WAVES 2025: First-ever White Paper on India's live events economy unveiled

Hans India03-05-2025

Mumbai: Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L. Murugan, on Saturday unveiled a first-of-its-kind White Paper that presents a comprehensive analysis of India's rapidly expanding live entertainment industry -- highlighting emerging trends, growth trajectories and strategic recommendations for the sector's continued evolution.
Commissioned by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the White Paper, launched in the presence of Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, I&B Ministry, focuses on India's live events landscape which is undergoing a transformation.
The period from 2024 to 2025 marks a defining inflection point, with international acts such as Coldplay performing in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, signalling India's readiness to host global-scale events.
According to the ministry, key trends in the sector include the rise of event tourism, with nearly half a million attendees traveling specifically for live music events — indicating the emergence of a robust music-tourism economy.
Premium ticketing segments -- such as VIP experiences, curated access, and luxury hospitality -- have witnessed over 100 per cent year-on-year growth, pointing to an increasingly experience-driven audience.
Participation from tier 2 cities has surged, driven by multi-city tours and the growing popularity of regional festivals.
'Live entertainment is not a side note to India's creative economy anymore; it is a strategic lever that stimulates employment and drives skill development. Large-scale events in the current landscape typically generate approximately 2,000 to 5,000 temporary jobs each, underscoring the sector's growing role in supporting livelihoods and fostering a dynamic workforce,' said the I&B Ministry.
The event also saw the launch of key reports, including the 'Statistical Handbook on Media & Entertainment Sector 2024-25' by I&B Ministry, among others.
According to the ministry, India is on track to position itself as one of the top five live entertainment destinations globally by 2030, unlocking new avenues for economic growth, employment generation, tourism, and enhanced global cultural presence.

Did You Know Astronaut Rakesh Sharma's Son Is A Filmmaker?

New Delhi: Did you know that Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to fly to space, has a son who chose a very different career path? His son Kapil Sharma is a filmmaker who directed the 2013 movie I, Me Aur Main, starring John Abraham, Chitrangda Singh and Prachi Desai. Kapil Sharma may not have followed in his father's footsteps, but space was very much a part of his childhood. In an interview with in 2011, Kapil recalled what it was like growing up as the son of India's first astronaut. "I was 10 and I remember everything. I knew by the age of four or five what a fighter aircraft was and what they did. I knew what my dad did," he said. He shared how fascinated he was seeing his father return from night flying missions: "For me, at the age of four or five, that was terrific when he came home with helmet and oxygen mask. I would wait for him to go on night flights just to see him in his clothes." Kapil said he was already familiar with sci-fi thanks to Star Wars, so when he learned that his father would be going to space, it felt surreal. He added, "For a kid, it was like going to an amusement park." While Rakesh Sharma was training for his space mission, the family lived in Moscow for a year-and-a-half. "The main launch took place in Kazakhstan. The family stays in Moscow, and when there is an opportunity to speak, mom would be taken to mission control in Moscow and she would speak to dad," Kapil recalled. When they returned to India, Kapil realised the scale of his father's fame. He shared, "In school, I was a star. I didn't always want that attention, but I got it by default." But it was cinema, not aviation or space, that captured Kapil's imagination. From a young age, he was drawn to theatre and backstage work. "In school and college, I was always interested in theatre and plays. I loved watching movies and everything about it, and somewhere in my middle teens, I wanted to know about the process of filmmaking," he said. Kapil studied environmental science at St Joseph's in Bangalore, but eventually pursued a master's in mass communication from Pune University, with a specialisation in video production. He began his career working in television, creating news features and fiction shows. Wanting to break into films, he then went to the US to study at the International Film and Television Workshop in Maine, where he learned skills like cinematography, direction and scriptwriting. Kapil returned to India in 2001 and, in 2013, made his directorial debut with I, Me Aur Main. Interestingly, before becoming a director, Kapil also had a brief stint in acting. He appeared in films such as The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. Kapil's sister, Krittika Sharma, is a media artist. Meanwhile, Rakesh Sharma, now retired, has expressed his desire to be part of India's future space missions. Speaking to NDTV, he said he would like to fly in India's own manned mission Gaganyaan. The Gaganyaan mission, expected to launch in 2025-2026, is a key part of India's human spaceflight programme. Launched from Sriharikota on the Human Rated Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (GSLV Mk III), the Gaganyaan mission will send up to three astronauts into low-Earth orbit for up to three days. As the country waits for its next big leap in space, another Indian Air Force officer is getting ready to make history. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, selected as one of ISRO's four astronauts for the Gaganyaan mission, is set to launch aboard the Axiom Mission 4. He and three other astronauts will travel aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station, scheduled for launch on June 10 at 8:22 am ET from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre. The Axiom 4 crew will orbit the station and carry out science experiments, outreach and commercial tasks, marking yet another milestone in India's growing space legacy, one that started with Rakesh Sharma's historic journey four decades ago.

Thug Life worldwide box office collection day 2: Kamal Haasan film lags behind Indian 2, PS 1-2 at ₹52 crore

Thug Life worldwide box office collection day 2: Mani Ratnam's much-awaited Thug Life, his reunion film with Kamal Haasan after almost four decades, released in theatres this Thursday. The film opened to lukewarm reviews with many criticising the film's second half in particular. According to Sacnilk, the film has collected ₹52 crore worldwide. (Also Read: Thug Life box office collection day 2: Kamal Haasan film sees big drop, Hindi version wiped out by Housefull 5) The trade website reports that Thug Life collected ₹22.65 crore net and ₹26.30 crore gross in India in two days. It brought in ₹25.70 crore from overseas, taking the total collection to ₹52 crore worldwide in two days. While the numbers are good, expectations were higher for the film, given that it's a Kamal and Mani film. For context, Kamal's last film, Indian 2 with Shankar, which opened to disastrous reviews, collected ₹84 crore in two days. Mani's hit films Ponniyin Selvan – I & II made ₹110 crore and ₹146.65 crore respectively in two days. However, now that the film has sustained well during weekdays, it remains to be seen if collections pick up during the weekend. It is also worth noting that the film missed a release in Karnataka due to the Kannada language row, which would've also affected the numbers. It has been estimated that the film might lose ₹40 crore overall due to it. Thug Life is Mani and Kamal's first film together after the 1987 cult classic Nayakan. Kamal plays a character named Shaktivel again, much like his previous film with Mani. However, instead of Velu, he's referred to as Shakti this time around. The gangster drama revolves around him and his adopted son, Amaran, played by Silambarasan. Trisha Krishnan, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Ali Fazal, Abhirami, and others also star in it.
