Decision on Manikrao Kokate after meeting him next week: Ajit Pawar

Hindustan Times3 days ago
MUMBAI: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday said he will meet agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) next week to hear him out on the controversy over the minister playing a card game on his phone in the legislative council, and then take a decision. Pawar also emphasised that this was not the first time Kokate, a five-time lawmaker, had landed in the middle of a controversy and had received a warning.
'He is yet to meet me. The last time he did something like this, I asked him to be careful. After the second incident, I had warned him. Now, I will meet him either on Monday or Tuesday to hear his side of the story and then take a call after discussing it with the chief minister (Devendra Fadnavis),' Pawar told reporters in the state secretariat on Thursday afternoon.
To be sure, Fadnavis has already made his displeasure known at Kokate's conduct in the legislative council.
'It was absolutely wrong. Ministers are expected to take legislative business very seriously even if their business is not on the agenda. Members do read documents and news but the video of Kokate playing rummy was inappropriate. Even though he tried to clarify that the rummy game popped up on his mobile screen, what happened was indecorous,' Fadnavis told reporters on July 21 after the video of Kokate playing an online card game in the legislative council emerged.
Kokate, who represents Sinnar assembly in Nashik, initially denied the accusation, insisting that he wanted to watch the proceedings on YouTube when an ad for a card game appeared on the screen and people thought he was playing. Legislator Rohit Pawar of the NCP (Sharad Pawar), who released the first video of the minister playing cards, put out two more to rebut the minister's claim and demonstrate that the card game visible on Kokate's phone was not an advertisement. Rohit said the NCP should sack the minister, a demand echoed by other opposition parties.
Responding to the demands, Ajit Pawar said he was an outspoken leader who called the spade a spade and pointed to a probe ordered by the legislative council chairman Ram Shinde into the episode.
Senior NCP leaders said Ajit Pawar has two options: to ask Fadnavis to drop Kokate from the council of ministers or change his portfolio.
'The final call will be taken by Ajit dada in consultation with senior leaders before meeting Fadnavis,' said a senior minister seeking anonymity. NCP state president Sunil Tatkare has already said Ajit Pawar will take a call on Kokate.
Kokate is no stranger to controversies. In January, he embarrassed the ruling alliance when he said that there was '3% to 4% corruption in every government scheme'.
In February, he compared farmers with beggars and said, 'Nowadays, even beggars do not even accept a single rupee but the government offers crop insurance to farmers for just one rupee.'
In April, he again sparked a row when he accused farmers of deliberately defaulting on crop loans in the hope of getting a loan waiver, and splurging the money saved on weddings and engagements.
The controversy further intensified when Kokate accused the media of twisting facts and offered a bizarre clarification for his previous statement about crop insurance for Re 1. 'The point of that statement was that the government takes Re 1 from farmers against insurance. It doesn't give money to them, so the beggar, in this case, is the government and not the farmers. But my statement was twisted,' he said.
An irked Fadnavis again expressed his unhappiness at the latter's fresh remarks. 'I didn't hear what he said but if he has said something like this, then it is wrong,' he said on Tuesday.

Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam official suspended for misbehaving with consumer

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Lucknow, Jul 27 (PTI) A superintendent engineer (SE) of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam has been suspended for allegedly misbehaving with a consumer, officials said on Sunday. Sharing the suspension order of SE Prashant Singh on X, Uttar Pradesh Energy and Urban Development Minister A K Sharma said, 'Upbhogta Devo Bhav (consumer is god)!" 'The SE of Basti, Prashant Singh, has been suspended with immediate effect for his insensitivity and indecent behaviour towards the complaint of electricity consumers. 'All other electricity officers and employees have been directed for effective and quick solution of consumer problems. Everyone should be ready for public service," Sharma said. The suspension order was issued on Saturday by Chief Engineer (administration) Arvind Nayak on behalf of the managing director of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam (PVVN). It said that Bharat Pandey, a resident of Mudaghat in Basti district, lodged a complaint with Singh over phone on July 18 about non-supply of electricity. The suspension order said Singh behaved 'indecently" with the complainant despite being in a responsible position, which fell under the category of 'misconduct". Singh will remain attached to the office of the MD, PVVN, Varanasi, during his suspension period, the order said. Accountability will be fixed from the top management of the power corporation to the field-level officials, he said. Arbitrary behaviour of any staff member hindering development will be strongly dealt with, the minister said in the statement. 'Despite substantial investments in power infrastructure – over Rs 26,000 crore in the last three years – the image of the government and the department is being damaged by the carelessness of a few employees. 'In view of the state's development needs and the rights of the consumers, such irresponsibility will no longer be accepted," Sharma said. Nitesh Rane speaking as per instructions of his party seniors: Rohit Pawar comments on allegation that he was ‘ready to join BJP in 2019'

