John Le Carré archive to go on display, including letter from Alec Guinness

RTÉ News08-07-2025
An exhibition celebrating best-selling espionage author John Le Carré is due to open in Oxford, showcasing the writer's annotated manuscripts and letters to friends.
Le Carré, whose real name was David Cornwell, wrote spy novels including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold and The Night Manager and died in December 2020 aged 89.
The exhibition, titled John le Carré: Tradecraft, will feature research, drafts and corrections for his books as well as original sketches, watercolour paintings and letters to fans and friends.
Among them is a letter from actor Alec Guinness which questioned his suitability to play George Smiley, Le Carré's best-known character, in which Guinness wrote that he was "not really rotund and double-chinned".
The author successfully convinced Guinness to accept the role in the TV series of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which aired in the late 1970s to considerable acclaim.
Prior to his career as a writer, Le Carré worked in British intelligence throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
Film versions of Le Carré's novels include 2001's The Tailor Of Panama, starring Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush and Jamie Lee Curtis; 2005's The Constant Gardener, starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz; and 2011's big screen version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Tom Hardy.
The display at the Weston Library in the Bodleian Libraries will include material that spans the novelist's time as an Oxford student to drafts written in his final weeks and is the first time some of the archive will be displayed publicly.
It was curated by Le Carré's collaborator and friend Professor Federico Varese and Dr Jessica Douthwaite with the support of the author's family.
Nick Harkaway, author and son of Le Carré, said: "Oxford took my father in when he was desperate to escape his own father's malign influence and kept his place when he couldn't afford it.
"The Bodleian was his refuge then and his choice for his archive now. It feels like a homecoming."
In a joint statement, Professor Varese and Dr Douthwaite, said: "Longstanding fans of Le Carré and those unfamiliar with his books will be equally excited by this original exhibition of his writing methods.
"Le Carré's researcher's spirit, commitment to understanding real-world problems, meticulous attention to detail and working relationships are uncovered in an engaging and colourful review of his life and career."
The exhibition's title plays on the term "tradecraft" which Le Carré used to describe techniques of espionage but may also be applied to his own craft as a writer and social commentator, organisers said
It is due to open on 1 October 2025 until 6 April 6 2026.

Dad of four Lee packed up his entire life last month, and relocated to a new home in Warsaw, with his wife and two youngest children. Lee described the move as an "emotional roller coaster", but claims the only thing he misses about England is three pin plugs. He added that he believes Poland is a "better country, with a lot more prospects, and a beautiful country". Lee has been documenting his move on TikTok, which he hopes will inspire other people to leave the UK too. Advertisement "If you are thinking of quitting the UK, consider Poland", he said in a video posted to his account @thereconnectedlife. "It's a wonderful country with wonderful people, beautiful lakes, beautiful cities and food. It's just amazing!" As well as marvelling at Poland's beauty, Lee has raved about how cheap the eastern European nation is, revealing that he and his son were both able to get their hair cut, for a total of £8. Explaining his reasons for relocating to Poland, Lee said he hopes to "reconnect with life, reconnect as a married couple, reconnect with our kids". Advertisement He added that the UK had "drained" all of the fun and happiness out of his life. Lee is now applying for permanent residency in the country, which he said "shouldn't be a problem", as his wife is Polish. I ditched the UK & bought a house for the same price as a summer holiday He has also been learning Polish, and hopes to fully immerse himself in the country's culture. Currently, Lee does not have a job in his new home, but he plans on buying properties to rent, trading cryptocurrency and starting an online business to make cash. Advertisement Once he has this sorted, he said his "dream life" in Poland will be complete. Lee's video has likely left many intrigued, as it has racked up over 111,000 views on the video sharing platform. How easy is it to move abroad? Brexit means British citizens now have to apply for visas to move to countries within the EU. While some countries residency restrictions are easier than others, here's what you need to do at home before moving: Notify HMRC about your upcoming move. Let your local authority know and provide a forwarding address. Contact your mortgage and utility providers and bank before leaving. If you have paid enough UK national insurance contributions, you can qualify for a state pension abroad - contact the International Pension Centre. You can sign up to the Royal Mail's redirection service. If you have outstanding student loans, contact the Student Loans Centre. If you have children, give due notice to childcares and schools. TikTok users raced to the video's comments section to share their thoughts on his big move. One person said: "We have been living here 4 years now, good luck with the move!" "I Went last year and it's so beautiful."

