Kedah govt extends condolences to families of Gerik bus crash victims
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said condolences were also extended to those injured in the horrific crash, including the driver and passengers of the Perodua Alza, who are from Kedah.
'My heartfelt condolences to all those affected. The families are surely devastated by the loss of their loved ones, while the injured are still receiving treatment at the hospital. I pray for their speedy recovery so they may resume their studies at UPSI, and I hope their families remain strong in facing this test.
'My sympathy also goes to the family of Ustaz Lutfi (Mohd Lutfi Radzi), the driver of the Perodua Alza involved in the crash. It is understood that his wife and children are still receiving treatment at the hospital. We have sent a representative to visit them and will continue to monitor their condition,' he told reporters after attending the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) Aidiladha gathering, here today.
In the 1.10 am accident, a bus carrying 42 UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza and overturned, resulting in the deaths of 15 UPSI students.
The Perodua Alza driver, Mohd Lutfi Radzi, 37; his wife Nurul Ain Zakaria, 36; and their two children, Nur Aisyah Nafishah Mohd Lutfi, 6, and Muhammad Ahsan Nafis Mohd Lutfi, 3, were also injured in the crash.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Sanusi said the authorities concerned must prioritise allocations to repair, widen and straighten the JRTB as road conditions are part of the contributing factors in accidents.
'The safety aspect of public vehicles and driver's discipline are important, but the road structure also has to be taken into account. People travel the JRTB route day and night. The volume of vehicles is rising, and many of them are large, yet the road remains unchanged, it's still the same old road.
'Therefore, there needs to be a reassessment of whether the road design is suitable for current speeds, traffic volume and flow. For those in the north heading to the East Coast, that's the only main route available. So more attention must be given to prevent similar incidents from recurring,' he added.

Perodua Alza bursts into flames after collision on Kesas [WATCH]
KUALA LUMPUR: A Perodua Alza burst into flames after being hit from behind by a Kia Carnival on the Shah Alam Expressway earlier today. South Klang police chief Assistant Commissioner Ramli Kasa said the collision, which also involved a trailer, occurred at about 1.20am on the stretch from Klang to Shah Alam. "Preliminary investigations revealed the accident happened when a Perodua Alza, driven by a 20-year-old man with two passengers, was in the right lane when it was struck from behind by a Kia Carnival, also carrying two passengers and driven by a 20-year-old man. "The impact caused the Perodua Alza to lose control and swerve to the left side of the road, where it caught fire and was completely destroyed," he said in a statement today. Ramli said a 43-year-old man driving a trailer in the middle lane was unable to avoid debris from both cars. He said the driver and passengers of the Perodua Alza were taken to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang for treatment, while the driver of the Kia Carnival was treated at Pantai Hospital Klang. "No serious injuries were reported in the accident. "The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving," he said. Police have advised all road users to be careful, remain focused while driving, and obey the speed limit.

Loke: Transport Ministry weighs creating safety board to probe major road accidents
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Ministry of Transport is mulling over the proposal to establish the Malaysian Transportation Safety Board (MTSB), a special body tasked with investigating road accidents in the country, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Minister Anthony Loke said the proposal follows recommendations made by a special task force set up by the ministry to investigate the fatal accident involving members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) in Teluk Intan, as well as a tour bus crash carrying students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Gerik, Perak, earlier this year. 'This is currently under consideration at the ministerial level, but establishing a new body or agency is not easy as it involves a long and complex process,' he said in reply to Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN-Jerantut) who wanted to know about the government's commitment to implementing the task force's recommendations, particularly the establishment of MTSB. Meanwhile, Loke said the ministry would also introduce several initiatives to elevate the status of the driving profession, including training programmes aimed at producing more competent and professional drivers. 'We want to work together to train more professional drivers. The ministry has several planned actions to uplift the status of this profession…we want drivers to be respected and social status to be elevated,' he said. Additionally, Loke highlighted the ongoing issue of a shortage of bus and lorry drivers due to a lack of interest and low wages, and stressed the ministry's efforts to ensure drivers are fairly compensated in line with their working hours, workload, and the risks they face. 'However, we must not assume that just anyone, even those with criminal records or poor driving histories, can be hired as drivers. We are currently working on a database to identify individuals with past offences, especially those involving dangerous driving, so they can be filtered out,' he added. — Bernama

Overturned Perodua Alza found with stolen cables, no passengers
GERIK: Police are searching for a suspect who fled the scene of a crash after an overturned Perodua Alza revealed tools and stolen cut cables. Gerik police chief Superintendent Abdul Samad Othman said police were alerted yesterday to an SUV that had skidded and overturned along Jalan Gerik-Kupang. "There was no driver or passenger in the car (when police arrived)," Abdul Samad said when contacted, adding that the driver was believed to have been injured. He said the Perodua Alza likely skidded on its own and hit a road barrier, causing it to overturn. Abdul Samad said the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft. The offence carries a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine, or both. He urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation.
