain types of mold increases your risk of lung inflammation and infections.
Inhaling certain mold species can have serious health consequences if you have a mold allergy, a preexisting lung condition, or a weakened immune system.
Bad trips
If you do happen to experience any of the psychoactive effects of psilocybin after smoking, keep in mind that bad trips are a possibility when you do shrooms.
A bad trip can include disturbing or downright frightening hallucinations, panic, and trouble distinguishing between fantasy and reality.
Physical side effects
Shrooms can cause some unpleasant physical effects, too, including:
increased heart rate and blood pressure
nausea and vomiting
increased body temperature
abdominal cramps and diarrhea
muscle weakness
uncoordinated movement
Psychological side effects
When taken in higher doses, shrooms and other hallucinogens alter your perception of reality, which may lead you to do things you wouldn't normally do.
While you're unlikely to have much of a trip from smoking shrooms, it's still a possibility to be prepared for.
Are there other ways to consume shrooms?
Mushrooms are mostly ingested orally, either dry or fresh. Some people eat them as-is, while others add them to other foods. They're also often steeped in boiling water or tea.
Some people get fancy with their fungi and dip them in chocolate or add them to soups, smoothies, or milkshakes.
Though not as common, some people grind dried shrooms into powder and snort them. Based on first-hand reports online, this isn't recommended.
What can you do to reduce your risk of unwanted effects?
There's no such thing as completely safe substance use (or smoking, for that matter), but there are some things you can do to reduce certain risks.
If you're going to take shrooms, consider these tips:
Choose a different method: Seriously, smoking's generally not the way to go, especially when it comes to shrooms. You probably won't feel anything. Plus, you could end up inhaling harmful spores.
Mind your dose: You should start with the lowest dose possible before gradually working your way up. Hallucinogens can be unpredictable, and higher doses increase the chances of a bad trip and adverse effects.
Don't hold your inhale: Inhaling deeply and holding the inhale exposes your lungs to toxins for longer periods. If you're going to smoke shrooms, exhale right away.
Have a trip-sitter: You should have at least one sober and trustworthy person who can step up if you trip out and need help.
Pick the right time: Your mood plays a role in your experience when it comes to psychedelics. No matter how you do shrooms, make sure you do them only when you're in a positive head space.
Pick the right place: Somewhere safe and familiar is the way to go. It'll help you relax and keep you safe should you hallucinate or get anxious.
Stay hydrated: Shrooms can raise your body temperature and dry out your mouth. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your trip. It may also help with the comedown.
Eat something: Shrooms tend to cause some gastrointestinal discomfort, especially when you eat them. You can reduce your chances of this happening by eating something first.
Don't mix: Mixing substances is generally a bad idea because it makes the effects even more unpredictable. This goes for alcohol, too.

Chicago woman lives and thrives a year after complex heart and liver transplant
Climbing the stairs to the top of the former John Hancock Center is a feat unto itself, but Laura Valentine did it just months after undergoing a very complicated double organ transplant. Earlier this month, Valentine marked the one-year anniversary of her surgery — a major milestone. "You feel looser," said Valentine. "You feel freer when you get to that year mark." Valentine's medical problems started at birth. "There's a lot of technical terms, but the best way to describe it is that I had half a heart when I was born," Valentine said. Valentine was born with only one ventricle, or lower chamber in her heart. This made it harder for her heart to pump oxygenated blood throughout her body, and because of this, she turned blue shortly after she was born, according to UChicago Medicine. Valentine had her first open-heart surgery when she was under 2 years old. She was able to experience a relatively normal childhood as a result — swimming, riding horses, attending college and graduate school as an education professional, and becoming a mom, UChicago Medicine noted. But the congenital heart condition was not the only condition with which Valentine was born. She also had a rare genetic condition that caused her organs' positions to be reversed—her heart and her liver are "I'm a mirror image of you. So if we were to hug, our hearts would essentially be touching," said Valentine. "So my heart's on [my right] side, and then my liver's on [my left] side." In July 2023, Valentine noticed some troubling new