The floor mat has hurt the religious sentiments of many Hindus, particularly in Odisha, where Lord Jagannath is deeply revered.
A doormat featuring the image of Lord Jagannath, one of the most sacred deities in Hindu culture, has sparked outrage after being listed on Chinese-owned e-commerce platform AliExpress. The floor mat, meant for wiping feet, has hurt the religious sentiments of many Hindus particularly in Odisha where Lord Jagannath is deeply revered.
Photos of the product, which display the deity's face printed on the mat along with an image of someone stepping on it, have been widely circulated on social media. The listing describes it as a 'Non-slip soft water uptake carpet" and shows a price of around Rs 787.
Outraged to see the sacred image of Mahaprabhu Jagannath on a doormat that @AliExpress_EN is selling. As an Odia and one among millions of devotees, this is unacceptable. I see a deeper conspiracy by this Chinese eCommerce site, already banned in India. It's just the latest in a…— Baijayant Jay Panda (@PandaJay) July 30, 2025
Strong Reactions
Madhab Pujapanda, a former member of the Shree Jagannath Temple Management Committee, expressed outrage over the product. He urged the temple administration to alert both the Odisha state government and the central government and also called for diplomatic intervention with Chinese authorities to put an end to the sale of such disrespectful items.
'This is not just an isolated case. There is a growing pattern where sacred Jagannath-related terminology like Mahaprasad and Patitapaban Bana are being misused for profit. Though steps have been initiated to legally protect these religious symbols and terms, the process needs to be accelerated," Pujapanda told Sambad.
Former MP and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Amar Patnaik also spoke out against the product.
'I vehemently condemn the egregious act of selling doormats with the sacred image of Lord Jagannath on AliExpress! This shameless profanity is an affront to the deepest sentiments of millions of devotees, trampling upon the revered iconography with utter disregard. It's a desecration of the highest order, and those responsible must be held accountable," Patnaik wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
'The fact that Lord Jagannath's image is being used as a mere commodity is a stark reminder of the blatant disrespect towards Hinduism. Immediate action is imperative to rectify this egregious wrongdoing and restore dignity to the revered deity," he added.

Online Outrage
Social media users have also voiced disapproval with many demanding immediate removal of the product.
One user commented, 'What is this Ali Express? You are selling doormats featuring Lord Jagannath, a deeply revered deity worshipped by Hindus across the world. Take it down immediately. This is a shameful act of disrespect by AliExpress."
Another wrote, 'We do not support or endorse the sale of such items and strongly urge sellers to consider the cultural and spiritual implications of their products. Respect for faith and tradition must always come before profit."
Several people pointed out that the act seemed intentional. 'People really don't have any common sense, I think this is done knowingly," someone said while a person added, 'Time and again these companies do such shameful act. They only do purposely to gain popularity by hurting Hindu's sentiments."
'Ali Express this is disrespect of 2 billion Hindus worldwide! Remove it immediately!" an individual stated.
Lord Jagannath is regarded as a form of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu. Known as the 'Lord of the Universe," he is worshipped along with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. The Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is a major centre of devotion and pilgrimage.
One of the most important festivals associated with the deity is the annual Ratha Yatra in Puri. During this grand celebration, the three siblings are taken out in decorated chariots and pulled through the streets by thousands of devotees.

Audit flags irregularities in Gurgaon civic body's accounts, rule violations

Gurgaon: Flagging financial irregularities worth Rs 9.1 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal year, a govt auditor in its report said that the corporation's accounts were "in a miserable condition" and in "need of improvement and closer supervision". The Haryana Local Audit department, said in the report released on Wednesday, that the corporation made advance payments of Rs 5.8 crore to other govt departments for development work. These advances, the report said, were often "drawn arbitrarily", even if they weren't required, reflecting a "sorry state of affairs". Another Rs 3.2 crore was spent by MCG for projects awarded on quotation by the contractors instead of following the mandatory bidding process. This, the auditor said, was a clear violation of norms. The report, accessed by TOI, is set to be tabled at the MCG House when it convenes on Aug 11 to form the civic body's finance and contracts committee (FCC). The state auditor raised questions about other practices by MCG. It pointed out that the contract for treating waste at Bandhwari landfill site was originally given to Ecogreen Envirotech. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Was The Dream Girl In The 1980s, Here She Is Now. Boite A Scoop Later, work at the landfill was sub-contracted to other firms and the cost was to be borne by Ecogreen. The auditor has sought a response from MCG and said that, if required, the corporation should recover from Ecogreen the amount spent on the sub-contracts. The report noted that MCG went beyond its financial limit of Rs 2.5 crore a year in operating two of its cow shelters. "No concrete action was taken on the last audit report (2022-23); cases of temporary advances were noticed; excess/irregular and avoidable expenditure were noticed; irregularities noticed in works accounts of the MC (municipal corporation); cases of non/short recoveries and losses were pointed out; defective maintenance of record/non-completion of record were noticed; miscellaneous observations…" the auditor said. MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya could not be reached for a comment till Thursday night. The corporation gets time to respond to the auditor's concerns, after which the govt takes a final call on measures to be taken. Kuldeep Yadav, elected as the councillor from ward 11 this March, told TOI that these irregularities took place when the MCG House was not constituted. "There was no check on payments made to contractors by MCG officials and staff. We will seek clarification from officials on the irregularities flagged in the audit report at the meeting on Aug 11," Yadav said. ED files charge sheet against min in SSC case

