Paul Mullin, the poster boy of a Wrexham team soaring through England's soccer leagues following its takeover by Hollywood celebrities, has left the club to join third-tier Wigan on a season-long loan deal.

'I'm excited for the next part of my story,' Mullin told Wigan's official website on Monday. 'I've scored a lot of goals over the last few years, but more than anything, I give my absolute all for the club that I'm playing for, and I'm going to do that again with Wigan.'

Wigan said the loan deal was subject to the approval of the English Football League and the Football Association, and international clearance.

Mullin helped Wrexham become the first team in the history of English football's top five divisions to secure three successive promotions, and there is a giant mural of the 30-year-old striker in the center of the city.

He formed such a close bond with Ryan Reynolds, one of the club's owners, that he even appeared in the latest Deadpool movie.

But Mullin, who had been Wrexham's player of the season in each of the three previous years, was only a bit-part performer when the team won promotion to the second tier last season.

Riders' do-it-all specialist Mario Alford doesn't have the time of day for any doubters or naysayers. There were plenty coming into the 2025 season, saying the 33-year-old had lost a step, and his job as a punt and kick returner for the team was up for grabs. Alford has shined this season, particularly in the kickoff return game, where he is averaging over 30 yards per return through three games. His latest spectacular play, a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown to seal a win for Saskatchewan, helped the Riders improve to 3-0 on the season. 'Once I got through the hole and I set up my blockers and I saw green, I said 'I'm gone' and I just knew it then,' Alford said. Last season was a down year by Alford's standards, averaging a hair under 24 yards per kickoff return and just 10 yards per punt return. But the CFL veteran, who's now in his seventh year, has never lost faith in his abilities. 'I don't pay [critics] no attention, I don't hear the noise, the media, I don't even read that stuff. I didn't even know that was being said, I had people come and tell me about it, but again I know what type of player I am. I know what I can do, been doing it for a long time.' It has been a long time, as mentioned, seven years now in the CFL ranks. Alford was popping long return touchdowns going back to his college days as a West Virginia Mountaineer. In 2014, in the first game of the season, Alford recorded a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Fast forward to 2025 and the Riders are glad to have Alford rushing the length of the field for their team. 'I think our kickoff team has been outstanding this entire year and it was only a matter of time [before they broke one]. So, I'm just so happy for those guys because they work their tails off,' Alford added. One guy working his tail off or at least trying to find a dirty shirt to block during Alford's touchdown return was Riders' defensive lineman Lake Korte-Moore. Alford joked about Korte-Moore nearly putting the kibosh on his game-clinching run. 'Yeah, he was kind of standing because he didn't have no one to block. So, he was just in the way, so I pushed him out the way and I just went up the sideline,' he laughed. Alford's next chance to electrify Rider Nation will come at home on Saturday when they host the B.C. Lions.

Roughriders announce $2.1 million profit from 2024
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are celebrating wins on and off the football field. Article content Not only is the CFL club off to a 3-0 start in the 2025 regular season, but off the field the team announced a net operating profit of $2.1 million from the 2024 season during Tuesday evening's annual general meeting. This comes one year after the team announced an annual loss of $1.1 million in 2023. Article content Article content Article content 'It was a good year financially,' said Roughriders president Craig Reynolds, who provided a media briefing alongside CFO Kent Paul on Tuesday. 'I think obviously a bounce back year on the field. Article content 'And any time you're able to have every major revenue item grow and then manage your expenses, you tend to have a really good financial year.' Article content After back-to-back seasons of missing the playoffs with 6-12 records, Saskatchewan returned to the postseason with a home playoff game in 2024 after a 9-8-1 regular season record under first-year head coach Corey Mace. In the Western semifinal, the Roughriders defeated the visiting B.C. Lions before eventually falling to the host Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the West final. Article content While the home playoff game — which generated $1.5 million in revenue — played a role in the financial turnaround, the club's new obsidian green alternate jerseys and logo helped the club see a $2.4 million increase in merchandise sales last year, which were the highest totals since 2018. Article content Article content 'Hosting a home playoff game is important, and certainly adds to the bottom line, and certainly is one of the reasons for the revenue growth,' said Reynolds. 'And then I think you can't talk about last year without talking about the success of the alt logo, alt jersey launch that had a significant impact on the financial statements. Article content Article content '(The alt jersey and logo) vastly exceeded our expectations. I think we were reasonably confident that it would resonate with our fans, but I don't think we had any idea how much it would resonate. Article content 'And I think we saw that from the launch from day one and the days following, we quickly realized we were going to blow past our projections.' Article content Overall, the Roughriders generated 35 per cent of the club's revenue from gate receipts, which were up just over $300,000 from 2023 for a total of $14.4 million. Article content Following three straight years of decline, season ticket sales — which account for roughly $10 million of the $14 million in gate receipts — are on an upward trajectory according to Reynolds.