symptoms. First, doctors found she had been suffering from silent atrial fibrillation — an irregular heartbeat with no symptoms that had caused blood clots in multiple organs, UChicago Medicine said. Medications and procedures eliminated any immediate danger, but the problems with her heart had also caused her liver to fail. "The biopsy came back cirrhosis, and my heart was failing. It was bad news," Valentine said. "So by December '23, I knew I needed new organs." While awaiting the new organs, Valentine walked four miles every day through the halls of the hospital for "prehabilitation." And then in June of last year, she got the new organs transplanted. "She was born with a heart that only one ventricle as opposed to two, and was pointed in the wrong direction in the wrong place," said Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam, director of the Heart and Vascular Center at UChicago Medicine. "Other than that, it was perfectly fine." Dr. Jeevanandam did Valentine's heart transplant. Jeevanandam — along with Dr. Michael Earing, chief of the Section of Pediatric Cardiology at UChicago Medicine, pediatric cardiologist Dr. Stephen Pophal, and director of liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation Dr. Rolf Barth — used a 3D model to design new connections for Valentine's organs and figure out where to put her new heart and liver. "So we basically made it so we could fit a heart… by moving all these vessels from the left side to the right side," he said. The surgery took about 20 hours. It was complicated, but went as planned. Now a year later, Valentine's outlook has changed. "Once you pass out a year, and if you've not had any major complications — your kidneys are working, everything else is working — then at that point, we're now looking for decades of life, not just years of life," said Jeevanandam. "She is really, really special. I mean, she has willed herself for so long, despite how sick she was. She willed her through the surgery, and now she's willing herself to a fantastic life." At a holiday party less than six months after the surgery, Jeevanandam urged Valentine to join the annual Hustle Chicago, in which participants climb 1,632 stairs up the former John Hancock Center to raise funds for lung disease. Valentine made the climb two months later with her fiancé, with Celine Dion in her earbuds to inspire her. Meanwhile, Valentine is also now passionate about organ donation, and wants to encourage more people to participate.

Republican congresswoman's office evacuated after pro-abortion activists send chilling threats
North Central Florida U.S. Rep. Kat Cammack shared on social media Wednesday night that her office was evacuated following death threats against her, her family and her staff. The Congresswoman alleges she has been a repeat victim of the threats following an exclusive with the Wall Street Journal in which she spoke about an expelled pregnancy in May of last year, according to a post on social media platform X. "These threats erupted after the Wall Street Journal reported on my life-threatening ectopic pregnancy—a nonviable pregnancy with no heartbeat. Since then, we've recieved thousands of hate-filled messages and dozens of credible threats from pro-abortion activists, which law enforcement is actively investigating," Rep. Cammack's Press Office posted. Her interview with WSJ occurred shortly after the state's abortion law went into effect and could be a possible contributor due to rumors circulating around reports that Cammack voted for Florida's heartbeat law, something she claims is not true. "To those spreading misinformation: I did not vote for Florida's heartbeat law; I serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, not the Florida Legislature," she claimed. "Let me be clear: I will not be intimidated. I won't back down in the fight for women and families. Ensuring women have the resources and care they deserve is critical. We need real conversations about maternal healthcare in America—conversations based on truth, not fear." In her post, Cammack included photos displaying the types of harassment she has received. The congresswoman said during the WSJ interview that she had an ectopic pregnancy and that after speaking with medical professionals she had initially refused to terminate her pregnancy. She says she had fears that she would be violating state law due to the fact she was five weeks along at the time of the termination. Although the nature of her condition was considered fatal, she was still afraid, she said, and blames pro-choice messaging. "It was absolute fearmongering at its worst," she told the publication. "There will be some comments like, 'Well, thank God we have abortion services,' even though what I went through wasn't an abortion." Fox News Digital has reached out to Congresswoman Cammack's office for comment but they have not immediately responded.
