War 2 Review: Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani starrer is an espionage that doesn't thrill
A shady organization called Kaali, made up of anonymous members from countries like India, Pakistan, China, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, aims to topple political leaders and install their own puppets. Their next target is India's prime minister. Kabir (Hrithik Roshan), once a R&AW agent, now works as a freelance operative. Kaali recruits him to join their cause, testing his mental strength to ensure his loyalty. Vikram (Jr NTR) is tasked with tracking Kabir down. Meanwhile, Kavya Luthra (Kiara Advani), an Indian aviation officer with a complicated past with Kabir, has her own personal vendetta.
Why did Kabir leave R&AW? What past does he have with Kavya? Can R&AW tackle Kaali and save the Indian Prime Minister from being compromised? To get answers to these questions, watch War 2
What Works for War 2
War 2 is a visual treat. The cinematography is stunning, with sleek shots of exotic locations that pop off the screen. The background score is riveting. The music shines, especially with tracks like Aavan Jaavan and Janaab-e-Aali. These songs aren't just catchy; their melodies are woven into the film's score, creating some of the movie's best moments. A couple of twists land well, keeping you guessing for a bit. The performances are solid, and the cast looks fantastic, adding to the film's glossy appeal. The action scenes are slick, and the production design feels top-notch. If you're here for style, War 2 delivers in spades.
What Doesn't Work for War 2
The story feels flat. Despite the grand setup, it never grabs you. The stakes should feel sky-high in an espionage thriller, but they don't. You're left wondering why you should care. At nearly three hours, the film drags. It could've easily been trimmed by 30 minutes without losing anything. The surprise cameos fall flat and don't add much. The globe-trotting aspect, hopping between countries, feels confusing. You lose track of where you are and why it matters. The conflict lacks depth, and the film often feels like a string of montages stitched together with no real emotional pull. For a thriller, it's oddly unengaging. The screenplay needed more focus to make the conspiracy feel urgent.

Performances in War 2
Hrithik Roshan is the heart of the film. He looks incredible and plays Kabir with restraint, letting subtle expressions do the heavy lifting. His maniacal laugh is chilling and adds a layer of menace. Jr NTR owns the screen with his intensity. His commanding presence makes Vikram a worthy counterpart to Kabir. Kiara Advani is solid as Kavya but feels underused.
Ashutosh Rana, playing Colonel Luthra, is reliable as always, bringing gravitas to every scene he's in. The other supporting cast holds their own. Watch out for a few new inclusions to the Spy Universe.
Final Verdict of War 2
War 2 is a mixed bag. It's a visual spectacle with a strong cast, great music, and a few exciting moments. The film's vibe is cool, and the action is polished. But the bland story and lack of gripping conflict hold it back. The stakes never feel high enough, and the long runtime doesn't help. While it's not a bad film, it's not memorable either. If you go in expecting a tight, thrilling espionage tale, you might leave disappointed. War 2, at the end of the day, is style over substance.
War 2 plays in theatres now. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.

War 2 review: Hrithik Roshan fails to shine, Jr. NTR wasted in YRF spy universe's weakest film ever
War 2 Movie Review: What if we told you that War 2 is rooted in the childhood trauma of a boy – would that feel like a fresh twist to you? We've seen films tread this path before. We've seen Hrithik pull off high-octane action sequences. We've heard actors pledge 'India first.' We've witnessed RAW vs ISI face-offs and rogue ex-RAW agents turning against the nation. So, what's truly new in Aditya Chopra's War 2? Maybe… not much. War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan (Kabir), Jr. NTR (Vikram) and Kiara Advani (Kavya), is easily one of the biggest disappointments to come out of YRF's Spy Universe. Despite the hype, it delivers little more than loud background music, slow-motion entries, and recycled tropes we've seen countless times before. What is The Plot of War 2? Kabir is an ex-RAW agent turned mercenary who kills for money. With intense eyes and unmatched sword-fighting skills, Roshan is portrayed as lethal, a man who never misses. He is compelled to join a global secret society called Kali and is assigned to assassinate Colonel Luthra (Ashutosh Rana). Luthra's daughter, Kavya (Kiara), is devastated and prepares for revenge. A new RAW Chief, Vikrant Kaul (Anil Kapoor), takes Luthra's place and recruits Vikram (Jr. NTR) for the mission. Kavya also joins the team, determined to eliminate Kabir. But what no one knows is that Kabir has his own hidden agenda – he's on a secret mission to bring Kali down from the inside. Should You Watch War 2? The plot of War 2 is painfully predictable, the VFX are subpar, and the dialogues often border on cringeworthy. Hrithik's much-hyped mass entry and a few well-executed action scenes are the only moments worth noting. As for Jr. NTR's entry – how was it, where was it, was it even real? It felt straight out of one of those jaw-dropping AI reels on Instagram, with the Shaitan song blasting in the background. The film starts well with Hrithik Roshan in full action mode – but once the dust from the opening settles, the narrative quickly slips into a predictable template. Though Roshan owned the screen with his charisma, he was more calculative this time, sticking strictly to what the script demanded. On the other hand, Jr. NTR's screen presence felt underutilised, making this arguably his weakest on-screen impact to date. It felt like director Ayaan Mukerji wasted a golden opportunity. Also, Telugu fans who came to watch Jr. NTR are likely to leave the theatre disappointed. Kiara Advani comes across as if her presence is used primarily to showcase sensuality. If she's meant to be portrayed as an officer, her character deserved a far stronger and more meaningful role. How are the VFX in War 2? Yash Raj Films (YRF) does have its own in-house VFX division called yFX and the biggest letdown of War 2 lies in it. For a film backed by Aditya Chopra with such a massive budget, the poor and subpar visual effects are nothing short of shocking. This was meant to be a visual extravaganza, a celebration of two powerhouse stars representing the North and South. Instead, it feels like a squandered opportunity, where the spectacle promised on paper never truly translates on screen. Verdict: War 2 is a missed opportunity on every front. Rating: 1.5/5

EXCLUSIVE! Coolie Vs War 2 morning occupancy report: Rajinikanth starrer gets bumper start, Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR's biggie opens on a good note
The Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR starrer has recorded 50 per cent occupancy, while the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial took a bumper start with 70 per cent occupancy across the country Today, the entertainment industry witnessed one of the biggest clashes in the history of Indian cinema with Coolie and War 2. Both pan-India biggies, which boast of a huge ensemble cast, have garnered a response among the cinegoers. As per trade expert Ramesh Bala, the Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR starrer has recorded 50 per cent occupancy, while the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial took a bumper start with 70 per cent occupancy across the country. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Since both films released on a normal working Thursday, it would be interesting to see how it perform in the evening and night shows, which can play ca rucial role in getting a healthy opening day at the box office. Talking about the Coolie, the movie also features Nagarjuna Akkineni, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Aamir Khan, Rachita Ram, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, Kanna Ravi, Monisha Blessy, Kaali Venkat, and Charle in prominent roles. On the other hand, _War 2_, which is helmed by Ayan Mukerji, features Kiara Advani and Ashutosh Rana in key roles. Firstpost gave the film 2.5 stars in its review and wrote, 'War 2 showed promise, not as a coherent story, but at least dumbed-down, cheerful fun when it began. But just like Tiger 3, it began to take itself way too seriously when all it needed to do was guffaw at its silliness. Some endless conversations and combats barely serve any purpose. The sheer disappointment of the enterprise fails its two competent leading men, that have shone in masala stories before. And War 2 is not the end, we have more films in the spy universe coming in. One happens to be Alpha and then whatnot. Shah Rukh Khan once rightly said in an interview, only the dead have seen the end of War.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
