Peter Jackson Says He's 'Not Retired' and Confirms He's Writing Three New Screenplays — GeekTyrant

Geek Tyrant7 days ago
It's been a decade since Peter Jackson wrapped up The Hobbit trilogy, and while things have been relatively quiet on the filmmaking front for him, the Oscar-winning director wants fans to know he hasn't slowed down. In fact, he's busier than you might think.
'I'm certainly not retired,' Jackson told Screen Rant in a recent interview. 'We are currently working on three different screenplays. I'm at the moment writing three different scripts.'
It's good to know that the filmmaker who delivered The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies has retired, and while Jackson didn't reveal what these projects are, there are a few clues about what he's been up to.
We already know Jackson is producing The Hunt for Gollum , the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie that Andy Serkis is set to direct next year.
'We are producing and have been writing The Hunt for Gollum , which Andy Serkis is going to direct next year. I've enjoyed working on documentaries, whether they show I've grown old or not, and obviously the [The Beatles: Get Back] project. I've enjoyed doing various things with The Beatles, which is great, and that'll probably carry on.'
Jackson's acclaimed docuseries The Beatles: Get Back gave fans an intimate look at the creation of the album Let It Be, and it sounds like his documentary work might continue alongside his narrative projects.
Jackson is also fascinated by real-world science, specifically de-extinction. He's working with Colossal Biosciences, a company attempting to bring back extinct species. Jackson couldn't hide his excitement about one particular creature:
'To me, de-extincting the Moa would be just as exciting, if not more exciting, than any film I could possibly make,' Jackson said. 'I've made a lot of movies, but to see the Giant Moa brought back would be a level of excitement that I think would supersede anything at this point in time.'
While Jackson is keeping himself busy, I would love to see him get back in the director's chair and direct a proper movie again. I've always loved his storytelling and filmmaking style! It would especially be cool to see him jump back into horror!
As for The Hunt for Gollum , it's set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027 and will explore parts of Gollum's life that were never shown on screen.
'We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn't have time to cover in the earlier films. It's too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien.'
But, while Jackson may not be cranking out blockbusters like before, he's far from done shaping stories, both on screen and in the real world.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS May Set Up Six Classic Villains in the MCU — GeekTyrant

I'm excited to see The Fantastic Four: First Steps finally bring Marvel's First Family into the MCU, but it might also be opening the door for a whole rogues' gallery of classic villains straight out of the 1960s comic pages. A new rumor from industry insider @MyTimeToShineH suggests that the film won't stop at Galactus. While Ralph Ineson's world-devouring baddie has already been confirmed, the film reportedly name-drops six more villains during its runtime, many of them core adversaries from the early Fantastic Four comics. ' Fantastic Four: First Steps starts with: Puppet Master, Mad Thinker, Diablo, Red Ghost, Wizard all get name-dropped,' @MyTimeToShineH posted on X. 'They wear the original comic costumes to fight Mole Man's monster. Black and blue.' According to the same report, The Fantastic Four team 'wear the original comic costumes to fight Mole Man's monster. Black and blue.' Mole Man is played by Paul Walter Hauser, and his role as Harvey Elder was confirmed through Marvel's first tie-in comic for the film, cementing the subterranean villain's place in the story. These villain names will be quick nods rather than full appearances, but each one has roots in the Stan Lee and Jack Kirby era of comics that helped shape Marvel's storytelling DNA. All six debuted in the 1960s, the same decade The Fantastic Four draws inspiration from for its retro-futuristic version of Earth. The movie embraces the spirit of Silver Age sci-fi, with stylized tech and optimistic greatness, and it seems like the characters will reflect that tone as well. This throwback style fits with what Marvel is aiming for in this new corner of the MCU, something classic, colorful, and fresh all at once. And of course, it all sets the stage for Galactus himself, who first appeared in Fantastic Four #48 back in 1966. With all these villains being referenced, Marvel is looking to build a foundation for the Fantastic Four. Maybe these are are villains that they battled in the past? The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits U.S. theaters on July 25, 2025.

Hellraiser is being turned into a survival horror game

The developers at Boss Team Games have such sights to show you: the studio just announced that it's taking the terrifying world of the classic Hellraiser films and turning it into a survival horror game. The new title is called Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival, and somehow it's the first gaming adaptation of the franchise, which has been around since 1987. According to the studio, the game will blend 'survival horror with a single-player, story-driven action experience.' And, yes, there will be a dark and mysterious puzzle box. There are also some notable names on board. Doug Bradley, the original actor for Hellraiser's iconic villain Pinhead, will be reprising the role, and series creator Clive Barker is assisting with the game's story. In a statement, Barker said that 'I'm eager for both the curious and the damned to experience this new chapter in the Hellraiser mythos, where every moment balances on the brink of nightmare and revelation.' While this will be the first Hellraiser game, it's part of a growing trend of classic horror franchises being adapted for the medium. The likes of Friday the 13th and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre were turned into asymmetrical multiplayer games, as was The Evil Dead, which was developed by Boss Team. Single-player survival horror seems like a better fit for Hellraiser, however, though it's unclear yet when it might be available. Right now it's listed as simply 'in development.' It'll be available on the PC, PS5, and Xbox whenever it does launch.

The Best Movies, TV, Music, Books and Theater Arriving in August

Given that the last days of summer are always a little elegiac, it makes sense that August's best cultural offerings lean heavily on nostalgia. With plenty of remakes, sequels and biographies on the way, recent (or distant) history seems to be on everyone's mind. Freakier Friday God bless the Disney executive who continues to exhume cult favorites. First it was Hocus Pocus 2; now it's a sequel to the 2003 slapstick body-swap comedy Freaky Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Both actresses are back, older if not wiser, joined by younger stars who, through magic circumstances, wake up to a stranger's face in the mirror. Aug. 8
