'Muhyiddin a victim,' Tun Faisal rejects MCMC classifying ex-PM as witness

Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz has accused the MACC of mischaracterising party president Muhyiddin Yassin's role in an ongoing investigation implicating him in a statement related to targeted RON95 subsidies.
Insisting that the Perikatan Nasional chairperson is the victim in the case, Tun Faisal rejected MCMC's classification of Muhyiddin as a 'witness' and instead pinned the blame on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

MACC strengthens ties with Sarawak Ombudsman for governance

KUCHING: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) reaffirmed its commitment to backing the Sarawak Ombudsman in improving governance and integrity. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated that collaboration, including officer secondment and knowledge-sharing, began before the Ombudsman's formation. 'Before the establishment of the Ombudsman, we had sent our officers to hold engagement sessions and for benchmarking in several countries,' he said. Azam added that MACC officers with integrity expertise are already assisting the Sarawak Ombudsman. He made these remarks after meeting the Sarawak Premier at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi. The Sarawak Ombudsman Bill 2023 was passed on Nov 20, 2023, allowing public complaints against maladministration in state agencies. The bill seeks to improve transparency, accountability, and public service efficiency. Azam highlighted the uniqueness of Sarawak's Ombudsman compared to other Malaysian states. 'Only Sarawak has its own Ombudsman, serving as a dedicated oversight body for governance,' he noted. - Bernama

MACC Continues Support, Cooperation With Sarawak Ombudsman

GENERAL KUCHING, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will continue to support the Sarawak Ombudsman in its efforts to enhance governance and integrity within the state administration. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said assistance and cooperation, including the sharing of expertise and the secondment of officers, had begun even before the Sarawak Ombudsman was established. 'Before the establishment of the Ombudsman, we had sent our officers to hold engagement sessions and for benchmarking in several countries (to study their Ombudsman models). 'Our officers with expertise in integrity have also been seconded to the Sarawak Ombudsman, and we will continue this collaborative effort,' he told reporters after paying a courtesy visit on Sarawak Premier at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here today. On Nov 20, 2023, the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly passed the Sarawak Ombudsman Bill 2023, enabling the public to report cases of maladministration involving state public service agencies. The bill aims to enhance transparency and accountability in government agencies while ensuring the presence of checks and balances and enabling improvements in public service delivery and procedures. Meanwhile, Azam said the establishment of the Sarawak Ombudsman was important as it provided a dedicated platform to monitor issues related to governance and administrative ethics. 'If we look at other states in Malaysia, they do not have their own Ombudsman; only Sarawak does. This Ombudsman is a good platform because it is a specific body that oversees matters related to governance in government administration,' he said. --BERNAMA

Zafrul: US tariff talks reflected responsible crisis management

KUALA LUMPUR: Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has denied former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's claim that the government appeared pleased with the outcome of negotiations on United States tariffs. He said the achievement was not a matter of "happiness", but of responsible crisis management to protect the interests of the nation and its people. He said the government had negotiated to avoid the 25 per cent US tariff that threatened more than RM198 billion in exports and 100,000 jobs in the Electrical and Electronics (E&E) sector alone. "We secured a 19 per cent rate, the same as other Asean partners, prioritising the nation's interests and economic stability. "This is not about being 'happy', Tun, but about taking responsibility to safeguard the livelihoods of Malaysians," he said in a post on his social media account. He was responding to Dr Mahathir's claim that the government seemed pleased with the deal negotiated with US President Donald Trump. On Dr Mahathir's allegation that Malaysia had removed all taxes on 11,000 US products entering Malaysia in exchange for a tariff reduction to 19 per cent from 25 per cent, Tengku Zafrul said the claim was false. He said that only 60.4 per cent of tariff lines were subject to zero duty, not 100 per cent. "There is a big difference between 100 per cent and 60 per cent, Tun. Sixty per cent is only slightly more than half, nowhere near the whole (100 per cent). So, Tun's allegation is false," he said. On Dr Mahathir's claim regarding rare earth supply, Tengku Zafrul said there was no agreement to supply rare earth exclusively. He added that there was also no statement suggesting that Malaysia would supply unprocessed raw rare earth. "The existing policy requires that rare earth be processed domestically before being exported. "Could Tun share the source of this allegation? It is not wrong to criticise, but when the criticism is based on false claims, that is wrong," he said.
