Olympic gold medalist Gwen Jorgensen among winners at America's Triathlon Cup in Homestead
Former Olympians and college standouts from across the United States and more than 26 countries competed in triathlon events on the speedway grounds. The events were sponsored by CLASH Endurance.
The America's Triathlon Cup Miami took competitors on a draft-legal sprint-distance triathlon comprised of a 750-meter swim, a 20K bike and 5K run all within the speedway. Gwen Jorgensen, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist, won the women's elite division and Reese Vannerson, a member of USA Triathlon's elite development squad Project Podium, won the men's.
Jorgensen won by dominating in the 5k, and finished in a time of 55 minutes, 41 seconds. The 38-year-old mother of two won four World Triathlon Cup races during the 2023 season and on Friday ran the day's fastest 5k (16:58) to secure her first win of 2025.
'It was super windy. Thankfully, I've been in Boulder where there are 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts every day, so I've had practice in the wind. I knew that was going to make it tough,' Jorgensen told USA Triathlon. 'It's really special to have my family here and have a race in the United States. It's really rare to have racing in the U.S., and you look at the start line with how many athletes were here today who took the opportunity to race — that was probably the biggest start field I've ever raced in.'
Gina Sereno (USA) led the women's field out of the swim. Several groups were seen on the bike and then Jorgensen dominated the run. Mexico's Marcela Alvarez Solis placed 2nd at 55:45 and Danielle Orie (USA) crossed at 55:55.
On the men's side, Igor Dupios (France) led out of the swim and Vannerson dominated the run. His first-place time of 49:54 was followed by Dupois in second place with a time of 50:12 and Darr Smith (USA) was third in 50:14.
'All in all, I'm really happy with my race. The bike was a lot harder than I anticipated with the strong winds. Big ups to everyone out there. It was really hard, hot day,' Vannerson said. 'The guys at the front of the pack are no slouches; one of them (Seth Rider) has an Olympic medal, Darr I've looked up to for a long time, so to track them down means a whole lot. I'm just blessed.'
More than 100 college triathlon teams competed in the Collegiate Club National Championships. Clare Anne Dasso of Queens University of Charlotte crossed the line in the draft-legal portion in 58:55 and UCLA's Edoardo G. Leone completed the same race in 52:00.
In the Olympic distance, Annie Meeder of Univ. of Colorado (Boulder) finished in 2:07:58 and Mark Romano of the U.S. Air Force Academy came over the finish line at 1:51:13. AJ Cuddeback won the non-binary Olympic-distance event category with a time of 2:40:48.
In the Mixed Team Relay race with each completing a super-sprint triathlon. Queens Univ. of Charlotte earned 1st place at 1:03:18, followed by Univ. of Colo (Boulder) at 1:04:59 and in 3rd, United States Naval Academy at 1:05:12.

Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk suspended 4 years after positive test
Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk, a world championships silver medalist in the long jump and triple jump, has been suspended four years after testing positive for metabolites of testosterone. Bekh-Romanchuk, a 30-year-old, three-time Olympian from Ukraine, returned the positive result from a Dec. 7 drug test. She denied taking testosterone, speaking in a May 21 interview with anti-doping authorities. On July 9, she provided an explanation that a doctor alleged that her medical condition and treatment could explain an elevated level of (endogenous) testosterone. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), which handles doping cases in track and field, did not accept the explanation to affect the standard four-year ban. Her suspension began May 13, the date she was first provisionally banned. She can appeal the ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. "I can no longer fight on two fronts — my honest name in front of the Athletics Integrity Unit and my future in my personal life," was posted on Bekh-Romanchuk's social media, according to a translation. "It's incredibly exhausting, firstly emotionally and has an impact on my health. Sometimes it's important to take a break and get your priorities right. That's why I decided to take a break to focus on my family and my own health. Soon the decision of the Athletics Integrity Unit will be published, with which I strongly disagree. I refused to sign any documents that required recognition of my guilt, because I am an honest person and my humanity and dignity are important to me. It pains me that my case has been handled carelessly and not conducted the necessary investigation. I understand that this raises a lot of questions - so soon I will be giving a big interview in which I will tell everything frankly." Bekh-Romanchuk won world championships silver in the long jump in 2019 and silver in the triple jump in 2023. Her best Olympic finish was fifth in the long jump at the Tokyo Games. Her most recent competition was the Paris Games, where she placed 11th in the long jump after being sidelined by injury earlier in 2024. Iga Swiatek wins Cincinnati Open title, defeats Jasmine Paolini
