Spurs criticise online racist abuse aimed at forward Tel
Tottenham Hotspur said on Thursday that they are "disgusted" by the online racial abuse aimed at French forward Mathys Tel after their UEFA Super Cup loss against Paris Saint-Germain.
Europa League winners Spurs squandered a 2-0 lead as they lost to European champions PSG 4-3 on penalties in a dramatic Super Cup in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday.
Tel and Dutch defender Micky van de Ven had missed their spot-kicks for Spurs during the shootout.
"We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat," Spurs said in a statement.
"Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards - hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.
"We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you, Mathys."
Tel, 20, signed for Spurs on a permanent deal after a four-month loan spell at the Premier League club from German side Bayern Munich in June. REUTERS

Trump says he hopes to ‘save' Hong Kong democrat Jimmy Lai

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump on Aug 14 said he would see what he could do to help 'save' detained Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai, even though Chinese President Xi Jinping would not be 'thrilled'. "I'm going to do everything I can to save him," Mr Trump told Fox News Radio in an interview. "We'll see what we can do ... we're going to do everything we can." Lai, 77, has pleaded not guilty to charges under Hong Kong's national security law of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, as well as to a separate charge of conspiracy to publish seditious material. He has been held in solitary confinement for more than 1,500 days since December 2020. Mr Liu Pengyu, the spokesperson for China's embassy in Washington, said Lai had been 'a key orchestrator and participant in anti-China, destabilizing activities in Hong Kong'. "We strongly oppose external forces using judicial cases as a pretext to interfere in China's internal affairs or to smear and undermine Hong Kong's rule of law," he said. Mr Trump has said he would raise Lai's case as part of negotiations with China over trade and tariffs. On Aug 11, the US and China extended a tariff truce for another 90 days , staving off triple-digit duties on each other's goods. On Aug 12, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said trade officials from the two sides will meet again within the next two or three months to discuss the future of the economic relationship. REUTERS

The aim of the Aug 15 talks with Mr Putin is to set up a second meeting including Ukraine, Mr Trump said, adding: 'I don't know that we're going to get an immediate ceasefire.'
