Gerik bus tragedy: Six UPSI students killed in crash identified
IPOH, June 9 — Six of the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students killed in a crash at KM53 of the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding in Gerik early this morning have been identified.
In a statement, UPSI's Corporate Communications Division identified four of the dead as Sufea Adela Maslihaizan, 21, from Kampung Air Terjun, Jertih; Mohammad Aqil Taqiudin, 21, from Kampung Gong Bayor, Besut; Anis Soffiyya Md Zaidi, 20, from Kampung Rahmat, Chalok, Setiu; and Nur Ainul Qistina Mat Ali, 21, from Lorong Tapah, Kampung Anak Ikan, Jertih.
Post-mortems for these four victims have been completed at the Forensics Department of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) here.
The other two victims, whose post-mortems were conducted at Hospital Gerik, were identified as Muhammad Adib Hazim Halim, 21, from Kampung Pasir Badak, Jertih; and Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad, 22, from Jalan Gong Maksom, Kampung Amir, Besut.
The students were travelling in a chartered bus from Jerteh, Terengganu, to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, when it collided with a multi-purpose vehicle at 1.10am. — Bernama

Survivor still hears cries for help, lost two close friends
KUALA LUMPUR: One of the survivors of the bus crash that killed 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students four days ago said that he could still hear his peers' cries for help on that fateful night. Recalling the harrowing moment, 21-year-old Tuan Muhammad Adham Tuan Adnan said he was seated on the right side of the third row from the back, with his three close friends a few seats away. 'I was sleeping, so I'm not sure whether the bus was speeding or not. Just before it overturned, I woke up...I heard loud noises, and the next thing I knew, I was already in a ditch,' he said when contacted by Bernama Radio today. Tuan Muhammad Adham, who is pursuing a degree in Education (Malay Language), said that with what little strength he had left and with the help of other survivors, he managed to climb out of the ditch. 'I finally saw (the gravity of) the were bodies in front of me, people were screaming for help, and some were still trapped inside the bus,' he added. Tuan Muhammad Adham, who sustained a fractured upper arm, is receiving treatment at Taiping Hospital in Perak. He said two of his close friends lost their lives that night, and another friend sustained injuries on his shoulders. On Monday, the chartered bus en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle along the East Coast Highway in Gerik. Thirty-three people were also injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.

Gerik bus crash: Driver arrested after hospital discharge
IPOH: Police have arrested the driver of the bus involved in the crash which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik on Monday. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 39-year-old was arrested about 5.45pm after being discharged from Taiping Hospital. He said the man would be taken to the Gerik police headquarters to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. "We are currently awaiting further instructions from the state prosecution director on whether the bus driver can be charged in court tomorrow. "As far as the police are concerned, we are ready," he said when contacted. It is learnt that the man was accompanied by three policemen, believed to be from the Gerik police headquarters, when they left the hospital's compound. It was earlier reported that the bus driver was among those injured. Noor Hisam had said the driver sustained injuries to his hand. On Monday, the bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at Km53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik. Thirteen died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The driver, his attendant, the other UPSI students and the family of four in the Alza all sustained injuries of varying degrees.
