‘Consider plea to withdraw power connection got through false means'
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed Tangedco to consider a representation made for the disconnection of an electricity service connection obtained on a land in Usilampatti in Madurai district through misrepresentation of facts.
The court was hearing a petition filed by K. Azhaguraja of Madurai. The petitioner alleged that K. Sasikumar obtained an electricity service connection for agricultural purposes on the land belonging to one Meenakshi. Sasikumar, through misrepresentation of facts, obtained the fraudulent patta and based on that obtained a fraudulent electricity service connection in collusion with officials, the petitioner alleged.
The petitioner said since Ms. Meenakshi was frightened by the unruly act and conduct of Sasikumar, he came to her aid. He had made representations in this regard to the authorities concerned. However, they had not responded to those representations, he said.
He sought a direction to the officials to forthwith disconnect the electricity service connection and also sought a direction to the authorities to initiate criminal prosecution and recover penal charges under the Indian Electricity Act.
Justice Vivek Kumar Singh directed Tangedco to consider the petitioner's representation and pass appropriate orders after giving due opportunity to all the parties concerned in six weeks.

237 foreign nationals have been deported to their countries, Tamil Nadu government tells Madras High Court
The State government has informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that from 2022 to May 25, 2025, 237 foreign nationals have been deported to their countries. In a counter affidavit, Superintendent of Police, Security Branch CID, Chennai, N. Stephen Jesubatham, on behalf of the Director-General of Police, submitted that during this period, 66 cases were registered against 188 foreign nationals who were found to be overstaying in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, 14 cases were registered against 31 African nationals for transporting drugs and 65 cases were registered against 280 foreign nationals for other offences. According to the Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs, there are 17,770 foreigners overstaying in Tamil Nadu since 2011 (as on May 25, 2025). Several of them, who landed in Tamil Nadu, have travelled to other States. The Tamil Nadu Police and the Bureau of Immigration are taking regular efforts to trace these foreigners. Following the Pahalgam attack, the Under Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, has issued orders with regard to revocation of visas of Pakistani nationals. As per the order, all existing valid visas, except medical, long-term, diplomatic and officials visas, issued to Pakistani nationals stands revoked. Medical visa was valid till April 29. A total of 40 Pakistani nationals were reportedly staying in Tamil Nadu, of which 16 were granted long-term visas and 24 have applied for long-term visa extension. They are on valid stay as per the order of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Revised procedure A total of 95 Rohingyas (Myanmar nationals) were staying in the State. The Ministry has issued a revised procedure for the deportation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals/Rohingyas (Myanmar nationals). To restrict the movement of illegal/overstaying foreigners, one Special camp was functioning in Tiruchi. At present, 151 foreigners have been accommodated in Tiruchi Special Camp. Anticipating space constraints, the government has issued a G.O. re-notifying Cheyyar Special Camp in Tiruvannamalai district to accommodate foreign nationals till the disposal of the cases against them and deportation under the Foreigners Act. Bangladeshi nationals who stayed illegally have been arrested across the State and have been lodged in the Puzhal Central Prison. If they come out on bail, they will be lodged in special camps till their deportation. Commissioners of Police in cities and Superintendent of Police in districts who are the Foreigners Registration Officers (FRO) have been instructed to regularly locate, identify and physically verify overstaying foreigners in their jurisdiction and to regularise their stay or deport them. They were also instructed to ensure details are updated properly and defaulters are dealt with under relevant Acts/Rules. As per the directions of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, FROs in cities/districts have nominated a DSP level officer as nodal officer for Foreigners Identification Portal (FIP) to monitor foreigners. If foreigners are arrested, proposals are initiated by FROs for their deportation under the Foreigners Act. The State government will issue deportation orders after arranging travel documents to the foreigner, if required, in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs. The authorities were monitoring the foreigners and if they indulge in any illegal activities, appropriate action will be initiated including to deport them, it was submitted. A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete directed the Central government to file its counter affidavit in three weeks and posted the matter for hearing after three weeks. The court was hearing the public interest litigation petition filed by K.K. Ramesh of Madurai who sought a direction to the authorities to take immediate action against foreign nationals who were staying in India even after the expiry of their visa.

Indore e-rickshaw driver hired by school arrested for sharing child porn clips
A 60-year-old man has been arrested in Indore for allegedly sharing illegal and objectionable videos involving minors on WhatsApp. An e-rickshaw driver by profession, the man was responsible for transporting children to and from a private school in the city. According to the cyber cell of Indore Police, a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act, including Section 67B, which pertains to the electronic circulation of harmful content related to children. His mobile phone has also been seized as part of the case came to light after the cyber cell received a tip-off via an international cyber tipline named National Centre for Missing & Exploited Children, which monitors the online circulation of sensitive content involving minors. During the investigation, police found that Irshad had allegedly shared three such videos via WhatsApp. Police also revealed that the accused had been under monitoring by WhatsApp Inc, headquartered in the United States, due to suspicious online activity. In an attempt to erase digital traces, Irshad had reportedly formatted his mobile phone in 2022. However, the cyber team was able to recover crucial data from the device using technical tools. Preliminary analysis of the videos suggested that the material may have originated from foreign sources, though further verification is underway. The content in question is strictly prohibited under Indian law. Authorities are now informing the private school where the accused was employed. Bottle buy-back system a failure in Tasmac outlets in Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: The operation of unauthorised bars near Tasmac outlets has tied the hands of employees, as they are unable to affix the hologram sticker, which is necessary for the liquor bottle buy-back scheme, implemented by Tasmac after a Madras High Court direction. Sources said almost two-thirds of the 286 bars attached with outlets in the district have been functioning out of contract. A Tasmac outlet supervisor attached to Coimbatore South, who did not wish to be named, said, "Bar contractors can take the bottles to the bar and store them and sell it to anyone. As unauthorised bars cannot store and sell bottles, those should be maintained by employees and handed over to the firm which has got the contract. As most bars attached to outlets in the district are operating without renewing their contract, bottles are not be stored in the bars. That makes employees refrain from sticking the Rs 10 hologram." "Despite not pasting stickers and collecting empty bottles, supervisors of the shops are required to pay Rs 3 per bottle to the contractor, who is supposed to collect empty bottles. Without performing their duty, the private firm receives money from Tasmac, which is borne by employees of the outlets," he added. Officials contact the supervisors and instruct them to clear the total amount, which would come into lakhs each month, leaving the salespersons with no choice, other than to collect an extra of Rs 10 per bottle from customers, he further said. A John, the secretary of Tasmac employees union affiliated to CITU said, "The buy-back system was implemented to prevent disposal of empty bottles in open areas as per the High Court's order. However, the system is not followed in outlets due to structural level failure in the administration. Without correction of flaws, the buy-back system would not attain its objective and salespersons and customers will have to bear the brunt." Speaking to TNIE, R Govindharasu, senior Regional Manager of Tasmac, Coimbatore said, "The buy-back system was implemented partially in the district. We have instructed the employees to follow the norm. I will also look into the matter."