1 2 Kolkata: ED has filed a charge sheet against Bengal minister Chandranath Sinha as part of its probe into the SSC jobs-for-cash case. Sinha is the 55th accused in the case. The charge sheet was filed on Wednesday at the special PMLA court. It mentions that Sinha allegedly had a role in a nexus that involved taking money from school jobs aspirants, according to the ED. Following the filing of the charge sheet, Sinha rushed to the CGO Complex office of the agency on Thursday morning to meet officials. Sources close to Sinha said none of the officials met him. The central investigating agency had asked Sinha to appear before it last month. But Sinha evaded the appearance, citing his preoccupation with political matters. Sinha's name surfaced in the case after both Kuntal Ghosh and Tapas Mandal spoke about him. Ghosh and Mandal, two allegedly key persons in the nexus are said to have mentioned Sinha's name in their statements. Birbhum came under the radar of investigators after they unearthed an alleged network run by Trinamool MLA Jiban Krishna Saha. ED officials questioned a number of B Ed and DL Ed college representatives from Bolpur in connection to the case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Knee Pain Keeping You Up at Night? During the raid, agency officials also seized Rs 41 lakh from his residence. Sinha claimed that some amount of money is always kept at home. However, he could not justify the source of the whole sum of money. Two of his mobile phones were seized by officials. Later, when they summoned Sinha to the agency's CGO Complex office in Salt Lake, he failed to appear before them. He, instead, sent his lawyer. ED officials alleged they had found certain discrepancies in his statements and needed clarification. Sources close to Sinha said that he is looking at legal options after the agency filed the charge sheet. Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "A charge sheet is not gospel truth. ED charge sheets very often falter in courts. On the specific case, the minister and his legal advisors are in a better position to respond to what ED says." Pre-Onam heist: Coconut oil stolen, cash left untouched

KOCHI: In a throwback to the 2007 Malappuram gold heist, where burglars famously drilled through the floor of Kerala Gramin Bank to steal 80kg of gold, a thief in Aluva recently tried the same tactic - this time, to steal coconut oil. Though the digging attempt failed, he still managed to escape with 30 litres of oil. With cooking oil prices soaring ahead of Onam later this month, coconut oil is being treated almost like a luxury item & grocery stores have started locking it up like treasure. In recent weeks, the price of coconut oil in Kerala has nearly doubled from around Rs 260 to over Rs 500 a litre. When grocery store owner Ayoob Puthanpurayil arrived at his shop in Ernakulam on Sunday, he found it ransacked. Thirty one-litre bottles of virgin coconut oil, priced at Rs 600 each, were missing, along with a few packs of gingelly oil, apples, and milk. "There was Rs 5,000 in the register and even a charity box - both untouched," he said. "The real loss was oil. It was worth three times more." The thief had tried to dig in through the sand behind the shop - a floor-level break-in attempt reminiscent of the Malappuram heist - but was thwarted by a plywood sheet installed to block rats. He eventually broke in through a narrow back door, likely limiting how much he could carry. "He must have worked for hours in low light to get that far," Puthanpurayil said. The shop was locked on three sides, one out of view from the road. Evidence showed the thief lingered inside. Curd packets were opened and partly eaten; empty water bottles lay scattered. Puthanpurayil said it was the fourth such attempt in the area. Though he had CCTV footage, he didn't pursue a case as police kept citing procedures. Police said no formal complaint was filed.