CINCINNATI -- Third-ranked Iga Swiatek captured the Cincinnati Open title for the first time by defeating No. 7 Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4 on Monday night. Swiatek had failed to advance past the semifinals in her six previous appearances at the Cincinnati Open. She reached the semifinals in Cincinnati each of the past two years, but lost to eventual champions Coco Gauff in 2023 and Aryna Sabalenka in 2024. 'It means a lot to me,' Swiatek said. 'This year I really wanted it. I'm just very happy. It's nice to check off the list another tournament that I haven't won. I have friends here. It's a nice, relaxed tournament before New York." Swiatek has won all six meetings against the Italian, dropping only one set in those matches. Paolini jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set but Swiatek roared back to go ahead 5-3. Paolini broke serve to get even at 5-5, but Swiatek closed out a first-set victory in 56 minutes. Swiatek's eighth ace of the match gave her a 5-3 lead in the second set. Paolini broke serve twice in the second set and was within 5-4, but Swiatek was able to serve out the match for her 24th career singles title. 'This season hasn't been easy," Swiatek said. 'I've had areas to improve. It's not easy to win tournaments when everyone is expecting you to.' Swiatek had seven double faults to two for Paolini. But she also had nine aces, while Paolini had none. 'When the rallies were going, I felt good on the court,' Paolini said. 'The serves were the difference. When she needed an ace, she hit an ace.' Paolini is the first Italian woman to reach the finals in Cincinnati. Since she was a qualifier at the Cincinnati Open in 2023, Paolini has reached two Grand Slam singles finals, won a Grand Slam doubles title and an Olympic gold medal. 'It was definitely a positive tournament for me,' Paolini said. 'It wasn't enough, of course. I just need to improve.' The Cincinnati Open is considered a tuneup for the U.S. Open, which begins Sunday in New York. The last two years, both the men's and women's Cincinnati Open champions went on to win the final Grand Slam tournament of the year. ___

USA Hockey Invites 44 NHL Players To Olympic Orientation Camp: Full List
USA Hockey announced 44 players will head to the U.S. men's Olympic orientation camp in Plymouth, Mich. The camp, scheduled for Aug. 26 and 27, is mainly for administrative and team-building purposes and does not feature any formal on-ice activity or public component. All but one of Team USA's players at the 4 Nations Face-Off will attend after finishing second in that tournament. Matthew Tkachuk will not attend, but a player does not have to be at the orientation camp to be on the final Olympic roster, USA Hockey said. Tkachuk was already one of six players named to Team USA, with the others being Jack Eichel, Auston Matthews, Brady Tkachuk, Quinn Hughes and Charlie McAvoy. Only five of the invitees have played in the Olympics before. Patrick Kane was at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics, while Ryan McDonagh was on the 2014 team. Brock Faber, Matthew Knies and Jake Sanderson were college hockey players on Team USA at the 2022 Olympics, which did not feature NHLers. After the Americans won gold at the IIHF men's World Championship for the first time in 92 years, 12 players from that squad are part of the orientation camp as well. Goaltenders Joey Daccord and Jeremy Swayman are among that group, as well as Clayton Keller, Tage Thompson and Zach Werenski. USA! USA! Americans Embarking On World Hockey Domination When USA defeated Sweden 5-3 in the gold-medal game of the Hlinka Gretzky Cup on the weekend, it marked the second time less than three months that the Americans have won a tournament that they traditionally almost never win. The 44 invitees consist of 25 forwards, 15 defensemen and four goaltenders. Hockey Canada, meanwhile, invited 42 NHL players to its men's Olympic orientation camp, which included 26 forwards, 13 defenders and three goaltenders. Here's the United States' full list of orientation camp participants.