Pune: Responding to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Nitesh Rane's claim that "Rohit Pawar was willing to join BJP in 2019", the NCP (SP) functionary and MLA from Karjat-Jamkhed constituency on Sunday said, "He (Rane) is speaking as per the instructions of his party seniors. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " Rohit Pawar was interacting with the media on the sidelines of a visit to a party worker's office in Pune city. On Rane's comment, he further said, "When Rane was with Congress, he used to speak very aggressively. He would go before people with progressive thoughts. But after going to BJP, he is toeing the line of his higher-ups. He is now continuously trying to get a good position in the party." He added, "The Rane family members should speak after they look at their own past of jumping between parties." The MLA commented on various political developments during the interaction. On (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray's visit to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Pawar said it was a family visit, and there is no need to take political inferences from it. "If the two brothers are coming together, it is a good sign as per the culture of Maharashtra," he said. Asked if he feels voices of dissent are stifled, Pawar alleged that investigating authorities, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), had taken action against him when he tried to speak against the ruling govt in rallies like the Yuva Sangharsh Yatra. He added that action was initiated against him even when he posted a video of state agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate on social media. Pawar said cabinet minister Hasan Mushrif's recent statement, wherein he reportedly spoke about offering rewards to farmers if he became the chief minister, is "a commentary on state govt's ignorance towards farmers' issues".

Govt plans to install 400 new BSNL towers in Naxalite-affected and remote areas in Chhattisgarh

The Central government of India is planning to install 400 new BSNL towers in the Naxalite-affected and remote areas of Chhattisgarh to improve the region's digital communications, reported the news agency PTI, citing Union Minister Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, on Sunday, 27 July 2025. 'The Central government is working on a plan to install 400 new BSNL towers in the Naxal-affected and remote areas of Chhattisgarh to strengthen digital communication,' said Minister Pemmasani. According to the agency report, the Minister said that the towers will be installed in phases after the required approvals from the security forces and the forest department are obtained. Pemmasani, the Minister of State for Rural Development and Telecommunications, conducted a high-level review meeting in Raipur, which was attended by senior officials from various departments and from the telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). 'BSNL is currently providing high-quality 4G services across the country, and with this expansion, we are realising the mission of delivering digital connectivity to the last village in the country,' Pemmasani said, according to the agency report. Minister Pemmasani also highlighted that the government is conducting development work in the LWE-affected areas (Left-Wing Extremist) in a 'mission mode' and said that the government is coming up with a strategy to deliver services at people's doorsteps who are living in these regions. Digitising schools to enable students to prepare for competitive exams like JEE and NEET, providing special facilities for differently-abled students under a sensitive and inclusive initiative, are among the development measures according to the agency report. 'Rapid development and transformation are now being seen in deprived, tribal, and remote areas as well,' he said, cited by the news agency. The Minister in the meeting also expressed his satisfaction over the fast and effective implementation of flagship schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Gramin (PMAY-G), and the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Chhattisgarh. Minister Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani also appreciated the role of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) while acknowledging initiatives like the 'Pink Auto' scheme to make women self-reliant, which could become a role model for other states. 'The SHGs are being linked with various schemes for providing them financial assistance, training, and marketing opportunities. This is helping women become self-reliant and increasing opportunities for self-employment,' he said, reported the news agency.
