'People say the name I gave my dog isn't normal – but I love it'

While you'll find plenty of dogs named Luna and Baileys frolicking in the park, it's not every day that a dog's name grabs your attention. That's precisely what happens when one woman takes her golden retriever puppy out and about, having chosen an unconventional name just for kicks. Sharing her story on Reddit, she wrote: "She's my first dog as an adult, and I put so much thought into naming her, wanted something elegant, unique but not ridiculous, a little literary but still cute." The woman went on to describe why she chose the name Ellowyn, which evokes "forests, old poetry and a fairy-tale" for her, aiming for something "Not made up, not trendy-trendy, just... whimsical." Yet, the name has drawn some unexpected reactions when she calls out to her pet in public, with some even suggesting she opt for different names for the sake of the dog. Recounting the responses she's received, she said: "Here's some of the feedback I've gotten from people I thought would be supportive. My roommate, 'Oh. That's... a name. Are you gonna call her Ellie or something normal?'" She added: "A friend from college, 'Is that, like, Elowen? But spelled wrong? Or... Tolkien?' My brother sends me a meme about white girls naming their pets like Renaissance babies. "My mum: 'Are you sure that's not going to confuse people at the vet?' She's a dog. Not enrolling in kindergarten!' "And for what it's worth, Ellowyn responds to it already, and it suits her perfectly. She's calm and a little goofy and loves pinecones." The owner concluded: "Anyway, lesson learned: maybe I won't announce the name next time until it's on the dog tag and too late to argue." In response to her post, one follower commented: "I think if it were a child it would be, but pets kind of have different rules. They don't need to know how to spell their name and they won't know if anyone makes fun of them. The only person who will have to correct people on spelling is you! "I mean, my cat is called Inspector Clawseau. And the dog is Bruce Springersteen. And many pet rats with silly pun names. If it make you happy then who cares?" Another chimed in with some practical advice, saying: "It's a dog. Name as you please, but from years of experience with dogs it's not a name that rolls off the tongue when trying to train them or call their name from danger. That can be the official name but I suspect that Ellie will get a better response from the dog." A third shared their own experience, adding: "My dog was named Elphaba three years ago, way before the movie came out and only theatre nerds knew who she was. I caught so much crap from family and friends who were convinced the dog would never learn her name. "But Elphie had the last laugh. She answers to Elphaba, any nickname you could dream up, and the whole family kept getting it wrong until the movie made it mainstream (insert eye roll here, you're welcome)."

Amazon Prime viewers urged to binge 'best show on TV' this weekend

The Exorcist was cancelled after just two seasons due to low ratings, but it still has a huge following of fans who have praised it as one of the best horror series on TV Amazon Prime Video subscribers are racing against time to devour what enthusiasts have dubbed "one of the best horror shows on television". The Exorcist, a familiar tale to those who relish in frights, was reborn as a television series in 2016. ‌ Drawing inspiration from William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel, the series was billed as "a modern reinvention" of the "propulsive, serialized, psychological thriller". ‌ Set within the universe of the iconic 1973 movie, it weaves a sequel narrative that nods to elements of the original story. Starring Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Kurt Egyiawan, Hannah Kasulka, Geena Davis, and Alan Ruck, The Exorcist delves into the terror of a family under siege by supernatural forces. The plot thickens as a mother, plagued by nightmarish visions and her husband's mental unravelling, seeks help for the eerie disturbances threatening her daughters, leading to an alliance with church leaders and a battle against malevolent entities. A Reddit user extolled the virtues of the show, stating: "Both seasons are worth watching, especially since they're only 10 episodes each. I found the first season to be great and the second season to be even better. It was one of the best shows on television if you ask me. The quality of it in every aspect blew me away to be honest, I was so disappointed when I found out it was cancelled." Another commented: "Bro, I couldn't believe when it was cancelled. This show caught me TOTALLY by surprise. I figured it'd be dumb AF and cheesy but NOPE. The acting is unbelievable, the music sublime, and the storyline was deftly crafted. It wasn't just was REALLY good." ‌ "I watched both seasons and thought the cast was great and it was very well written. I loved it. I just wish it hadn't been on Fox so we would have got more seasons. It was definitely one of the best shows you're not watching. Fairly original take," a third chimed in with high praise. On the Rotten Tomatoes platform, the show's first season achieved an impressive 79% rating, complemented by a nearly flawless 91% audience approval score. Yet the second series managed to outdo its predecessor with a pristine 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, alongside a formidable 90% from viewers. ‌ "The best horror series I ever watched. I truly loved the series and can't stop watching," lauded a fan. "Gripping, sucked me in straight away. Three episodes in I stopped and decided to wait till the weekend so I could binge," opined another viewer. Though The Exorcist faced cancellation due to lacklustre ratings, creator Jeremy Slater had previously hinted at exciting future prospects. Speaking to TV Line, he teased: "There may even be a potential for telling stories that are happening on branching timelines and flashbacks and different things like that." The Exorcist is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
