Survivor still hears cries for help, lost two close friends

KUALA LUMPUR: One of the survivors of the bus crash that killed 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students four days ago said that he could still hear his peers' cries for help on that fateful night. Recalling the harrowing moment, 21-year-old Tuan Muhammad Adham Tuan Adnan said he was seated on the right side of the third row from the back, with his three close friends a few seats away. 'I was sleeping, so I'm not sure whether the bus was speeding or not. Just before it overturned, I woke up...I heard loud noises, and the next thing I knew, I was already in a ditch,' he said when contacted by Bernama Radio today. Tuan Muhammad Adham, who is pursuing a degree in Education (Malay Language), said that with what little strength he had left and with the help of other survivors, he managed to climb out of the ditch. 'I finally saw (the gravity of) the were bodies in front of me, people were screaming for help, and some were still trapped inside the bus,' he added. Tuan Muhammad Adham, who sustained a fractured upper arm, is receiving treatment at Taiping Hospital in Perak. He said two of his close friends lost their lives that night, and another friend sustained injuries on his shoulders. On Monday, the chartered bus en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle along the East Coast Highway in Gerik. Thirty-three people were also injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.

Perak to propose upgrades to JRTB, suggests development of new alignment

IPOH: The Perak government will submit a proposal to the federal government to upgrade the East-West Highway (JRTB) linking Gerik and Jeli, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. He said the state government will also propose the development of a new alignment to replace the current route, which links Perak to the East Coast states. 'The matter (proposal to improve JRTB) was discussed during the state executive council meeting today. 'I have asked Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin (State Infrastructure, Energy, Water, and Public Transport Committee chairman) to prepare the proposal,' he said, adding that he would also propose the matter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his working visit to Lumut this Sunday. He spoke to reporters today after officiating the closing ceremony of Perak Export Day 2025, hosted by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, which was also attended by its chairman, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, here. Elaborating, Saarani said JRTB has been out of concession for the past 40 years, adding that it is high time to conduct a more thorough review of the route. 'Parts of the road have worn down to the base, exposing the soil. Patching is no longer an option. That's why we've asked Datuk Seri Nizar to outline what needs to be done in terms of alignment, road widening, construction materials, and all necessary elements, including street lighting and road markings,' he said. Meanwhile, Saarani said the state government will also propose the upgrading of Gerik Hospital, as well as increasing the number of related facilities and medical specialists along the route. 'In the event of a major incident, Gerik Hospital is insufficient to handle a large number of casualties. The federal government should also consider providing additional facilities such as mobile police stations or fire and rescue brigades along the JRTB route,' he said, adding that this is to ensure shorter response time. On Monday, 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students were killed when a chartered bus travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after colliding with a multi-purpose vehicle on the highway.

Kedah govt extends condolences to families of Gerik bus crash victims

ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Government has extended its condolences to the families of the 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who were killed in a tragic bus accident on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early yesterday morning. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said condolences were also extended to those injured in the horrific crash, including the driver and passengers of the Perodua Alza, who are from Kedah. 'My heartfelt condolences to all those affected. The families are surely devastated by the loss of their loved ones, while the injured are still receiving treatment at the hospital. I pray for their speedy recovery so they may resume their studies at UPSI, and I hope their families remain strong in facing this test. 'My sympathy also goes to the family of Ustaz Lutfi (Mohd Lutfi Radzi), the driver of the Perodua Alza involved in the crash. It is understood that his wife and children are still receiving treatment at the hospital. We have sent a representative to visit them and will continue to monitor their condition,' he told reporters after attending the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) Aidiladha gathering, here today. In the 1.10 am accident, a bus carrying 42 UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza and overturned, resulting in the deaths of 15 UPSI students. The Perodua Alza driver, Mohd Lutfi Radzi, 37; his wife Nurul Ain Zakaria, 36; and their two children, Nur Aisyah Nafishah Mohd Lutfi, 6, and Muhammad Ahsan Nafis Mohd Lutfi, 3, were also injured in the crash. Meanwhile, Muhammad Sanusi said the authorities concerned must prioritise allocations to repair, widen and straighten the JRTB as road conditions are part of the contributing factors in accidents. 'The safety aspect of public vehicles and driver's discipline are important, but the road structure also has to be taken into account. People travel the JRTB route day and night. The volume of vehicles is rising, and many of them are large, yet the road remains unchanged, it's still the same old road. 'Therefore, there needs to be a reassessment of whether the road design is suitable for current speeds, traffic volume and flow. For those in the north heading to the East Coast, that's the only main route available. So more attention must be given to prevent similar incidents from recurring,' he added.
