Gerik Crash: Survivor still hears cries for help, lost two close friends
KUALA LUMPUR: One of the survivors of the bus crash that killed 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students four days ago said that he could still hear his peers' cries for help on that fateful night.
Recalling the harrowing moment, 21-year-old Tuan Muhammad Adham Tuan Adnan said he was seated on the right side of the third row from the back, with his three close friends a few seats away.
'I was sleeping, so I'm not sure whether the bus was speeding or not. Just before it overturned, I woke up...I heard loud noises, and the next thing I knew, I was already in a ditch,' he said when contacted by Bernama Radio today.
Tuan Muhammad Adham, who is pursuing a degree in Education (Malay Language), said that with what little strength he had left and with the help of other survivors, he managed to climb out of the ditch.
'I finally saw (the gravity of) the situation...there were bodies in front of me, people were screaming for help, and some were still trapped inside the bus,' he added.
Tuan Muhammad Adham, who sustained a fractured upper arm, is receiving treatment at Taiping Hospital in Perak.
He said two of his close friends lost their lives that night, and another friend sustained injuries on his shoulders.
On Monday, the chartered bus en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle along the East Coast Highway in Gerik.
Thirty-three people were also injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.

The ministry said the action was taken under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 after receiving a report on the tragedy. 'The ministry will work with the police, the Land Public Transport Agency and the road transport department to complete the investigation in accordance with the provisions of the law so that appropriate punishment is imposed, and the victims' families receive the appropriate protection,' it said in a statement today. It said further action will be taken once the investigation is concluded. The ministry's officials have also visited the families of the victims and those of the injured, it said, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring tourism-related activities are conducted safely, ethically, and responsibly. In the incident on June 9, a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu, to the main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after being involved in a collision with a car. Thirty-three people, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the car were injured.

GERIK, June 13 — Mohd Amirul Fadhil who was behind the wheel of the chartered bus that crashed on the East-West Highway, was today charged with dangerous driving, after 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on board died on June 9. The 39-year-old was charged with 15 counts under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries up to 10 years' jail and a RM50,000 fine upon conviction. 'I understand. I plead not guilty,' he was quoted as saying in the Magistrate's Court here by Sinar Harian after the charges were read out. He also claimed trial to a separate charge of reckless driving under Section 42(1), which carries up to five years' jail, a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000, and a minimum five-year licence suspension. The crash occurred at about 1am last Monday, while the bus was ferrying 42 students from Jertih, Terengganu to UPSI's main campus. Thirteen students died at the scene, while two more died in hospital. Bus driver in fatal UPSI crash charged with dangerous driving

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The bus driver involved in the accident which killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students was charged today with causing their deaths by driving dangerously. Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle, 39, pleaded not guilty to the 15 charges read to him before magistrate Firdaus Nor Azlan at the Gerik magistrates' court, reported Berita Harian. He was accused of committing the offences at Km53 of the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, at about 1.15am on June 9. Amirul was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. He was also charged with an additional offence of reckless and dangerous driving under Section 42(1) of the same Act. He pleaded not guilty to that charge as well. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison, a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000, and a minimum five-year suspension of his driving licence. In the June 9 incident, the bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, when it collided with a car at Km53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik. Thirteen students died at the scene, and two more died while receiving treatment at the hospital. The crash also left 33 others injured, including Amirul, his assistant and the four people in the car.