Experts issue warning to Brit parents over the Labubu toys & the simple trick to check you haven't bought a ‘dodgy doll'

IT'S one of the most sought-after buys of this year. But now Brit parents have been issued an urgent warning over the viral Labubu toys. 3 Labubus have captured the heart of the internet and have sparked a frenzy Credit: AP 3 British authorities have seized hundreds of thousands of counterfeits - which can also pose a serious health risk Credit: 3 Authorities in the UK have started issuing warnings about the dupes Credit: Intellectual Property Labubus are undoubtedly the toy of 2025 - with big names, such as Rihanna, David Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Gemma Collins and Olivia Attwood showing off the little monsters. With their devilish toothy grins and wide eyes, Labubus have captured the heart of the internet and have sparked a frenzy, with mile-long queues lining up to get their hands on the toys. A single doll can set you back anywhere from £13.50 to £211 depending on the rarity of the design. But dodgy dealers looking to make a quick buck are using underhand tactics to profit off shoppers - and experts have warned the dodgy dolls pose a serious risk. read more on parenting CLASS ACT Parents racing to buy back to school essentials & they bag a haul for under £10 The ''dangerous counterfeits'' could pose a choking hazard for children, Hull City Council's Trading Standards team told Mail Online. Rogue traders are cashing in on their popularity by selling poor-quality versions with small parts that can easily detach. Hundred have been seized, but it is feared there could be many more still on sale across the nation. However, there are also easy ways to check if you have purchased a fake Labubu. The dodgy dolls tend to have matt packaging rather than glossy and more or less than the nine gnashers the original Labubus have. A different shape or size of the mouth can also be an indicator you've bought a dangerous counterfeit. Dramatic moment crowds join massive queue to grab viral Labubu dolls as latest doll craze sweeps across the world The quality of a fake Labubu will also be of poorer standard, like wobbly limbs and odd colours. To really know if you've got the real deal, buyers of newer editions will find a UV-detectable seal on the right foot. Under UV light, shoppers should see a silhouette of the specific Labubu model. It's understood more than 100,000 counterfeit dolls have already been seized by UK Border Force, arriving in the country in fast parcels or via air cargo. What are Labubu and why are they so popular? LABUBU is a brand of plushies designed by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung and loved by celebrities like Olivia Attwood, Dua Lipa and Rihanna. The brand made its debut in 2015, but skyrocketed in global popularity after hitting Pop Mart shelves in 2019. Pop Mart is a Chinese toy retailer, known for its collectible designer models that are often sold in a blind box format, meaning you don't know what you've got until you've opened it. After mammoth success overseas, the Labubu craze has now made its way to the UK. The first three months of 2025 were wildly successful for the brand, with Brits searching high and low to nab one of the quirky figurines. Since opening stores in London and Manchester over the last 12 months, Labubu dolls have become cult collectibles among grown British women. Labubus come in an array of vibrant colours, unique shapes and various sizes, spanning from plush toys to striking vinyl figures. They come as little toys you can hook on your handbag, as well as mega-sized figures and quirky home decorations. The "monster elves" are sold in blind boxes, meaning consumers can't see their new doll until it is unwrapped. This clever marketing tactic designed to build suspense has been deliberately exploited by counterfeiters who are packing the boxes with cheap dupes. The fake dolls are known as Lafufus and they are flooding the global market - selling for as little as £2.99. Councils have warned that children in Scotland and Wales have fallen ill following exposure to the dolls. Helen Barnham, Deputy Director of Enforcement at the Intellectual Property Office, told The Sun: "We're seeing criminals increasingly exploit viral toy trends, with counterfeit versions of popular products appearing within days of them going viral. "These counterfeit toys are unlikely to have undergone the rigorous safety testing required for genuine products and can pose serious safety risks. "Children's safety must always come first, and we encourage parents to always research products thoroughly and only purchase from trusted sources."

Onlookers told the Daily Mail how the presenter looked 'crestfallen' during the 'difficult time'. The snaps obtained by the publication show Cat without her wedding ring as she and hairdresser pal Ben Skervin tucked into dinner at restaurant Chiringuito de Garraf. Ben is a celebrity hairstylist and has worked with the likes of the Spice Girls, Mariah Carey and Madonna. A fellow diner said: 'Cat looked a bit down and a touch crestfallen, not her usual spritely self, which is understandable given her marriage split. 'Her accent was recognisable to a number of Brits at the restaurant, which is popular with celebrities, and she had interacted with a few British kids also dining there 'She clearly needed to be around her nearest and dearest during such a difficult time.' It comes after sources revealed that, after Cat was a no-show at the funeral of Patrick's mother in March, his family 'knew the marriage was over'. One said: 'Whatever rockiness was going on in the marriage, something as momentous as his mother's funeral, you would make up even temporarily and just put your 'best face' on as we say in Northern Ireland. "Cat obviously knew how close Patrick was to Mary and she should have come to be by his side, a hand on his shoulder as he buried his mother. Patrick Kielty 'didn't feel like an equal partner' in failed marriage to Cat Deeley - admitting 'rough patches' they had to work through 'The fact that she stayed in London and presented This Morning on the day, it's not been forgotten.
